In early Roman calendar, it was actually the eighth month and there are 31 days in October. The first frost happens, leaves change colors and leaves fall. About Columbus Day

Christopher Columbus is often portrayed as the first European to sail to the Americas. He is sometimes portrayed as the discoverer of the New World. However, this is controversial on many counts. There is evidence that the first Europeans to sail across the Atlantic were Viking explorers from Scandinavia. In addition, the land was already populated by indigenous peoples, who had 'discovered' the Americas thousands of years before.

Columbus Day originated as a celebration of Italian-American heritage and was first held in San Francisco in 1869. The first state-wide celebration was held in Colorado in 1907. In 1937, Columbus Day become a holiday across the United States. Since 1971, it has been celebrated on the second Monday in October. The date on which Columbus arrived in the Americas is also celebrated as the DÃa de la Raza (Day of the Race) in Latin America and some Latino communities in the USA. However, it is a controversial holiday in some countries and has been re-named in others.

Columbus Day celebrations are controversial because the settlement of Europeans in the Americas led to the deaths of a very large proportion of the native people. It has been argued that this was a direct result of Columbus' actions. It is clear that the arrival of the European settlers led to the demise of a large proportion of the history and culture of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. It has also been argued that Columbus should not be honored for discovering North America, as he only went as far as some islands in the Caribbean and never got as far as mainland America.

History of Halloween Halloween is the season for little ghosts and goblins to take to the

streets, asking for candy and scaring one another silly. Spooky stories

are told around fires, scary movies appear in theaters and pumpkins

are expertly (and not-so-expertly) carved into jack-o'-lanterns.

Amid all the commercialism, haunted houses and bogus warnings

about razors in apples, the origins of Halloween are often overlooked.

Yet Halloween is much more than just costumes and candy; in fact, the

holiday has a rich and interesting history.

Samhain

Halloween, also known as All Hallows' Eve, can be traced back about

2,000 years to a pre-Christian Celtic festival held around Nov. 1 called

Samhain (pronounced "sah-win"), which means "summer's end" in

Gaelic, according to the Indo-European Etymological Dictionaries.

Tricks and games

These days, the "trick" part of the phrase "trick or treat" is mostly an empty

threat, but pranks have long been a part of the holiday.

By the late 1800s, the tradition of playing tricks on Halloween was well

established. In the United States and Canada, the pranks included tipping over

outhouses, opening farmers' gates and egging houses. But by the 1920s and

'30s, the celebrations more closely resembled an unruly block party, and the

acts of vandalism got more serious.

Some people believe that because pranking was starting to get dangerous and

out of hand, parents and town leaders began to encourage dressing up and

trick-or-treating as a safe alternative to doing pranks, Santino said.

However, Halloween was as much a time for festivities and games as it was for

playing tricks or asking for treats. Apples are associated with Halloween, both

as a treat and in the game of bobbing for apples, a game that since the colonial

era in America was used for fortune-telling. Legend has it that the first person

to pluck an apple from the water-filled bucket without using his or her hands

would be the first to marry.

Apples were also part of another form of marriage prophecy. According to

legend, on Halloween (sometimes at the stroke of midnight), young women

would peel an apple into one continuous strip and throw it over her shoulder.

The apple skin would supposedly land in the shape of the first letter of her

future husband's name.

Another Halloween ritual involved looking in a mirror at midnight by

candlelight, for a future husband's face was said to appear. (A scary variation

of this later became the "Bloody Mary" ritual familiar to many schoolgirls.) Like

many such childhood games, it was likely done in fun, though at least some

people took it seriously.

This year’s Guavaween marks the return of Mama Guava. Tampa actress

and teacher Kathi Grau, aka Mama Guava, traditionally led the Guavaween

Mama Guava Stumble Parade. This year she will be on hand to oversee the

costume contest at Centro Ybor at 9 p.m. “It’s just going to be a big

interactive party,” said Keating, noting that the Ybor Merchants Association

also is hosting a series of events the week of Halloween called the Fantasma

Fest. “They’re doing a lot of fun stuff during the day, including a bed race

and a pumpkin patch for the kids.”

Black Cats

There are many superstitions associated with cats, partly because the

cat has lived alongside humans for many millennia. The cat was

worshipped in Egypt and to kill one was considered a capital crime.

When an Egyptian family's cat died, the cat was mummified and the

family went into mourning. Romans, also, considered the cat sacred

and introduced it into Europe. By the 17th Century, however, the cat

began to be associated with witchcraft and its luck turned from good to

bad in many areas. A practice that became popular for a time was to

burn cats and other animals on Shrove Tuesday (before the start of

Lent), in order to protect one's home from fire and other calamities.

