I’m really excited to have you on the call today. Can you tell us about your background, and about how you became a hypnotherapist?

Yes, I don’t like to call myself a hypnotherapist because I am so much, much, much more than that. I have a background in Psychology, I’m a trained nutritionist and I also trained as an exercise instructor. What I do is beyond hypnosis. I trained to be a child psychologist and found that this wasn’t quite for me, and ended up working for Jane Fonda in LA, teaching exercise classes, which was much more for me. I discovered many of the women in her classes, and several men too, had some kind of eating disorder: Anorexia, bulimia, body dysmorphia, exercise compulsion, they were all obsessed with trying to be thin.

Because of my psychology background, I was really fascinated by how their minds worked; because these were the elite people in Hollywood – the top film producers, top actresses, and they obsessed about the fact that they ate a cookie. So I found myself going to hypnosis school and training

as a hypnotherapist and psychotherapist because it was such an immediate way of finding out why people acquired these issues and curing them.

I trained there for three years and loved it. I was very lucky because the whole time I was training I was still working for Jane and also working in another Hollywood gym called Matrix. That meant my patients’ came straight out of my classes and out of the gym. After I finished studying hypnotherapy I went on to study nutrition, so I have a great background because I understand exercise psychology, the psychology of disturbed eating and nutrition too. When I combined these three things it made my practice, I think, superior to other peoples.

You will find a lot of naturally thin people saying “Just don’t eat”, but that’s like telling an insomniac “Just get into bed and you will fall asleep”. A lot of nutritionists give appalling diet advice and a

lot of trainers, who of course are training all the time, tell their overweight clients to eat a high carb diet for the energy to train, and that’s actually the worst thing you can do. Because I had such a complete background in the root of overeating, eating addictions and constant dieting I wrote a best selling book in 2008 (that is reprinted several times every year), and now I have devised this program because my passion is to help people cure

overeating. I should add that when I was living in Hollywood I had an eating problem too. My flatmate was bulimic, my best friend was anorexic, everyone who worked for Jane was superslim and we all existed on this LA diet of diet yogurt, diet coke, diet hot chocolate and oatmeal. It was just the most insane world that I was living in every day where you become consumed by food – you wake up and think “I should not have eaten that yesterday, today I won’t eat anything bad”, it’s such a vicious circle and once I cured myself, I decided to cure as many other people as I could because it is such a relief to just be normal about food and be a normal weight.

that’s excellent, really fascinating. so how does hypnosis work, and how can it help people lose weight?

The way hypnosis works is threefold. First of all, no one is born overeating. In the womb, we are surrounded by nourishment 24 hours a day. Babies take food whenever they need it and because food is always there babies are born with a belief that says ‘food is always available’ and because of that if a baby does not want to eat you can’t make them eat. When they have had enough they stop they know more food will be there later.

Babies have no problem refusing food, it isn’t just newborns, who simply will not overeat, most two year olds who request ice cream, take a few bites, then decide they don’t want any more, because their mind says very clearly ‘food is always there’. Naturally slim people can have half a bar of chocolate in their bag or in or desk drawer because they too have the exact same belief ‘food is always available I don’t want any more right now ‘It is this same thought process that allows some people to order steak and fries then leave half the fries.

We are all born with the belief that food is there all the time, but once you get into the diet mentality, which says ‘Cookies, desserts and candy are bad naughty food that I cannot have and must not eat’. What happens is that we want it more.

healthy or they simply cannot afford things like that, you form a new belief, which is: ‘Oh, I really want those foods but I can’t have them they are not allowed.’ And of course, when you can’t have something, you want it more and more and more, and that is the psychology of everything we want. We particularly want what we can’t have, what is forbidden or not available and diets don’t deal with that. A diet says ‘If you want to lose weight instead of having dessert, have an apple. But you think “I don’t want an apple, I want a dessert”. Then you end up eating the dessert, just because you were told you can’t have them. Hypnosis works by taking you back to show you how, when and why you formed a distorted relationship with food and it then cures it completely and permanently by rewiring your thoughts about food and changing your relationship with food forever.

