For our members
Founded in 2003, LinkedIn connects the world’s professionals to
make them more productive and successful. With over 450
million members worldwide, including executives from every
Fortune 500 company, LinkedIn is the world’s largest
professional network.
LinkedIn’s vision is to create economic opportunity for every
member of the global workforce. To accomplish this, LinkedIn is
developing the world's first economic graph, a digital mapping of
the global economy. The graph includes every job opportunity in
the world (full-time and temporary); the skills required to obtain
those opportunities; the profiles for every company in the world
offering those opportunities; the professional profiles for every
one of the 3.3 billion people in the global workforce; and the
professional knowledge that exists within and between each of
these entities. LinkedIn can be the fabric connecting human
capital to where it can best be leveraged, and in doing so, help
lift and transform the global economy.

Member profiles make up a rich data set that LinkedIn
aggregates to understand a country’s labor market
Jobs Members indicate their job history in the experience
section of their profile. When a new position is added with
a different location or employer, LinkedIn uses these
signals to uncover trends. Information is always
summarized to protect individual member privacy.
Education Members indicate their academic achievements in the
education section of their profile, such as their higher
education organization and degree type.
Skills Members indicate their expertise within the skills section
of their profile. LinkedIn clusters the tens of thousands of
individual skills that members choose to display on their
profile into categories for analysis.

How does the Economic Graph help people find jobs?
Academic research supports social job search
9
• “Why the Referential Treatment? Evidence from Field Experiments on Referrals. “
• Research performed in 2016 by Harvard University, NBER, Coursera
• Key Quote: “The use of social connections is ubiquitous in the labor market. More than half of
jobs are found through informal connections and firms are more likely to hire referred than
non-referred applicants, all else equal.”
• Do Informal Referrals Lead to Better Matches? Evidence from a Firm's Employee Referral System.
• Research performed in 2014 by MIT, Federal Reserve Bank of New York
• Found that while referrals only made up about 6% of total applications, they resulted in more
than 25% of hires.
• Key Quote: “We find that referred candidates are more likely to be hired; experience an initial
wage advantage which dissipates over time; and have longer tenure in the firm… The
observed referral effects appear to be stronger at lower skill levels.”
• The Value of Hiring Through Employee Referrals
• Research performed in 2016 by University of Minnesota, University of California – Berkeley,
University of Toronto, Cornerstone
• Research Found: Compared to nonreferred applicants, referred applicants are more likely to
be hired, less likely to quit, have lower accident rates, and yield substantially higher profits per
worker than nonreferred workers.
Being referred to a job is a more effective way of securing employment compared to applying to a traditional job board.
