The Sky is Falling

We all remember the story about Chicken Little and the infamous acorn on the head

that became a piece of the sky and quickly turned into a disastrous outlook on life. How many of us are guilty of the same ‘falling sky’ mentality? How many of us are too ensconced in all the negative talk about the economy, the environment and the selling out of America by our elected politicians to have a positive outlook on our lives (both personal and business)? I have always believed that you make your own economy, you chart your own course and you set

your own sails. One of my mentors, Jim Rohn said it best when he admonished us ‘not to wish that it were easier, but to wish that we were better’. So many of us are compla ining about the state of the economy in our own county without really understanding that it is what

we have made it by our own choices. It doesn’t have to be that way. When we are all trying our best to make a living here locally we should be helping the other guy make a living locally also. Are you talking, buying and supporting ‘local’? Do you spend most of your hard earned money with local merchants? With a county known as ‘Wise’ we should all be doing the Wise thing and supporting our local merchants and business owners. How do we do that? It’s easy. Before you decide to spend any money ask yourself this question, “will the money I am about to spend stay in the community that I call home”? If your answer is yes then be proud to support a local business. If your answer is no, then please won’t you try and find a local merchant who has the similar product or service and do business with them? All of us are in this together. For each dollar spent with a local independent merchant, 68 cents returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national chain, only 43 cents stays here and if you spend it online or outside of your area NOTHING comes home. Why not support your friends and neighbors and invest back into the community? Is the sky falling? The choice is yours. ■

Small businesses have an incredible opportunity with social media, yet many are still not taking

advantage of it. Some of the things I hear from small business owners about social media are: they’re unsure what it is and how to use it, they don’t understand why they need it, and it’s overwhelming. All understandable, but today’s business world has changed and social media is a BIG part of that change. If you own a business, it is no longer an option to be involved with social media. Here are just a few reasons why:

Consumers have embraced social media and are • using it to fi nd products and services, and asking for recommendations from their social media friends/followers/networks If consumers don’t fi nd you on social media, they • will fi nd your competitors You need to know what is being said about your • business and monitor its reputation Consumers want to be engaged with and marketed • to through social media

Social media is consumer-driven and viral. It is instant and limitless “word of mouth” advertising.

Small business owners need to think of social media as online networking. You are simply interacting with

people and marketing your business. To get started, focus on the social media network that your target market is using. Create a profi le, get familiar with how it works, how to interact, etc. Th en add another network and do the same thing. Yes, there will be a learning curve with each social media network, so allow yourself the time – it is an investment in your business. Just remember that the key to social media success is to be active and build relationships with people. Don’t let being overwhelmed and confused about social media prevent you from getting involved… and missing opportunities. Just get started :)Virtually Yours Tip of the Month: When creating your social media network profi les, use keywords related to your industry and/or location. And, add a little personality...don’t be too serious. Th ese profi les are indexed by search engines and could help get your business found online. ■

Are You Taking Advantage of Social Media?

Your social comfort zone establishes the boundaries for your life. Most people take the same route to work every day, eat the same food,

shop at the same stores, and visit with the same friends. We are indeed creatures of habit, and we tend to repeat behavior—unless something forces us to make a change. Is your social comfort zone a prison or a playground? Do you feel locked and limited, or free to explore and expand? Insanity has been defi ned as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting diff erent results. Th e boundaries of one’s social comfort zone are established in childhood. An individual who is equipped with an excellent education and a wide range of experiences is best prepared to handle life with confi dence,

ease, and grace. A person who is impoverished social ly wil l experience

diminished self-esteem; he or she will withdraw from new experiences that others eagerly embrace and thus be limited. Life Skills Sep2010 Here are four ways you can expand your social comfort zone and increase your opportunities in life. 1. Gain Knowledge – Th ere are endless opportunities today to learn

anything you desire. Th e world of knowledge is only a Google search away; books, videos, podcasts, and teaching tools abound.

2. Take Classes – While books and individually oriented research are great ways to gather information, social skills are best developed in a group setting with a qualifi ed coach who can guide you through the process.

3. New Experiences – Search out new opportunities and experiences beyond your comfort zone; it is in these situations that we discover our strengths and weaknesses.

4. Practice – Daily practice and repetition are keys to mastery. Don’t wait to use your new skills until you are faced with a challenging situation. Remember, the time to study is not when you are taking the test!

Eighty-fi ve percent of success in life is based on strong social skills. What if you simply improved your skills slightly? Is it possible, then, that the quality of your life at home, in the community, and in the workplace might also improve? Over the years, I have worked with thousands of individuals who decided to expand their social comfort zone. Without exception, every person was so happy they fi nally set aside the time and took action. Th ey found their new level of polish and confi dence opened doors of opportunity that had previously been closed to them. Bonus: As you expand your social comfort zone, you will also be expanding your children’s. In 2007, locavore was Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year. If you’ve never heard the term or

you’re a little surprised that someone actually picks a word of the year, a locavore is someone who eats primarily from the local food supply. You would

probably expect that three years later its usage and practitioners would be commonplace but it turns out it takes a lot of

time and eff ort to plan and shop all of your meals locally. Th e good news? You don’t have to go full-blown locavore to enjoy some of the benefi ts. Ease into it gently with a few of these suggestions:• Join a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).

