Wipro Science Education Fellowship: Global Funding, Local ActionThank you for your interest in the Wipro Science Education Fellowship (Wipro SEF). We hope that you will consider applying for this opportunity to grow professionally as a classroom teacher and instructional leader.

Each year, up to twenty science teachers from grades K–12 in our five partner districts—Boston, Braintree, Cambridge, Malden, and Pembroke—are selected as Wipro Science Education Fellows. Educators with a minimum of three years of teaching experience and who are committed to remaining in the classroom in their school district for the next two years are eligible for this two-year professional development program. Each teacher receives a stipend of $10,000 for completing all requirements of their fellowship.

Wipro Science Education Fellows are committed to:› Improving teacher practice› Growing as teacher-leaders› Increasing student achievement in the sciences

The Wipro Science Education Fellowship is made pos-sible by a grant from global information technology company Wipro Ltd. in collaboration with the Center of Science and Mathematics in Context (COSMIC), a joint venture of the College of Education and Human Development and the College of Science and Math-ematics at the University of Massachusetts Boston.

Creating a Corps of ScienceTeacher-LeadersThe program focuses on professional development in three specific areas: Thinking about Teaching: Fellows engage in research-based, structured inquiry into their own teaching and growth. Educational Leadership: Fellows identify opportu-nities for them to take a leadership role within their district or with their peers. Individual Growth: Fellows identify and pursue opportunities for growth based on their own profes-sional growth plans.

Collaborative and Individual Work Leads to GrowthWipro Science Education Fellows work in small and large groups as well as individually to improve their classroom practice and to set and meet personal professional development goals.

COLLABORATIVE WORK› Develop relationships with teachers across content

areas and levels› Participate in the SEF-adapted Collaborative

Coaching and Learning of Science(CCLS) model based on the group’s schedule

› Observe other teachers’ videotaped lessons and give feedback; receive peer feedback on your lessons

› Anchor feedback and reflections in research› Look at teaching and learning across content areas

and levels

INDIVIDUAL WORK› Develop and carry out an individualized growth plan

that has a clear vision and identifiable benchmarks› Reflect weekly› Monthly assignments for each fellows’ meeting › Videotape several classroom lessons› Lead and videotape a professional development

opportunity› Meet regularly with your advisor

Year One: Thinking About Teaching› Monthly Fellows Meetings. All fellows gather

once a month as a group to engage in professional development in the areas of instruction, reflective practice, adult learning, and leadership.

› Collaborative Coaching and Learning of Science (CCLS) groups. Smaller groups of fellows meet in CCLS groups to share videos of themselves in their classroom as a way to reflect on science content and pedagogy and improve their teaching of science. These small professional learning communities determine their own schedules, courses of study, and the lessons they will all be taping and observing.

Year Two: Implementing The Individualized Growth Plan The plan consists of a clear vision that focuses on ways to improve the teacher’s own instruction and leadership by the end of the second year. Fellows work with an advisor who helps them develop their own professional growth plan that incorporates the type of professional development the fellow would like to either develop or lead for other science teach-ers. Fellows also meet with their headmaster/princi-pal to determine how to be a leader while still being in the classroom. They meet on a monthly basis in district groups with their science coordinator to talk about how their work supports district initiatives, as well. Each fellow has a small fund to purchase sup-port materials or attend professional development.
