2013 marked another year

of growth and opportunity for the WWHF. We expanded the reach of our perinatal services and launched a new dementia education initiative.

In total, we helped 4,236

women with our free health education, service, and

outreach programs. Our 27 staff are located in 6 different

communities and our initiatives reach every county in the state. I am proud to continue working with a diverse group of partners and supporters statewide. Thank you for believing in our mission as we work to help Wisconsin women and their families reach their healthiest potential.

The GrapeVine Project (GVP) is a health education program founded in 2002.

Women attend free education sessions statewide, facilitated by trained nurses on important women’s health topics.

636 women were served in 2013. Participants showed an increase in knowledge of 20% on critical health topics based on a comparison of pre and post-test scores.

7th Annual Dialogue

Women & Aging: The Impact of Dementia

Bone Density Screenings

WWHF staff and volunteers provided free bone density screenings at 15

community events around the state, serving 197 women in 2013. At these events, we educated women about risk factors, recommended levels of calcium and

Vitamin D intake, along with good sources of calcium in unexpected foods. All of which can help reduce the risk of bone fractures.

“When I found out I was pregnant I was a ‘pack-a-day’ smoker. WIC and First

Breath helped me a lot . . . Now I’ve quit smoking and am much

healthier and happier.”

Why is Dementia a women’s health issue? Women are at the center of the dementia epidemic. Almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s are women. Additionally, over 60% of dementia caregivers are women.

Dialogue Discussion Topics

Risk factors for dementia Helping a loved one when seeking a diagnosis Patient and caregiver support Opportunities for research involvement

First Breath (FB) is a smoking cessation program for pregnant women implemented throughout the state. WWHF staff train prenatal care providers in evidence-based best practices for tobacco cessation counseling, so that they are able to help the women they serve reduce or remove tobacco from their lives.

86% of participants abstained, quit, or cut back on their tobacco use.

72 FB trained clinicians attend the annual Statewide Meeting

in Steven’s Point on March 28

One in two women will break a bone in their lifetime due to osteoporosis. For women, the incidence is greater than that of a heart attack, stroke, and breast cancer combined.

FB Participant Testimonial

The Annual Dialogue is a moderated panel discussion of state and national leaders in prevention and treatment. Attendees learn about innovative solutions and strategies that can improve healthcare outcomes for Wisconsin communities. In 2013, we covered the topic of women and aging, with a focus on the impact of dementia in the state. 350 people attended these free events.
