about registration from USMS. If you are unable to register on-line, you may print a form from the Wisconsin Masters website

at https://www.clubassistant.com/c/A0F3601/file/Docs/regform.pdf, or request a form from the Wisconsin Registrar, whose

name, address, and phone number are listed on the first page under WI LMSC Officers. Please note, Workout Groups may reg-

ister beginning October 1, and must be registered by November 1, to enable members to select the group when they register.

Workout group leaders who rely on the USMS excess personal accident insurance for their workouts are encouraged to read

the coverage rules on the USMS website, For Volunteers tab, Guide to Operations, Insurance and Risk Management section for

any changes in this regard.

Request of Swimmers and Relays Achieving State Records

If anyone swims in a USA Swimming meet and breaks a Wisconsin Masters Swimming State Record, and the pool is on the

USMS list of measured pools, then the swimmer is responsible for reporting those swims to Jeanne Seidler

([email protected]), so it can be included in both the State records and the USMS Top 10 records. Also, if a swimmer

breaks a record at an out-of-state meet, either USA Swimming or USMS, or at an international meet, they need to notify

Jeanne, as it is impossible to track all of the meets swimmers compete in. Thanks for your cooperation in this.

COACHES CORNER- LONG COURSE NATIONALS MINNESOTA 2017 This past August, I had the opportunity to coach/observe the Wisconsin Masters that competed for Wisconsin on the Regional WMAC Team. This group did an awesome job with men and women combining for a third place finish with the ladies taking second in the women's scoring! I will report through "coaching eyes" and leave most of the statistics and times to the National Summary article by Mary Schneider and Records Chairman Jeanne Seidler. It was amazing that this team was primarily a collection of "Wisconsin's Who's Who" in the over 55 age groups. This included a combination of veteran "YMCA swimmers" and Wisconsin club masters with the addition of a few new older folks. This collec-tion of personal long time friends and the swimmers I did not know, but long time respected, was great for me. The under 55 age group veterans combined with "their elders" to lead about a dozen nationally competing newbies to some great swims. Their positive attitude and solid swims influenced the new ones "to get after it." I think on the team motivational level, the often unheralded 1,500 swimmers "got things rolling" on Day 1 with four great swims: David Watts (our first swimmer, 4th), James Biles (National Champion), Alex Girard (potential Packer linebacker, 3rd), and Molly Woodford (National Champion-winning by two seconds). What a great way to start the team scoring! Team scoring continued led by the following top ten individual women's scorers: Meghan La Point 11, Mindy Seidler 20, Erin Schneider 31, Rachael Hawley 37, Molly Woodford 38, Nancy Krampitz 42, Candy Christenson 46, Shelley Nolden 49, Jane Dil-lon Stewart 50, and Melinda Mann 61. The top ten individual scorers for the men included: Scott Conley 16, Bobby WU 20, Carl Millholland 23, Nick Hora 25, Tom Meehan 25, Greg Hollub 28, Scott Richards 31, James Biles 32, George May 36 and Tom Grisa 46. (Special note that our two "most mature by year's" swimmers Jane Dillon Stewart and George May combined for 86 points)! Finally, in regards to team scoring, many other swimmers contributed especially in the relays! Congratulations all! I want to recognize the spirit of competition and love of swimming brought by teammates Scott Conley and Francisco Lopez. Both were "regulars" on the deck for the team, and both "gave it" despite some hampering, physical stuff. Finally, I wish to thank the swimmers and their coaches for the preparation and training that went into this effort! We had over forty different swimmers that trained at a number of different Wisconsin sites in a number of different ways all managing to be ready to swim fast at the U of M! Swimming fast with your teammates is fun! Nationally, this long course team accomplished a lot as well as did the short course team that swam Riverside in spring. Yet, Wisconsin still does not get the respect it should. We are not one of the "glitter teams." In fact, much of the US Master's world does not even know where Wisconsin is located! However, we can fix the above and have some motivation for the next seven frozen months! What if the women won? What if the combined team made a top bid? The answer can be found at INDY, Spring 2018. Thanks again WMAC National Teams 2017, Fred Russell WMAC Coach

U.S. Masters Swimming Recognition and Awards Swimmer gives back—and gets recognized!

Members of U.S. Masters Swimming don’t confine their participation to the pool. There are many volunteer opportunities for their talent, expertise, and generosity. USMS recognizes the commitment of those who give back with the Dorothy Donnelly Service Award, named to honor one of USMS's outstanding volunteers. The award recognizes those whose contributions stand out in service to local, regional, and national programs. Up to 15 people are selected each year and nominations come from Local Masters Swimming Committees, clubs, and individuals.

Elyce Dilworth has been a continuous member of the Wisconsin LMSC for at least 15 years and a member of its Finance Com-mittee since 2006, a year after attending her first U.S Masters convention in 2005. Since 2013, she has served as Chair of the Au-dit Committee for the organization while simultaneously holding positions on the Investment Committee. Using her knowledge of accounting and controls, she is the one that audits the financial records for the Wisconsin Local Masters Swim Committee. Elyce has always pitched in when needed, and her steady work makes her a role model for other volunteers and an appropriate recipi-ent of the 2017 Dorothy Donnelly Service Award.

Open Water Rule Change

For open water meets, it is now allowable for a competitor to hold on to a kayak or physical structure, as long as no forward mo-tion made. This rule may be implemented by the meet director, but it must be specified in the meet information as to whether this is allowable, or if it will disqualify the competitor.

Timing Changes for National and World Records These FINA rules were effective 9/21/2017: A. World records, USMS records, and USMS Top 10 times may be established when the times are reported by an automatic

primary timing system. B. USMS Top 10 times may be established when the automatic primary timing system fails if the times are reported by a semi-

automatic secondary system using three, two, ot one valid button(s).

Long Distance Swimming by Mary Jo Driscoll

Fall has arrived and for those of in Wisconsin it means saying goodbye to outdoor open water swimming (however those last gasps of summer in late September sure were a nice way to extend the outdoor swimming opportunities!) This past summer was a great season in Wisconsin for open water swimming. Area events such as Big Shoulders, MOWS, Big Swell Devil’s Lake and the 1st annual Big Swell Milwaukee all took place under pretty good to great conditions. For those distance swimmers among us do not fear - there are some USMS events for you to participate in over the fall and win-ter to keep yourself ready and in shape for next year’s open water season. Right now through November 15th the USMS National Championship 3000/6000 e-postal event is taking place. This is an individ-ual and relay event in which participants swim either 3000 or 6000 yards or meters in a short course 25 yard or 25 meter pool and record their splits/time and submit to USMS. More information can be found at the following link: https://www.clubassistant.com/club/meet_information.cfm?c=1287&smid=8519 January 1 - February 28, 2018 are the dates for the one hour e-postal event, and May 15 - September 15, 2018 are the dates for the 5K/10K long course e-postal event. Stay tuned for entry information and details. Information on all USMS Championship long distance events through 2019 as well as the e-postal events can be found on the USMS web site at the following link: http://www.usms.org/content/ldchamps