Your mind does what it thinks you want it to do. When you have parents who say, “You have been so good, let’s have a treat,” or “Oh you had a bad day, let’s make things better with ice cream,” you are reinforcing and rewiring your mind to believe that food makes everything better, particularly junk food. When we hear that over and over again for 15 years it forms an imprint in our minds.

I have never yet met a client who says, “When I’m depressed I grill some fish and shred some spinach and then I feel better.” However, I have met thousands of clients who say, “When I’m depressed I eat cookies, potato chips and chocolate biscuits,” because your mind wants to go back to those early memories when food made everything better.

Of course, when you are four and your best friend doesn’t like you anymore and your Mom gives you a cookie, it does make everything better, but when you are forty four there are no amount of cookies in the world that could make that better. So it’s really training your mind to recognize that all the beliefs that we have about food are out-dated and then the mind will let them go.

It’s really very simple; every habit of action is run by a habit of thought. If you think, “I’ve had a really bad day so I’m going to eat a whole tub of Ben and Jerry’s and that will cheer me up,” that is an action that is run by a

thought process. If you try to take away the action of consoling yourself with junk food but don’t take away the thought process (the belief) that led to that action, then almost all people will resume bad eating habits. What my hypnosis in this program does so well, is that it identifies the habit of thought that runs the habit of action, and then it removes the habit of thought and thus the habit of action is also gone.

For instance if you went to an abattoir and came out thinking “I can never eat meat again,” you have changed your habit of thinking without planning to. Thereafter, you never have to resist eating meat it just happens all the time. If you eat something that makes you violently sick, like shellfish, you often find that you can never ever eat that again because the minute you change your

habit of thinking you change your habit of action for good.

As you are over the sink bringing up the fish you think “I’m never going to eat shellfish again,” your mind locks onto that and you never eat it again – but it’s not work. This happens effortlessly because you change the thinking not the action. All diets try to change the action but they don’t even touch the thinking, and that is why 98% of diets fail, which is a staggering amount but absolutely correct.

that leads us to the next question, that is: why don’t diets and diet pills work?

Well, diets try to suppress your appetite, but whatever you suppress will eventually motivate you. I work with so many people who have been on a shake diet, where they will have three shakes a day. They can lose a lot of weight but when that diet ends they will put it all back on again. If you look at the statistics for things like The Cambridge Diet and Lighter Life, they do help you lose weight, but they have a very low success rate for helping you keep that weight off forever.

Any diet (including diet pills), will make you restrict what you eat, but I have worked on many weight loss shows, including Celebrity Fit Club and Supersize Superskinny and unless people lose weight by changing their

mindset what happens is that when the last weigh-in happens and the cameras stop rolling, people think “I’m going to have a pizza to celebrate!”and thus they gain back the bad eating habits and the lost weight (this happens on all weight loss shows including the show The Biggest Loser).

I remember working with a client on a weight loss show who did just that. They had a trainer, a nutritionist, they had a weigh in every week, and because this was in the public eye they lost a lot of weight but as soon as the cameras stopped rolling they ordered donuts and ice cream, because their belief was “Well, I can reward myself now”. Many people who go on a diet reward their weight loss with sugar and it’s such a shame, because they are constantly trying to resist foods that they think make them happy, yet they celebrate with those same foods.

When I went to the Olympics in London, there were three sponsors: Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Cadbury! What kind of message is that? The athletes don’t even eat that food but the people in the audience are being told that Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Cadbury are the best thing for you. From the minute you get up until you go to bed you are invited to eat junk food at least four hundred times a day. You are brainwashed in a way. You get up and look at your computer, the TV, you hear the radio, you drive to work and there are no adverts saying “How about a yummy pear?” or “These peaches look great”. They are all adverts for chocolate, crisps, sugary cereals and fast food.

