Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights has fascinated people for thousands of years. Th e Saami (Lapps) thought that the lights in the sky had something to do with the weather.
In Finland they imagined that the northern lights were a refl ection of the Saami following their reindeer with lanterns. Many cultures talk of the northern lights in terms of dancers in the sky.
In the 17th century these lights received the Latin name, Aurora Borealis. Th e poetic meaning of the word ‘aurora’ is the red sky at dawn.
Th e northern lights appear in shades of red, yellow, green, blue, and violet but our eyes are most sensitive to green. Th ey can be seen in a variety of forms, such as patches of light, in the form of streamers, arcs, banks, rays, or as hanging draperies. Th ey can be there for a few minutes or an hour and you never know, each time is as exciting as the fi rst.
If the weather is good and there are no clouds, go outside away from the lights of the town and look up into the sky. It is amazing to see the lights moving in the heavens. You might even hear the sounds that are associ-ated: atmospherics and tweeks.
Th e lights can usually be seen between 21.00 and mid-night, sometimes even later. Enjoy!

For thousands of years reindeer have been the mainstay of the Saami people. In the olden days the Saami followed their animals from the mountains to the coast in a seasonal fl ow.
From the reindeer they got food, milk, cloth-ing and materials to make the tools they needed. Even today almost the whole animal is used. But the way the Saami perform their tasks nowadays is diff erent.
Today heli-copters, snow-mobiles, quads, motorbikes and trucks are used. Instead of having to walk
Reindeer Herding and the Saamithe 200-300 kilometres from mountain to coast twice a year the reindeer are now transported by truck.
To gather the rein deer together in enclosed areas for brand ing, slaughtering and sorting, the Saami use helicopters as well as snow-
mobiles in the winter. If you want to know more about the Saami people, their way of life and the rein-deer, visit Lango Sámi Siida and the Silver Museum in Arjeplog.

ShoppingTake the time to go shopping while you are here. Th ere are a variety of shops that sell many inter-esting and unusual pro ducts. Th ere is an abundance of souvenirs from this region as well as from Swe-den in general. Local food such as fi sh, meat and berries are very popular.
You can buy clothes and shoes for outdoor activities as well as fashion clothes and you can fi nd presents for family and friends back home.
You will receive good personal service in all the local shops. Most people speak English and many also speak German and other foreign languages.

Th ere is a large amount of accommodation at vary-ing prices in both Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur. Th ere are hotels of diff erent standards and sizes, cottages, log cabins, private homes, apartments, resorts, boarding houses both in the wilderness and in the towns.
You also have a variety of restaurants and cafés to choose from, serving local and international food. If you cannot fi nd what you are looking for in this brochure, contact the tourist offi ces in Arje plog and Arvidsjaur and they will help you.

Ice fi shingIce fi shingIce fi shing is a popular pastime of many locals, tourists and some car testers.You can go ice fi shing (called pimpla, in Swedish) in any of the lakes around the towns but many people enjoying ice fi sh-ing in the lakes in the moun-tainous areas of Arjeplog.
Ice fi shing, combined with snow-mobiling, is a popular spare time activity in this area.
‘Fika’When you fi ka you take a break from work or other activities to have a drink, coff ee or tea and a light snack. Th is practice of having fi ka between meals is central to Swedish life.
Th e word fi ka is used for both the act of eating a snack and drinking coff ee/tea and the actual food/drinks that you have.
Th e locals are very happy that there will be a new place to fi ka in March when Helena and Jonny Johansson from Viltbutiken move their shop to the market square (where Nelly’s Café was) and open a combined shop and café.

•• The sign on the side of the roads with a big letter ”M” means that the road is wider there. That is where cars coming from opposite directions can easily meet and pass each other.
•• The big black plastic bags hanging on the side of the roads are put up by the Saami to keep the reindeer from wandering. The bags can be seen as a warning that there may be reindeer close by.
•• If you hit a reindeer or moose while driving on the roads, mark the place for later identifi cation. Kill the animal if it is suffering and contact the police.
•• If you see a moose or a reindeer, or tracks on the side of the road, be extra careful as there are often more animals in the same area. They could be hidden in the forest or behind the snow bank.

HORNAVANSKOLAN
WORK PLACEMENT
During each of the three years, pupils have the opportunity to make study visits and to receive work-place training.
This is possible via work placements at various motor vehicle companies, component manufactur-ers and others associated with the automotive industry in Sweden and in Europe.
CO-OPERATION
We are very pleased with the existing co-opera-tion between Hornavanskolan and the vehicle and component companies in Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur (both local and foreign) in terms of work place-ment, lectures and other forms of involvement.
We hope that this co-operation will ultimately include all the companies that are winter test-ing in the area. This is of vital importance and a decisive factor in guaranteeing a high level of education and training.
The Municipality of Arjeplog would like to thank all the companies that are working with Hornavan skolan for contributing to the success of the education programmes.
AUTOMOTIVE TESTING TECHNOLOGY
Hornavanskolan, with the workshop and tech-nical laboratory, now also provides a new pro-gramme, called ‘Fordonstestteknik’, together with ‘Teknikprogrammet’ - BilSystemTeknik (BST).
We are facing a shift in technology in terms of energy in vehicles. For many years to come, the development of electric and hybrid vehicles will increase and be a large part of the test opera-tions. A vehicle testing technician will also be working with the development of products where safety regulations and recommendations have not yet been decided.
For this reason, the need for greater compe-tence in the physics and chemistry of electricity is much higher now than the usual programme in the automotive program.
Our pupils in the Automotive Testing Technol-ogy programme will therefore have a good foun-dation to stand on when they go out to work or study further. Knowledge of a variety of computer systems is needed as well as the new technology that is becoming increasingly complex and spe-cifi c to vehicles and professional fi elds.
Therefore, our educational programme aims at developing the pupils’ ability to use computers and computer systems in whatever way required.
Once they have completed the training, they will be able to work with installation, service,
troubleshooting, repairs and maintenance of vehicles and measuring equipment in connection with vehicle tests.

Th e Norwegian border is only two hours by car, 139 km from Arjeplog and 225 km from Arvids jaur.
Choose a day when the weather is clear and you will experience the magnifi cent scenery, along the Silver Road, of the unspoilt country-side and the mountains into Norway. On the way, you pass the Arctic Circle where there is a large sign.
Jäckvik is a beautiful village on the Silver Road, 80 km from the Norwegian border. Here you will fi nd a petrol station and small supermarket as well as Jäckviks Fjällcenter with a ski-slope and restaurant.
Th is whole area is very popular in the winter with people who ride snow-mobiles because of the wide open spaces and good snow-mobile trails.
Th ere is a restaurant along the Silver Road, called Restaurant Vuogga in Vuoggatjålme, a resort on the arctic circle. Call and see if they are open before you decide to go there.
Check if the road is openBefore you leave Arjeplog, make sure that the road at the border is open and not blocked with snow.
Two large signs show this information: one sign is situated one kilometre from the town of Arjeplog along the Silver Road, and the other is at the Laisvall turn-off , 26 kilometres from Arjeplog.
Most things are more expensive in Norway than in Sweden and many Norwegians come over the border to Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur to shop.
On the arctic circle there is a large sign, just off the Silver Road.
