Periodic Observations

Coaching providers must have a safeguarding and child protection policy in place,

including procedures for dealing with safeguarding incidents which are communicated to

and understood by all staff members

You must:

• understand best practice for creating a safe environment for children in your care

• give parents and carers confidence that their child is in a safe activity or learning environment

Safeguarding, and promoting the welfare of children, is everyone's responsibility.

2. Safe practice -

including ear-rings

What is your school’s

stance on ear-rings in PE &

School Sport?

Cambridgeshire Advice (This must be adhered to in maintained schools)

All personal effects should be removed

If they cannot be removed, staff need to take action to try to make situation safe.

It is not recommended that tape is put over ear-rings

If safety is likely to be compromised, the individual pupil(s) concerned should not actively participate

in activities where risk is raised. This includes activities run by coaches and third parties if the school

organised the activity

What do we mean by low and high risk?

Low risk is where children can work and be secure in their own personal space

This could be warming up, skills practices, observing and analysing, officiating, coaching.

Higher risk is where that personal space could be compromised … this could be by other participants or by equipment

This could be games activities where there are elements of ‘scrimmage’, gymnastics where children are close to each other or where the floor / equipment could come close to the ears, swimming, dodgeball ..etc.

Thinking back to the changes you made when you had children back on site after lockdown

What have you kept? What’s didn’t work?

Key principles for supporting safe PE, School Sport and Physical Activity:

• Clean frequently touched surfaces

• Wash hands frequently as part of a clear hygiene regime

• Minimise contact

• Ensure good respiratory hygiene

18

In order to ‘take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of

others who may be affected by what they do at work’, we must …