We are brainwashed to want that food incredibly effectively. Now of course food companies are even cleverer – the worse a food is, the more they give it a name like ‘Sunny Delight,’ ‘Divine’, ‘Celebrations’ or ‘Heroes’. We know Cadbury call their small chocolate bars ‘Fun Size’ and McDonald’s have a ‘Happy Meal.’ So people are manipulated to believe and think that those foods makes them happy. Yet, if your body could speak it would say “Believe me, this does not make me happy, ever.”

What hypnosis does is stop that. It rewires the brain differently, but it’s certainly not dangerous. It makes you either become indifferent to junk food completely or makes you only want to have it occasionally and stop eating it easily. It makes you realize that your body would never say “I want to be

filled up with fat, chemicals, colorants, pesticides and preservatives”. Your body hates that food, so much so that the more junk food you eat, the more you make internal fat to wrap it in, because it’s so toxic!

It’s only your mind that thinks you want it. Your body would never wake up craving doughnuts, but if your mind craves it this can make you feel as if your body really, really wants it and even needs it. The cure is to get your mind to stop wanting it and then you become absolutely indifferent to it permanently, which is a wonderful and liberating feeling.

we witnessed your amazing transformation of people on the famous show ‘super size, super skinny’ and I understand that this is a method used in the ‘Perfect weight forever’ program, so can you explain how this method works?

The ‘Perfect Weight Forever’ program is really like having a session with me. I’ve spent a lot of time working out how I can give people the equivalent of a session with me via a recording, because of course I can’t see all the people who want to work with me. So what ‘Perfect Weight Forever’ does is it looks at how, where, when and why you got such bad eating habits. It then asks, ‘what you want’, because of course I have to tailor each program to the individual.

Some people say “I don’t want to eat big meals or large portions ever again,” but other people say “I want to eat everything, but I want to be able to stop and leave food” – this is something people find very, very difficult. Other people say “I just want to give up sugar or cheese or junk food”. So it will take you through a system, asking you what it is you want, where you got these bad habits from, how long they have been going on and what happens when you try to stop them, then it very much tailors the cure to you. It is very different because it offers you a cure and allows you to be ‘normal’ about food.

I was on a plane recently and the stewardess tried to give me some chocolate bars. I said “No, thanks, I don’t eat those”. She said “Oh my

gosh, how do you resist them? I wish I could resist them”. I simply said “I tell my mind enough times that I don’t want them, and then I don’t want them”. That doesn’t mean I never ever eat chocolate, of course I do, but at one time I could never even keep it in my house. One year, I spent ages hanging chocolate decorations on the Christmas tree and the next day I ate them all , even though they were my daughters. Another time when my daughter had Easter eggs, and I ate all of them, then rushed out to replace them only to discover I could not as they were no longer in stock! My poor daughter was so upset and I was so ashamed of my inability to control myself around chocolate.

Now I’ve gone from that, to being so indifferent to chocolate that I could keep it for years. My husband recently asked me why our freezer is so full up with chocolate, and I said “People keep giving it to me, companies keep sending me, ‘healthier chocolate’, and I know I’m never going to eat it but I don’t want to throw it away. So I just put it in the freezer so I can give it to guests. One of our freezer drawers is full of chocolate but a few years ago I could never ever, ever have done that.

So it’s a lovely thing to now have that indifference, because the opposite of love is not hate, the opposite of love is indifference and disinterest. For anyone who has had a tortured relationship with food, the ability to be disinterested in pizza, pretzels and cake is liberating. I know what a difference it made to me, which is why I’m passionate about making that difference with other people too.

For instance, a lot of my clients will say, “I couldn’t leave cookies or sandwiches because they were free and because it’s free I had to eat it”, but that’s a mind thing. It’s not free - if you eat food your body doesn’t want and it turns it into fat, then you will spend a fortune on gym memberships and diet pills that’s actually cost you a lot of money. You have to bypass this mentality. A lot of clients will tell me

that, they don’t want to tell the waiter in a restaurant, “Bring me that without the sauce,” because they don’t want to draw attention to themselves, but you know, J-Lo or David Beckham would never have any problem with doing that. You have to have a sense of yourself that is confident enough to ask, “Can I have that differently?”

