On four occasions Packer has commissioned Cardiff- based Bluewater Cruising Yachts to work on different high-speed tenders – one was a jet-powered RIB (rigid- hulled inflatable), another was a fancy 28-foot sportsboat of the Boston Whaler ilk. It’s a feather in the cap for owner David Bradburn and his build team, who otherwise tend to fly under the radar in the barren back-blocks of Munibung Road. It’s a good advertisement, too, for their versatility. The company is remarkably prolific. Among the custom projects currently on the go are a new six-cabin houseboat, a full refurb of a 20-year-old Wayworld 45 yacht, and new caravan moulds. Over the years, Bluewater has also built 14-odd Seawind 1050 Resort and Venturer catamarans for Nowra-based Seawind. The primary mission, however, is to construct specialised cruising yachts for a discerning, globe- trotting audience. They have four models on offer – the 420RS, 420CC, 450M and 520PH. Three 420s are under construction. Two are raised- saloon versions of the Adams- designed 42-foot hull, the other is a centre-cockpit. The 45-footer is a classic Holland/Cole design, one of which regularly competes in the Sydney-Hobart race, and the 52-foot pilot-house sloop was formerly the Farr 51 built by Binks Yachts in Adelaide. Bradburn has bought or built the moulds over time. And time is something that the Bluewater boys seem to have up their sleeves. Enter the factory and there’s a sense of purpose rather than pace. They don’t rush their work but rather strive to get it right. Everything is done on site. The build cycle for a 420 is around 12 months, whereas a mass-production builder could do a similar-sized yacht in about 12 days. Customers are prepared to wait, knowing that the vessel will protect them in a storm and also last them for many a year. Most buyers immerse themselves in the process by regularly visiting the factory and, come launch day, they already know their boat inside-out. There’s a price to pay, at least compared to the imports, but the testimonial page on the Bluewater website speaks volumes for the quality of both boat and customer satisfaction.
