New logistics center in the USA

Shortlist 3

To our valued customers

in retrospect, we foresaw a difficult year and made the appropriate preparations. there were ques-tions we needed to answer regarding the weak euro, slow growth in switzerland and europe, uncertainties plaguing the swiss retail sector, and declining prices.

in a first step, we had to review our costs and gain awareness of which products really match our expertise, and which markets offer the biggest opportunities for the future. against this backdrop, it is not surprising that we achieved growth in europe with newly developed products and to some extent lost business with commodities. thus, we were able to increase our market share in europe to 60% while our sales quota in switzerland declined.

But to be successful in the long term, we had to seek new channels into growth markets as well. we would like to outline our forward-looking considerations – apart from our current business – and the decisions that will have a sustainable influence on our growth perspectives.

wipf aG has decided to strengthen the sale of valves in the usa. for this project, we found an outstanding agent who knows both the packaging market and our products well. additionally, we expanded our logistics resources and can now deliver valves much quicker with higher flexibility and reactivity from a warehouse in the us.

this issue will also inform you about the company we established in turkey. turkey is one of the few countries with stable economic growth. it therefore makes sense for us to have a presence in this market. the new subsidiary is not intended to be a low-cost manufacturing site; instead, backed by our strengths in pouches, we want to conquer a leading market position with preformed pouches in this growing market.

needless to say, we enjoy acquainting you with our projects, and we are delighted to have oppor-tunities to take on new challenges. however, we are fully aware of the fact that our primary objec-tive is to evolve and service our domestic market. this is where we want to move forward and implement new ideas together with you, our long-standing partners. a separate page will give you impressions of three new products.

so there’s much to discover in this issue. thank you cordially for your commitment throughout the past year. i personally look forward to the challenges that we can jointly master.

with kind regards,

4th wipf day 2013: during the presentation, a variety of design themes will give you an impression of the system’s remarkable variability. Get amazed by its flexibility, speed, and excellent printing quality.

the students’ initiative “plant-for-the-plan-et” was launched in January 2007; it has its origins in an essay on the climate crisis written by felix finkbeiner when he was 9 years old. at the end of his essay, inspired by wangari maathai, whose followers had planted 30 million trees in africa, felix en-visaged that children could plant a million trees in every single country and thus off-set Co2 emissions on a global scale.Currently, about 100,000 children in over 100 countries are pursuing this goal and have announced the planting of 1000 bil-lion trees planet-wide. overall, more than 12 billion trees have been planted world-wide since then. But we, too, can support the “plant-for-the-planet” initiative. every individual should plant 150 trees. that will make it possible to reach the 1000-billion tree mark by 2020. so far, plantings have taken place in Costa rica, ecuador, Congo and namibia. at the moment, malaysia is receiving donations!

with a new logistics center in the usa, we want to be ready for the future growth of our wiCovaLve® aroma-protection and pressure-relief valve. our valve has become more and more popular, especially in the usa. the demand for wiCovaLve® is due particularly to its benchmark quality and long shelf. “we see plenty of potential and believe in further growth,” said vp sales & marketing malte Jonsson, com-menting on the expansion plans. malte Jonsson expects sales in the usa to keep rising in the coming years. the new warehouse is centrally located only a few hours from Chicago. wipf can tap into the excellent distribution capabilities of the center and serve us customers within days. we will also exploit the potential of the new logistics center with various mar-keting activities.

as we pursue our expansion strategy, we will continue to invest in the turkish growth market and in neighbouring countries. the new subsidiary will allow us to inten-sify our partnerships with customers in turkey. “in the domain of the packaging industry, turkey is a dynamic and active market,” noted Christian wipf, Chairman of the Board of wipf aG. “we will further strengthen our position with this step and leverage it to optimally launch our packag-ing products. this will assure sustainable success in the pouch business,” he pre-dicts with conviction.

Success at trade fairs abroad

Tea & Coffee World Cup, Singapore

From 28 February to 2 March 2013, industry experts convened at the latest edition of Tea & Coffee World Cup in Singapore. Our presence at the fair was a success: after all, some 3500 producers, importers, exporters, and wholesalers of tea and coffee products mostly from South East Asia came together in Singapore.

our focus there was on the wiCovaLve® aroma-protection/pressure-relief valve. it attracted considerable attention among visitors. “we’re very pleased with the out-come of the show this year. our slogan – “wiCovaLve® – world’s #1 degassing valve” – is credible and persuasive. this was confirmed in many discussions with customers,” said malte Jonsson, vp sales & marketing. we are especially delighted that the demand for our valves is growing continuously in asia. Given this trend and the many interesting conversations, we are convinced that the event will have a tangible impact on business in the com-ing months.