I was on a plane last week and I was in a rush to see a client, so I hadn’t eaten. They were giving out sandwiches, and I took one, but I didn’t eat the bread I only ate the filling, which was some fish and salad. If my fellow passengers see that as bizarre, I don’t mind. It doesn’t matter to me. If I was a vegetarian I would have picked out the fish and eaten the bread and salad, but you do need to have a certain confidence to do that. That’s why I love this program - it doesn’t just give you weight loss, it gives you the confidence to eat in a way that works for you, for the rest of your life. amazing, so what are the actual tools, techniques and content of the Perfect weight forever program?

I try to keep the content very simple because I’ve looked at some other programs and there’s just so much, you think “Oh wow, I don’t even know where to start here.” So perfect weight forever is very simple, very fast, and you don’t have to read pages and pages of stuff...you just start.

You start with me explaining why we overeat, what is going on, and how we are going to end that habit, then very quickly we go into what is going on with you. I like to call it ‘What’s eating you!’ because you shouldn’t be consumed by food. What’s going on, when did this happen? As the questions come up, you get answers to those questions. And the answers free you completely to be absolutely normal about food.

Of course, there’s diet advice, recipes, keep fit, Q & A and interactions, but it’s very fast and very straightforward. It asks you ‘what is going on?’ and it shows you how to stop that forever, and it is actually incredibly simple...because simple is better.

People just haven’t got hours and hours and hours to read manuals and follow workouts, or to buy loads of ingredients and make special food. I don’t agree with any of that because we all live in worlds where we are so busy

that the minute something seems like work, we just don’t want to do it. The unique selling point of my approach is really little, tiny things you can do that take literally five minutes to do, but that can change your relationship with food forever. This is really what I’m known for – changing people immediately but with techniques that are simple. A lot of people who meet me and review my books say this should be taught in schools. I agree it should be, and one day it will be, because it frees people.

I understand this is an audio program, so is this something people can listen to whilst on their way to work or while working out at the gym? How would people use this program?

The beauty of the ‘audio book’ is that you can listen to it anywhere, at any time. You can listen to on the commute to work, you can listen to it while in the gym, while in the bath or even while doing chores. Anytime at all, even if you are getting your hair or nails done. The ‘hypnosis tracks’ should be listened to in a safe and relaxing place where you will not be disturbed. It takes just minutes, and we all have a few minutes.

are there any hypnosis sessions included?

Yes, there are a series of hypnosis tracks to listen to, you can take your pick, because weight loss is not a ‘One size fits all’. That’s why I disagree with so many other weight loss audios, they assume everyone is the same. You can mix and match them, and change them around. fantastic. Most diets take significantly longer, so there is obviously a massive benefit there. Now there are obviously going to be a few people still skeptical about hypnosis...some people believe there is a misconception about it being harmful and a type of mind control. Is there any way possible that any harm could happen during this process?

Hypnosis has been around for many years, it’s even in the Bible. But there are no incidents ever of anyone being harmed. Hypnosis has been widely practiced in the public eye since the 1950’s and 65 years ago The Stanford Brain Institute started to record and document how very powerful hypnosis was and how it could benefit people. In all that time there are no recorded incidents of hypnosis being harmful. Hypnosis can’t make you do what the hypnotist wants you to do, it can only make you do what you want to do.

Think about it this way, if hypnosis could make you do what the hypnotist wants, many hypnotist would be a millionaires, because while you were under hypnosis they could say “When you pay, you are so delighted, that you give me an extra thousand dollars”, or “Put me in your will,” or “Buy me a Porsche”. I have lots of clients who send me little gifts but no one has ever sent me a Ferrari because I haven’t been able to suggest that anybody would. I wouldn’t even try that because in hypnosis, you can only ever tell people what they want to hear.

You can never tell people what they don’t want to hear. When you tell them what they want to hear, it excites and delights their imagination, and it makes it work. But if you tell them what they don’t want to hear, they shut down. There are no recorded incidents anywhere in the world about hypnosis being harmful. There is no one in the world who has left their home or their estate to their hypnotist. Hypnosis can only benefit people.