You buy a share at the beginning of the growing season and at harvest time you get a portion of the harvest, usually a lot more than you expected. Some CSA’s allow you to help in the fi elds either as a volunteer or to reduce the cost of your share.

• Buy from local grocers committed to stocking local foods. Even the larger grocery store chains have begun prominently displaying an item’s origin, especially when it is locally sourced.

• Support restaurants that deal with local farmers and feature local ingredients. Chefs know that locally grown produce is generally sold within 24 hours of harvest. If you’ve ever had corn straight form the fi eld, peaches ripe from the tree, or tomatoes actually ripened on the vine, you know that the time between harvest and consumption is crucial to fl avor.

• Frequent one of the over 4000 Farmer’s Markets nationwide or roadside stands that feature locally grown or raised foods. Th e selection is rarely limited to just produce. You will fi nd grass fed beef, free range chickens, eggs, honey, and pickled or preserved items made with local ingredients.

Estimates are that as much as 90% of the money you spend at the local produce stand or farmer’s market stays in the community. Th at’s a return that’s worth the eff ort. ■

Setting business goals, just as setting personal ones, provide direction, purpose and motivation on the road to success. One of the diffi culties

most self-employed business people face is stopping long enough from their daily responsibilities to focus time on planning and goal setting. Th is is one of the reasons many small businesses fail to prosper. Goal setting is not only a good thing; it is a necessary task to ensure growth and business development. It makes your business tomorrows possible As you begin the job of goal setting, a few guidelines must be followed. Keep in mind that inspiring and positive goals will result in growth. Wording is everything.

Business goals need to be relevant. Th ey must be applicable to your business and result in growth. Watch for goal statements that result in busy work with no value added to your bottom line. A goal of handing out 100 business cards

a week sounds good but rarely adds business. Th is goal is truly misguided. Th e way to grow a business is to build business relationships with clients who need your services or products. Dropping off cards just for the sake of “getting your name out” does not result in positive growth equal to eff ort and money expended. Build those relationships by thinking about what you can do for the client. Learn to listen and see. Identify their needs and respond to their needs. I believe you can listen a client into existence. Not all business goals have to be measured fi nancially. Relationships guarantee a long lasting and stable business. Your business goals must be actionable and measurable. Refrain from being too abstract and vague. What moves you to action? Work to inspire yourself and your staff and use words that measure when success shall come and how it will be recognized. Goals without action are just pretty words. Once written, read those goals everyday to maintain your focus on the future. Make sure your goals are not set so high that you face failure and disappointment daily. Set increments of measurable success. Strive to grow and develop in every area of your business. Need to add accounting and bookkeeping skills? Want to learn how to present yourself and your business more professionally? Set goals that encourage education and development. Also, make sure the goals are not so low that you lose the desire to reach them. Th ere must be reward built in to continually move you forward. Business goals must provide satisfaction and recognition of a job well done. It must stretch you. Business goals must feel worthwhile. Th ey must have purpose. Be creative in your goal setting. Challenge yourself to move so you and your business won’t be left behind. ■

In the last 12 years, 480 children have died nationwide from heat stroke

suff ered while in a vehicle. Half of these were children that were forgotten by a parent or other caregiver, and nearly 20 percent died when parents knowingly left their child in a vehicle. Th e other died playing in an unattended vehicle. Of these 480 fatalities, 66 occurred in Texas. Th rough early August, 34 children have died nationwide from heat stroke while in a vehicle. Th ese include 5 more unfortunate deaths since August 11th; 2010 has now eclipsed 2009 (33) with more heat to come. All of these tragic deaths are preventable. To help bring awareness to this issue, the National Weather Service is using the slogan “Beat the Heat, Check the Backseat” to remind people to remember to check for small children in a car seat, and to never leave children

unattended in a vehicle, even for a few moments. The following are basic safety recommendations:

Never leave a child unattended in a • vehicle. Not even for a minute! If you see a child unattended in a hot • vehicle, call 9-1-1 immediately! Be sure that all occupants leave • the vehicle when unloading. Don't overlook sleeping babies. Always lock your car and ensure • children do not have access to keys or remote entry devices. If a child is missing, check the car • fi rst, including the trunk. Teach your children that vehicles are • never to be used as a play area. If a child is missing, ALWAYS • CHECK THE CAR FIRST! Keep a stuff ed animal in the car seat. • When the child is put in the seat,

place the animal in the front with the driver - Or - place your purse or briefcase in the back seat as a reminder that you have your child in the car. Make “look before you leave” a • routine whenever you get out of the car. Ensure your child care provider will • call you if your child does not show up for school.

Pets are family, too! Never leave them in a vehicle during the summer. ■
