At Arco we believe in keeping all our customers aware of industry trends, legislations, stockquality and product updates. Within the safety glove market right now the important newssurrounds the stock and supply of leather for gloves... and the knock on effect it may have intheir manufacturing.

We realise that as a leather glove purchaser this may cause you to worry about supply andconsider your options. So we would like to take this opportunity to expand on the full range weoffer and show you all the alternatives to leather available right now.

These gloves are usually used for general and mechanical applications. Mechanical hazards areassociated with the handling of rough or sharp objects which could abrade, cut or pierce the skin. There are a host of alternative products using different materials which will perform as well as or betterthan leather rigger gloves.

Gloves should be selected based on the application of the user and the environment they are working in.If you require help with the selection process, please contact your local branch.

What are the issues in the leather market?

• Reduced Number of Ethical Factories

Arco only use ethical factories, but manufacturers who are not as ethically aware may have been usingfactories which are non compliant. Environmental restrictions, upgrades in REACH requirements and are-write of the PPE directive are all putting greater pressure on the lower standard glove factories, which has resulted in closures. This means that there will be increased pressure on the factories wesource from as more manufacturers will want to use them.

Arco will continue to maintain a position of high integrity. We always source ethically, we do not pollutethe environment and we do not sell non-compliant products.

• Reduced Supply

Stricter legislation has had an effect on the number of ethical factories available for glove production. Thereduced amount of factories will be under strain to cope with the increase in demand for glove production.

Also, over recent years the leather market has changed, our glove manufacturers are reporting thatthe demand for leather is far outstripping supply. Manufacturers simply don’t have access to the hidesthey used to.

Customers need to be aware that industrial leather gloves which are poor quality, inconsistently madeand in many instances non-compliant may begin to enter the market. When buying gloves from Arcoyou can be sure of the quality of the gloves you are buying.

• The solution

Leather gloves have been superseded by newer and more sophisticated technologies. Years agoleather was a leading material for the manufacture of industrial gloves but now there are a multitude ofliner/coating combinations that perform better than leather in many industrial applications.

• Leather is the only suitable material for industrial gloves isn’t it?

Leather gloves are best suited to general handling tasks but newer and more sophisticated technologies have beencreated to assist with more intricate handling tasks. Selecting the correct glove for your application can actually maketasks easier.

• We have used leather gloves in this business for many years. Why change?

A leather glove is made from many parts which are cut from hides, shaped and then manually sewn together to form aglove. The end product naturally contains many seams. Arco invests a great deal of resource to ensure that our range of leather gloves are of high quality, but newer technology fabrics offer improved levels of comfort, dexterity, sensitivity, grip and tactility. For example knitted/coated gloves are often lightweight, seamless, breathable and keep the hand cool.Leather does not.

• Leather must be the highest quality material for working gloves, look at all of the stylish, well designed fashion gloves available.

Gloves are frequently made from off cuts and scraps of the overall leather hide. This process naturally results ininconsistencies. In addition, leather from several hides can go into the making of one pair of gloves. It has always beendifficult to ensure a perfect consistency across batches of leather. Synthetic products are consistent, every glove is thesame and every glove will perform as well as the next. It would not be true to say this of industrial leather gloves.

• Leather is the most dexterous, flexible material for gloves.

Leather, whilst very robust, is not particularly dexterous. Ergonomic sizing is difficult in a product made via a sewing process.Grip, a very important requirement in a glove, can be variable in leather products. When leather gets wet it stiffens and oftensmells. There are more appropriate materials to use when fine handling or component manipulation is a requirement.

• What are the cost implications?

In many instances synthetic materials will be less expensive, more consistent and provide cost in use benefits. If the correctgloves are specified then customers frequently report lower consumption, a happier, healthier workforce and improved output. In many applications the newer technologies remove the handling restrictions that are a natural result of leather products.

• What is the latest supply position?

The market has changed. Manufacturers report a demand for leather that is far outstripping supply. They can’t get thevolume of hides they once could (this a tanning issue). At the same time the market is being squeezed by legislativechanges. Environmental restrictions, upgrades in REACH requirements and a re-write of the PPE directive are all puttinggreat pressure on manufacturers. The scarcity of supply and the increased legislative requirements have combined toimpact supply in several ways. The market is seeing industrial leather gloves which are of poor quality, high inconsistencyand in many instances non-compliant. Arco will continue to maintain a position of high integrity. We always sourceethically, we do not pollute the environment and we do not sell non-compliant products.