When you see a stage hypnotist making people think that they are an animal, what you have to understand is one in ten people are incredibly suggestible.

So one in ten of us, 10%, are very, very suggestible. And that 10% is the type of person who will have a drink and then lose their inhibitions, because they like behaving like that. That 10% are already fairly uninhibited, that’s the wild and crazy friend that we have who will exhibit wild behaviour at a party, but they already exist, and when you go to a stage show, it is that 10% who volunteer. If you ever look at a stage hypnotist, when they ask for volunteers, you will notice that they send some volunteers back because they only want that one in ten. That one in ten want an excuse to be someone else. They usually want to be an actor, performer or singer. They want to be the star of the show, and they know exactly what they are doing in a stage show. They know they are pretending to fall in love with a fire hydrant and it’s all very entertaining – and they remember it all too, but clinical hypnosis is very different to stage hypnosis.

You aren’t going to cluck like a chicken or bark like a dog, because you are using the suggestibility factor only to help you. I’ve been practicing hypnosis for thirty years, and I have practice insurance, but I have never had to use it because if you could sue a hypnotist you would have to be able to sue a priest and prove that talking to people and giving them advice is harmful.

When I trained in LA, my hypnosis teacher, who is a genius, offered free legal insurance with all the training. He offered to defend you and pay all your bills if anyone ever tried to sue you, because he knew with absolute conviction

that you can’t do any harm.. The only successful litigation was when Terry Wogan had to pay (the hypnotist) Paul McKenna for suggesting hypnosis was harmful, and that the people on his show were fake.

Actually, that litigation worked because Mckenna was able to prove that it’s not harmful at all, it’s incredibly beneficial. You can’t make the mind do what it doesn’t want to do, but you can excite it into really doing what you want it to do. So if you wanted to be a public speaker, I could make you love public speaking, make you find it exciting and engrossing, and make you really good at it, I couldn’t hypnotize someone to be a brain surgeon or perform surgery, it simply isn’t possible, but I

can hypnotize somebody to reawaken something that’s already in them. If somebody was uneducated and couldn’t write, I couldn’t hypnotize them to write a book, but I’ve hypnotized many journalists to write a book because they already have that ability within them. I couldn’t hypnotize you to speak Egyptian, but I could hypnotize you to learn Egyptian really fast...but I couldn’t say, ‘when you wake up, you are fluent in Arabic’ – that just isn’t possible.

Can you give us your best case study using this method?

Gosh I have so many case studies! I got a lovely letter from someone that said “I was literally dying from obesity, when I came across your program. I have now lost 100 lbs, just from doing what you said. Now I feel so different!” I got another lovely letter from a lawyer who said “Ever since I had two children I’ve been 70lbs overweight and I simply could not lose weight. I got your program and after two days my husband and I booked a holiday – We hadn’t had a holiday for five years because I didn’t want to go on the beach. I hadn’t even begun but I just knew that it would work, and I lost 14lbs in ten days.” Of course, you are not going to maintain 14lbs in ten days but a month later she lost another 14 lbs, and altogether she lost 50 lbs. This was six years ago, and it has never ever come back on again.

So many of my customers are just lovely. One lady said she is sure she will get banned from posting on Weight Watchers forums and telling everyone about my program! She lost 120 lbs on my program. My greatest success was a customer who lost a total of 400 lbs. He had weighed 800lbs. Phenomenal! My clients get so passionate about what I do that if I get any criticism, my customers always jump in and defend me- but I never ask them to!

The funniest thing that has happened was when I was giving a talk somewhere. One person said, “You must have an incredible PR, because you have these amazing reviews, hundreds and hundreds of them. knows. Because the weight is so visible, we judge overweight people as weak – they are not weak, they have been conditioned, very badly. It’s a great thing to replace that bad conditioning with good conditioning that sets you free.

that’s excellent. How is Perfect weight forever different from your other products out there, like your books?