Cfia, Rennes

Cfia is one of the most important trade shows for the food industry in France. It took place in Rennes for the 17th time from 12 to 14 March 2013. With more than 1300 exhibitors and com-prehensive annex events, Cfia im-pressed its visitorship composed of over 15,000 industry insiders.

Cfia was a promising show for us, and there is no doubt that the event was very professionally organized. we were able to present our contemporary deliverables in many interesting discussions. numerous visitors at our stand were particularly inquisitive about the topic “digital printing for flexible packaging”. But we also had the opportunity to present our extensive line of packaging systems for the food sector and demonstrate our in-depth know-how in this domain. “we are pleased with the good quality of the contacts and the interest expressed in our products and technologies. for us, Cfia is an ideal platform for presenting our company. we received very interesting enquiries from many of our visitors. this is one of the key criteria of a good fair,” explained malte Jonsson, vp sales & marketing.

NCA Convention, San Francisco

The National Coffee Association was established in 1911 as one of the first organizations of the US coffee industry. Ever since, the NCA has been supporting a large number of American coffee businesses and organizing various events each year. The 102nd NCA Convention took place in San Francisco from 21 to 23 March 2013 and among others attracted key decision-makers of major US coffee roasters.

we were there for the first time, and the professional welcome was delightful. “it was a valuable experience for us to at-tend the nCa Convention. the positive visitor feedback related to our wiCo-vaLve® presentation and our local logis-tics centre was flattering. we made the acquaintance of many prospective cus-tomers and had a number of productive discussions,” said us agent Bruce ped. the constructive exchange of views made it clear that our valve technology is an at-tractive proposition. “this strengthens our conviction that the wiCovaLve® will occupy a significant position in the us marketplace,” Bruce ped added.

Packaging with a message

Guadeloupe-based coffee producer SAS EDOUARD developed a new design concept for its 250-gramme “CAPRESS®” brand product. The at-tention-getting high-gloss pack with many convenience features arouses the curiosity of consumers and links a sublime coffee experience with mod-ern styling.

the four exquisite coffee varieties that have been distributed under the “Capress®” brand in the Caribbean since early 2013 are packaged with a two-ply poLiveL® laminate. the film, specially developed by wipf, assures optimum protection of the ground coffee against aroma loss, oxida-tion, dehydration, and extrinsic odours. the integrated wiCovaLve® aroma-pro-tection/pressure-relief valve provides ad-ditional protection. to achieve the high-gloss effect, the film is gravure-printed with translucent inks. this glaze-like finish generates partial light reflections on the metallized surface. the coffee packs also are endowed with many convenience fea-tures such as tear notches, laser perfora-tions, and zippers. the high-gloss pack-age with its many practical features is a genuine eye-catcher.

Chocolat Frey, Switzerland’s leading chocolate producer, has expanded its product line. Since spring, its “Chocobloc Milk Mini” and “Choco-bloc Assorted Mini” products will hit the shelves in the Asian market. It’s a tempting proposition: Superior milk chocolate with an almond-honey-nou-gat filling. Swiss chocolate – pure bliss!

the new packaging is crafted from a pre-mium, aluminium-free poLiveL® laminate. it ideally protects the product against aroma loss, dehydration, and extrinsic odours. the gravure technology was chosen to assure a high-fidelity printing result on the film. this gives the packag-ing added visual appeal to complement the unique tactile experience. Consumers also appreciate our convenience features such as the tear notch, double laser per-foration, zipper, and carrying handle. and last, but not least: the integrated window is another functional asset that offers a “taste preview”, so to speak, of the tempt-ing products. it exemplifies the pivotal role of packaging design at the point of sale.

Bläuel – a quality brand for Greek olive oil and olives – is one of Greece’s flag-ship enterprises. The company is a pioneer in ecologically sound agricul-ture and a vocal advocate for sustain-ability. Its organic olives have been packaged in stand-up pouches since early 2013.

the stand-up pouch is made of a new poLiveL® laminate with a barrier. it opti-mally protects the product against aroma loss, oxidation, dehydration, and extrinsic odours. to assure that the organic olives look perfect on the shelves and preserve their freshness after the packaging is first opened, the pouch is endowed with con-venience features such as a zipper, dis-play window, tear notch, and double laser perforation.Bläuel decided in favour of a stand-up pouch because it is lightweight, versatile, cost-effective, and efficient. with respect to the environmental footprint, flexible packaging has the least impact in the life-cycle comparison and gets very high sus-tainability ratings. at Coop, the organic olives are marketed under the Coop nat-uraplan label.
