His examples are a little more advanced than something I would try, at least not having done a lot of scroll sawing up to now. His “Indian and Eagle” was very impressive, and the natural edge cutohe had really was a beautiful piece. The clock tower was also an impressive piece, but I don’t know if I would have the patience for it. Maybe with practice! I would like to see his “Eiel Tower!” Work safe, and share your hobby! RON REUTER GUILD PRESIDENT Rockler Grand Opening This last month Rockler had their Open House series of events. I went to the Feb 2nd and Feb 9th openings. I ran into a lot of Guild members both days. The first day was nice, but I have to admit I really wanted to see April Wilkerson at the second Saturday. I have been watching her videos on YouTube ever since Rockler announced they were going to have her at the store. I enjoy her enthusiasm, the way she is willing to take on ANYTHING, really seems to enjoy what she does, and she does some very nice work. Her meet-and-greet seemed to be a huge success, although too short. Check out her videos and support Rockler. The cupcakes were great!

Ron’s Ramblings Hello Everyone,Dave Hensen came through with a very nice presentation on scroll sawing. His examples are a little more advanced than something I would try, at least not having done a lot of scroll sawing up to now. His “Indian and Eagle” was very impressive, and the natural edge cutoff he had really was a beautiful piece. The clock tower was also an impressive piece, but I don’t know if I would have the patience for it. Maybe with practice! I would like to see his “Eiffel Tower!” Work safe, and share your hobby!

Rockler Grand Opening This last month Rockler had their Open House series of events.

Our Gallery at The Woodworking Shows As a new Guild member, this was of course my first time manning our booth at this year’s Woodworking Shows. Man, what a great experience! Not only did we have a truly impressive sample of our members’ talent to enjoy, but chatting with the other members in the booth and talking to various folks who stopped by was really a treat. The crowd was a bit thin on the Sunday morning I worked, but from what I hear it was still a great weekend of exposure for us. Regardless, it was great to see people come by the booth and watch them ogle all the impressive work our members contributed.I didn’t spend much time at the show in general, but one highlight for me was turning my first pen at the booth they had set up benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project. It was my first time using a lathe, but the guys running the program were very helpful, and it was very satisfying going from a blank to a finished piece in one quick session. A great experience for a great cause - can’t argue with that!

Ron R.’s Woodworking Show Thoughts Neu’s Woodworkers’ Show The Neu’s show on February 23rd was again, a lot of fun. Keith put us right at the front door, so you had to see us when you came in, which was excellent. Ron Pederson, Jay Pilling, Jim Schlarb, and myself occupied the table all day. As you walked around, you could see artists from all areas of woodworking - pen turners, salt and pepper mills, cutting boards, guitar makers, clock makers, and our old friend, Klaus Zunker, the carver. And on top of that, they fed us pizza. You couldn’t ask for more. We did pick up a new member, which is always good, and Neu’s gave us a $50 gift card for the Christmas Party Raffle. Harvey and Keith Neu were each given a pen from the Guild to show our appreciation for what they do for us. Michelle Neu left before we could give her one, but we’ll catch her later. Many members showed up to say “Hi,” which is always nice. It was a real good turn out and exposure for us. Thanks to everyone who helped - looking forward to next year.

The Woodworking Shows The Woodworkers’ Show was, again, another good time for members who participated. It seemed a little bigger than last year, and I hear next year will be a little bigger again. We can only hope! The bigger they get, the more people we may get a chance to sign up. Our display got a lot of attention, and it seemed a lot of people were interested in what we do. Many that I talked to where interested in the fact that we were getting into our own work shop/classroom. It’s one thing to show people all that we do, but it’s even more impressive to tell them, “we are planning to have classes on making the same item they are holding, or something similar.” Our new posters on the back wall were quite a hit. People could see an actual monthly meeting and a workshop. Many members would point to them to show people what we were talking about. Thank you Tom Masnica for putting a “rush” on the posters. Not to mention, “Thank You” to all who occupied the booth.  Let’s hope for great new year in the Guild!

Future Workshop Plans It’s been a little while since the last round of work on the workbenches ended in December, and we’re looking to get the ball rolling again in that arena. These workshop projects have always been a great source of camaraderie and hands-on experience for those who participate, and there will be no shortage of projects that we’ll need help with as we continue setting up the workshop. A list of projects we discussed at the last board meeting included:- Finish the workbenches: Applying finish, attaching the tops,

installing vises, drilling dog holes, …- Build a lumber rack- Build a clamp rack- Frame out a couple walls to better utilize our space- Make several shop stoolsIf you have experience in any of these areas or have other ideas for making our workshop a great space, please let an officer know - we’ll be discussing how to manage and coordinate these shop projects at the March meeting!

Thanks, George Webb! The Guild would like to publicly thank our local George Webb’s restaurant for donating two $25 gift cards for us to raffle off! It’s always a great option for before or after our Thursday meetings, during our weekend workshop sessions, or any time you’re in the neighborhood. Whenever you decide to go, you’ll probably run into at least one Guild member named Ron while you’re there!

Board Meeting Notes (February 28th, 2019) Attendees: Jerry Anson, Norm Lange, Alex Leffelman, Tom Masnica, Jeff Nebel, Eric Novac, Ron Pederson, Jay Pilling, Ron Reuter, Jim Schlarb, Greg WaldoTreasury: Balance of $9,033.07 as of 1/31/19Membership: There were 38 members and guests present at the February 7th meeting (winter is hard).Notes: Norm reported the toy group held a recent meeting and is looking for any spare legos anyone would like to donate. He also has new pictures of toys that should be put on the website and Facebook. Harvey and Keith Neu were given pens in appreciation for hosting us at their February 23rd show. An audit of the Guild’s financial records is still a priority to be done. Ron P. has received two $25 gift cards from George Webb’s for future Guild use. Ron has also received an advertising payment from Rockler and is waiting for a copy of the ad they would like to run in the RIPSAW. Jay reported Greg Tamm of Sawstop will be the April speaker, May is still open and woodcarver Bryan Berenson will be the September speaker. The June roundtable meeting last year was short of presenters and needs to be addressed for this year. The board discussed getting the workshops going again and getting the basement at Woodcraft in shape. Projects include finishing the workbenches, hanging electrical pipe for the dust collector, disposing of unused items and tv monitors, putting locks on cabinet doors, and constructing a clamp rack, lumber rack and stools. Jay made a jig for drilling holes in the workbenches for the holdfasts. The next workshop is tentatively scheduled for March 23rd. There is a need for one or two workshop chairmen and a request will be made at the next Guild meeting. Ron R. reported he should have pricing for Bessey clamps by next week, hopefully before the meeting. A reminder that Board Meetings are held monthly, and member input and participation are encouraged. Respectfully submitted by Jeff Nebel

Donations - NOTICE The guild is regularly asked if it accepts donations of tools or equipment from estates or from woodworkers who are leaving the craft for one reason or another. The answer is YES. As a 501(c)(3), we are permitted to accept such donations and will provide appropriate receipts for tax purposes. We will not provide appraisal services or selling advice. A donation is an excellent way to honor the memory of the woodworker while supporting the Mission of the Guild. If you are considering such a gift or know someone who might be, please contact an officer listed above in this issue of RIPSAW.