Perfect Weight Forever is very different because my other products don’t allow people to have a session with me, but with new technology, you really can have something almost as good. For a long time I thought people had to see me personally to have a session with me. People have flown to see me from as far away as the Falklands and New Zealand, and some clients fly me out to see them. I went to Milan last week, and I’m going to Paris on Thursday. I’m flown all over the world to have sessions with clients, but I’ve always wanted to make myself more available to everyone.

With new technology, I have realized that I can interact with clients through their computer screens, and that’s why this is different to any books or products that I have released before – you are almost having a one-on-one session with me. That was not possible before, and now it is.

food, or even punishing yourself by not having food. But this will work for you because we are not focusing on the action - we are focusing on what is running the action – and we are curing that. So diet pills, rigid diet plans, they don’t work. Gyms are fine, but often they are just making people workout to burn off all the calories of the junk that they have eaten. But my program will work for you by changing your actions, and your whole belief system.

First you make your beliefs, and then your beliefs make you. Even in the Bible it says ‘Man is what he believes’, so if you believe that chocolate cures all your problems, you aren’t going to be very successful at giving up chocolate for very long! But once you change that belief system on a deep, unconscious and subconscious level, you really are free. So much so that you will be able to have it in the house, serve it to your children, and sit with other people who are eating it utterly uninterested it.

That’s the other thing with restrictive diets – when someone says ‘come for dinner’, you think, “Oh, but what if they cook pasta or pizza?”. I used to not go to places because of the food. I look back now and think, what kind of insanity was that? I would refuse to go to, for example, my partner’s family reunion because I knew it would be a picnic with cake, chips and sandwiches, and I would not be able to resist it. Now I look back and think, ‘What a waste’. Now I can go anywhere because food does not control me.

It was my mother’s birthday yesterday – I took her a cake and all kinds of sweet things, but I had no interest in eating it. That’s the kind of freedom you need. You need to be able to go out with your friends when they go for beers, fries, pizza, or cake. You can’t live a life always fighting to resist that food. When I go out for pizza I just eat the toppings, or eat a bit of one then leave it. I have stuff in the house all the time that I would never eat, because when my daughters’ friends come over, they don’t want to eat lentils and salad. They want to eat what every other kid eats.

When my elderly father comes to stay I buy him all the little things that he loves, and when he leaves I give it to him to take with him, because otherwise it won’t get eaten. But diets don’t offer you that. They offer you “eat apples, eat salad,” but people don’t want to eat that when their friends go for lasagna. They don’t want to feel different, they want to feel normal. It’s also very hard as a parent because you don’t want to bring your children up to

have hang ups about food – for example many parents can not have potato chips in the house – then the children grow up with the same cycle – they think that’s naughty food, that’s bad food and I want it.

I have a lot of clients who say they can eat sensibly until about 4pm, then they start craving confectionery, or candy or cereal, and that’s because when they came in from school, that’s exactly what their mother gave them. So we can see how these patterns arise, because food has memories both good and bad...dessert is always a treat. As a parent it’s very important to have a normal relationship with food, so your children pick that up. You can go to any event and find something to eat that works for you, while being indifferent to all the other stuff.

great. so how long will it take before you start to see results with Perfect weight forever?

It’s very different – there are three ways you see the results. You either change immediately, or you change progressively or retroactively. A lot of my clients say “I left your office and I was a different person”, or “I read your book, did your program and changed right there and then”. So you can change immediately. Recently a client said to me, “I was listening to your program in the car and I stopped, went into the garage to get some chocolate and I came out with a bottle of water, and I thought ‘Ooh, what happened there?’”. It’s working all the time. People will say “I went to buy junk food and I just couldn’t eat it. I went to buy salami and came out with some apples, and didn’t quite understand what was happening”. days your mind will like the tea without sugar. If you then reintroduce it later it will taste actually rather sickly.

It does not take your mind very long to give up an old belief and replace it with a new one. With the Perfect Weight Forever program, you are giving up very destructive, harmful beliefs and replacing them with positive ones. More than that, what you are actually doing is re-activating, re-manifesting and regenerating the perfect attitude to food that you were born with. You are not asking your brain to come up with anything new, it’s actually going back to how you were meant to be.