Superstitions centering around the black cat are some of the most

well-known and popular superstitions today. It is interesting, though,

because the good or bad luck they possess is dependent on where you

live in the world. In Britain and Japan, having a black cat cross your

path, is considered good luck, whereas if you live in the USA or several

European countries, it is bad luck to have a black cat walk by.

Good luck associated with black cats include:

1. Possessing a black cat.

2. Having a black cat greet you at a door.

3. Having a black cat enter your home.

4. Meeting three black cats in succession.

5. Touching a black cat.

Bad luck associated with black cats include:

1. Meeting a black cat early in the morning.

2. Having a black cat turn its back on you.

3. Scaring or driving away a black cat from your property.

4. Walking under a ladder after a black cat has walked underneath it

The History of the Oktoberfest

Crown Prince Ludwig, later to become King Ludwig I, was married to

Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on 12th October 1810. The

citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on the fields

in front of the city gates to celebrate the happy royal event. The fields

have been named Theresienwiese ("Theresa's fields") in honor of the

Crown Princess ever since, although the locals have since abbreviated the

name simply to the "Wies'n".

Horse races in the presence of the Royal Family marked the close of the

event that was celebrated as a festival for the whole of Bavaria. The

decision to repeat the horse races in the subsequent year gave rise to the

tradition of the Oktoberfest.

6th ANNUAL

The Oktoberfest continues in 1811

In 1811 an added feature to the horse races was the first Agricultural

Show, designed to boost Bavarian agriculture. The horse races, which

were the oldest and - at one time - the most popular event of the festival

are no longer held today. But the Agricultural Show is still held every three

years during the Oktoberfest on the southern part of the festival grounds.

In the first few decades the choice of amusements was sparse. The first

carousel and two swings were set up in 1818. Visitors were able to quench

their thirst at small beer stands which grew rapidly in number. In 1896 the

beer stands were replaced by the first beer tents and halls set up by

enterprising landlords with the backing of the breweries.

The remainder of the festival site was taken up by a fun-fair. The range of

carousels etc. on offer was already increasing rapidly in the 1870s as the

fairground trade continued to grow and develop in Germany.

The Meaning of Mirrors in Folklore and Superstition

Since mankind first saw its own reflection, we have been fascinated by surfaces that cast our image back to us. Possibly because of that fascination, there is an incredibly wide variety of superstitions, myths and urban legends surrounding mirrors specifically and reflective bodies in general. Everyone has heard, for example, that breaking a mirror will bring seven years of bad luck. This superstition dates back to the Romans, who believed that life renewed itself every seven years, and that breaking a mirror would thus cause damage to the soul it was reflecting at the time for that duration. That’s the bad news. The good news is that there are a number of folk remedies for relieving the seven years of bad luck. Early American slaves believed that the bad luck could be washed away by immersing the pieces of the broken mirror in south-flowing water for seven hours. Another tale says that the seven years of bad luck may be kept from taking effect by grinding the shards of the mirror into a fine powder so that they no longer reflect any images at all. Still another says that putting the broken pieces in a bag and burying it will accomplish the same thing. Mirrors were often used in magical and psychic rituals for scrying – remotely viewing another person or place – and communicating. They could also be used in magical rituals of divination – fortune telling and reading of the future. This was known as catoptromancy or enoptromancy, and was described in an ancient Greek text as being performed by lowering a mirror on a thread until its lower edge touched the surface of a basin of water. The person performing the ritual would then pray to the appropriate god or goddess before gazing into the reflections created by the combination of water and mirror.

Spook Hill is a gravity hill, an optical illusion where cars appear to roll up

the spooky hill in Lake Wales, Florida.

Spook Hill is located on the Lake Wales Ridge, a geologically significant

range of sand and limestone hills, which were islands from two to three million

years ago, when sea levels were much higher than at present.

The attraction is adjacent to Spook Hill Elementary School that adopted Casper

the Friendly Ghost as their school mascot. The attraction is also in close proximity

to Bok Tower.

Spook Hill received national media attention when an article about it

appeared on the front page of the Wall Street Journal on October 25, 1990, and it

was featured in a segment on CBS Morning News with Charles Osgood on

November 5, 1990. History of the Legend

After the Seminoles left the Cherokee nation, they settled in Central Florida. One legendary chief, Cufcowellax, settled on the lake which is now known as Lake Wales. It was close to Iron Mountain, which as the highest point in Florida, was sacred to the Indians' Sun God. After several years living in peace, a bull alligator began harassing the tribe and soon began nightly raids on the village, causing fear among the tribe. The brave chief set out to conquer the evil spirt. When he did, the tribe noticed a small lake had formed near the big one. They named it Lake Ticowa. Eventually, the Indians lost their camping grounds to the encroaching white settlers. Circuit riders carrying mail between the coasts used the old trial around Lake Ticowa until they noticed their horses laboring downhill. It was those circuit riders that first called the place Spook Hill.

