Promoting conservation, sportsmanship and education in respect to walleye fishing. MARCH 2012 FM Walleyes Unlimited is proud to present “ANGLERS NIGHT” with Tom Neustrom I was born into a fishing family and basically started fishing when I was about three years old. I went with my Dad about every weekend to the Chain of Lakes located in Northern Illinois, and also would pedal my bike a short distance to Lake Michigan, in Chicago, and fish nearly daily in the summer. We went to our cabin in Northern Wisconsin several times during the year and began to hone my skills as an angler. I have been haunted by water all my life and started guiding in 1976 at Lake Geneva in Wisconsin. Upon moving to Minnesota in 1979, I began guiding there in 1980 and have ever since. I love to write and was asked to write a few articles for Fishing Facts Magazine and then for In-Fisherman and North American Fishing publications. This gave an additional opportunity to work with sponsors and develop a foundation for the future. To this date, I still contribute to all three of these publications as well as many others. I have been recognized as one of the top walleye guides in the country by In-Fisherman Magazine, North American Fisherman, Field and Stream, and Outdoor Life. I have hosted a radio show called “Guides Corner” for the past 18 years and it was nominated for the prestigious Minnesota Broadcaster’s Association Excellence of Craft on two occasions. I was inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in 2009 as a Legendary Guide which is a very humbling experience when you consider that only two guides are inducted each year throughout the entire country. I was recently elected Vice President of the National Professional Anglers Association Board of Directors and with my industry experience and passion for the sport, I hope to help this nationally respected organization to continued growth in the years to come. I represent several of the leading companies in the fishing industry including Costa Del Mar, Daiwa Reels and Rods, Mercury Marine, Lund Boat Co., Johnson Outdoors(MinnKota, Humminbird and Cannon, LakeMaster), Rapala, Suffix Line, Trigger X, Storm, Gemini Sport Products, Plano Molding, Frabill Co., Aquateko(Invisa-Swivel)and Strikemaster. These are all leaders in the fishing industry and I am proud to have my name associated with each and every company. During the late fall and winter I’m on the road doing seminars, in-store promotions and attending product meetings with several of the companies and rep groups. Fishing is a 12 month a year process for me and I love what I do. - Tom Neustrom Come join us Thursday March 26th at the Kelly Inn on Main Ave. Doors open at 6:00PM and the seminar starts at 7:00PM. President’s Comments... Wow, it’s been a crazy busy these last few months. First off, very special thanks to Gary Sauvageau and Barry Chouinard for many years of service on the Board of Directors. They have both given hundreds and possibly thousands of hours to our club. We all hope they don’t go far though, as their experience is priceless.

Second, I would like to welcome Tyler Wiser and Brenton Hell to the Board of Directors; both of these gentlemen are very passionate about the sport we love and will be GREAT additions to what is already an excellent group.

Lastly, being elected as the President of FM Walleyes Unlimited, a club that many people feel is the best in North America, is truly a humbling experience. If any of you have any questions, ideas, complaints, or just a comment, please feel free to contact me anytime by phone or e-mail. See you on the Ice,

This is the firstinstallment ofthe “Ask thePro” columnin the WalleyeLines newsletter. Each monthCorey Heiserand Troy Morris, both membersof FM Walleyes

UnlimitedwhocompeteontheMWCTrail, willansweryourquestionsto the best of their ability, sharing their knowledge, experience andexpertise. Troy and Corey have fished the FLW, PWT, and the MWC

trailsovertheyearsandareanxioustosharewhattheyhavelearned.

“We are very excited to being able to contribute to FM Walleyes and the Newsletter. Please send in all kinds of questions whether its’ about boat rigging, tackle storage, techniques or even how to pursue your dream of

becoming a professional in the fishing industry.”

To submit your questions for Corey & Troy go to the FM [email protected]

this Month’s questions Are:

What is your favorite body of water to fish during a tournament and while you are fishing for fun?

troy’s response-Growing up on the Missouri River system in Bismarck, fishing fast water current is by far the most fun and my favorite bodies of water to fish. The most popular options you have on these types of systems are vertical jigging, pitching jigs with live or artificial baits, trolling or casting crank baits and many more….. Also with so many places to fish on these types of systems you do not need to be crowded by boats and can fish your own spots by yourself at many times.

Corey’s response- That’s truly an ironic and awesome question, because for me it is two different places. I love to fish Devils Lake on my free time. It’s one of the few places in the world I can decide how I’m going to fish before I get there and typically put walleyes in the boat doing that such technique. For tournaments, I enjoy going to new places. Trying to figure out a new body of water in a weeks’ time is truly a challenge. Last year, I fished different techniques at every event. That’s the beauty of walleyes, they are different everywhere you go.

During the off-season, what do you do to prepare for the next year?

Corey’s response-There truly is no offseason. After the tournament season winds down, it’s time to get after the year end reports, put together proposals for new sponsors, and find out what is new from the current sponsors. Most companies are starting to put together their marketing plan for the following season. That means shows, shows, and a few more shows.

troy’s response- I will first figure out which events I am thinking about fishing next year, then shop the internet on reports for the past years fishing reports and most important are water levels for that particular body of water. Water levels are very important because it can dictate the presentation you might be using, when levels are high, fishing over trees and brush or shallow water back bays, or when levels are low and fishing main lake points and deep flats. Once I figure out where, have my lake maps purchased, studied lake maps and surfed the net on local hot spots, then figure out why they are holding fish that time of year and mark more spots on my map, then pull everything out of my boat and organize, organize and organize tackle boxes and rods.

Lee Ruhn has been a resident of SE ND since 1943 and has been an avid outdoorsman all his life. Lee was invited to fish on the Missouri with friends in 2007 and saw his friends struggling with their landing nets. His son in law was building a home in Roseau at the time and painting with a paint pole. He looked at Lee and said. You should put a net on this pole. It would make a great net. Lee likes challenges like this so a week later he approached his local machine shop and swapped some ideas how he might do so. It cost some risk capital and personal sweat but resulted in a very good product which others ask him to

make for them. As time went on, other ideas on how to improve his product kept coming his way. Four years into it he has over 800 customers and two very nice nets that have evolved into nets that are easy to use and extremely strong. The space saver series are most popular and available in 20 and 24 inch hoop sizes.