Four Steps to a Sharper Memory

Elephants may never forget, but most of us humans do, especially as we get older.

Fortunately, you can take some simple steps to improve matters. Here is some

advice from New Choices on how to improve your memory.

� Train your brain. Just as exercising, lifting weights strengthens your

muscles, “exercising” your brain may help boost your memory. Do word

searches and crossword puzzles.

� Get Fit. Nobody knows exactly why, but taking unfit people and making

them fit seems to improve their mental capacities. Get some form of

exercise every day.

� Sleep Well. A restful night greatly improves mental concentration. The

kind of memory that involves reasoning and the kind used to learn motor

skills are both affected by loss of sleep. Get a good night’s sleep.

� Use Cues. Write reminders on sticky-notes and make “To Do” lists. It’s

easy to jot down notes to yourself and they certainly can help. As the

Chinese proverb goes, “The palest ink is better than the best memory.”

This holiday dessert takes the flavor of pumpkin pie and transforms it into a comforting bread pudding drizzled with dulce de leche. Bake it up to 2 days ahead of time, refrigerate, and reheat before serving.

INGREDIENTS

Unsalted butter, room temperature, for dish 1 can (15 ounces) pure pumpkin puree 1 cup whole milk 1/2 cup heavy cream 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 1/4 cup light-brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt 3/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon anise seed, roughly chopped 10 ounces day-old bread, such as brioche or sourdough, cut into 1/2-inch slices or 1-inch cubes 1/2 cup pecans, roughly chopped 1 cup homemade Dulce de Leche, or store-bought, warmed DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 2-quart baking dish. In a large bowl, whisk together pumpkin puree, milk, cream, eggs, brown sugar, salt, vanilla, cinnamon, and anise seed. Arrange bread in dish. Pour custard over bread and top with pecans. Bake until custard is set, 45 minutes. Let cool slightly. Serve warm or at room temperature, drizzled with dulce de leche.

A Step Back in Time – Heritage Village

As you enter Heritage Village you’ll feel as if you had traveled back

in time, visiting an era that existed mare than a century ago.

Walking down the trails, among the pines and palmetto bushes,

you’ll be able to visit the homes that made up Pinellas County’s

historical past. There were magnificent structures such as the seven-

gabled house that the Starr family called home. You’ll see the

homes of the McMullen family and the Coachman family. There

were other smaller more typical houses that dotted the farms and

towns of the county.

Heritage Village provides a glimpse of how the pioneers of Pinellas

County lived, endured and even thrived during those harsh times.

These families coped by raising their own food, making their own

clothes, and tending to the normal situations that cropped up during

that time. OP course, there is an exhibit of the “labor saving”

devices that made the work much “easier”.

The village isn’t just an exhibit of houses. There are two schools and

a church. You’ll be able to visit a blacksmith shop, a sugar cane mill,

a sponge warehouse, and a firehouse.

There is also an exhibit of the Sulpher Springs Railroad depot … the

only building that is not from Pinellas County. But the most

interesting building was the general store. The store was originally

built in 1915. It was donated to the village and restored to look as it

did in 1920. As you stroll inside you’ll see shelves stocked with the

products for the past. Some of these same products are available

today in much different packaging. Heritage Village is located next

to the Botanical Gardens

A Special Ode for Senior Citizens –

Can’t Help but Wonder

Well, it’s taken me years to reach this age,

I actually feel pretty good, at this particular stage.

Oh, I’ve had my ups and downs, of that there’s little doubt,

I’ve had those moments where I just felt like letting out a huge shout.

But, all in all, I guess that I’d just have to admit,

I’ve made it this far and stayed pretty fit.

Several operation, numerous physical exams to boot,

Had no idea there would be all this stuff when I exited the chute.

I am a little slower than I was, say, 20 years ago,

But, have managed to be on top of things – and my body does show.

All the scars, impressions, and hopefully, liver spots, I guess,

I’ve weathered them all and stayed a somewhat organized mess.

However, there is one issue that troubles me, to this day still,

And that’s the subject of all these different colored and shaped medicinal

pills. If anyone out there can help me find a solution to this quandary, I’d

be awful thankful, for sometimes I feel like I[ve got a full tank full.

A row of bottles on my shelf, caused me to pause and analyze myself.

One yellow pill I have to pop, foes to my heart so it won’t stop.

A little white one that I take, toes to my hands so they don’t shake.

The blue ones that I use a lot, tell me I’m happy when I’m really not.

The purple pill goes to my brain, and tells me that I have no pain.

The capsules tell me not to wheeze, or cough or choke or even sneeze.

The red ones, the smallest of them all, go to my blood so I don’t fall.

The orange ones, very big and bright, prevent all my leg cramps late at

night.

Such an array of brilliant colored pills, help to cure all sorts of ills.

But, at this point, what I’d really like to know is what tells each one of

them exactly where to go.
