Holding Two Things

• Put into a dishpan a few small toys that infantcan hold in one hand. Give infant two toys,one at a time, to hold. If he drops a toy, holdanother one up to his empty hand for his tograsp.

Here’s a rattle, Sarah.Can you hold another one?Now you have two.

• You can also let the infant put the toys in thedishpan and pick their own toys if they areable.

Scooting Baby

• Lay baby on her tummy on a soft rug or playarea. Shake a toy in front of her just out ofher reach and then put it down on the rug.Encourage her to scoot forward and get thetoy.

Face Socks

• Very securely sew bright little pieces ofmaterial or buttons in the shape of a faceonto a sock. Slip the sock over baby’s handand move it a little to get her attention.Encourage her to watch the sock and touchthe pieces of material.

What can you see? Is that a face looking atyou?Can you get that face?

• Be sure baby does not put the buttons orsmall pieces of material into her mouth,especially if baby has teeth.

Many Different Dolls

• Collect many different dolls for baby to playwith. Put them all out in a row on a low openshelf. Call the baby’s attention to the dolls.Talk about the dolls she chooses from theshelf.

That’s a girl doll, Sandra.She has brown eyes.Where are her eyes?Her nose is little like yours.That is a boy doll. He has soft hair.

Do this activity if infant can hold and play with atoy. Spend 2 - 7 minutes on this activity.

Happy Talk

• Make baby's natural attempts at call-and-response into a game.

• Start by helping her figure out all the fun soundsshe can make with her mouth. Wait for her tomake one of her characteristic baby noises, suchas "goo," a raspberry, or a tongue-click, thenimitate it back to her.

• You might also try making a series of rhythmictongue clicks, and see if she responds to thedifferent beats.

• Then show her some of the things you can do:Make an exaggerated smacking kiss, pop yourfinger out of the side of your mouth, or make a b-b-b noise by blowing air out of your mouth whilewiggling your finger on your lips.

• Wait to see if baby tries to make a similar type ofsound back to you — she might surprise you!

• Make baby's natural attempts at call-and-response into a game.

Different Drums

Skills developed: auditory, sense of rhythm, sense ofcause and effect

What you'll need: empty oatmeal containers, ice creamtubs, coffee cans, or any other container with a flexiblecardboard or plastic lid; plastic wrap

• Make a few drums with different sounds so baby canhear the difference between deeper and shallower tones.Turn any can or round-shaped container into a drum by

stretching several layers of strong plastic wrap or a pieceof thick paper over the top and taping it down. Or, eveneasier, use containers that already have drummable lids,such as Tupperware and oatmeal canisters.

• Tape the different drums together with duct or packingtape to make a drum set. Sit on the ground facing babyand place the drums between you. Demonstrate how totap the drums with your palms, fingers, and the heel ofyour hand. You might even try singing some doo-wops todemonstrate different rhythms as you play.

Variation: If your baby can grasp, make homemadedrumsticks too. Chopsticks are ideal, but wrapped pencilswill do just fine. Use some cotton or tissue paper and wadit around the ends of the sticks, then wrap it up in maskingtape. Show your baby how to tap the drumsticks on boththe tops and sides of the drums. Pretty soon you'll haveyour own rhythm section going.

Pour and Fill

• Fill a dishpan with dry rice. In the dishpan putspoons, small pitchers, measuring cups, etc.Show the child how he can pour rice into thecontainers. Pour the rice out, and let him fillup the containers.

• Let child play with the rice and containers in

his own way.

• Put a large beach ball in a pillowcase. Handthe bag from a doorway or tree branch at thetoddler’s eye level.

• Show her how to use her arms and hands topunch the bag. Talk about how the bagswings.

Climb Every Cushion

• As toddler learns to walk, she'll set her sights onclimbing. This is a fun way to help her develop her

gross motor skills.

Skills developed: gross motorWhat you'll need: lots of pillows from the bed, sofa,and elsewhere

Pile up a stack of pillows for a safe, fun climbingactivity.

• Use stable pillows, such as couch cushions andbed pillows, on the bottom, then add chair pillows,throw pillows, and so on.

• Holding toddler’s hand, help her climb up themountain of pillows and stand triumphant on top. Ifyou have a lot of rectangular pillows, you can usethem to create more of a stair-step structure, butyou'll need to hold toddler's hand to make sure shedoesn't step off the top tier into thin air.

Safety note: Never leave a toddler alone with herpillow mountain; this activity should be supervisedconstantly. And move any furniture with sharpcorners, so there's nothing for her to bang against ifshe falls.

Sink or Float(File Folder Game)

Print up the 3 sheets onto white card stock. Place the Floatand Sink sheets inside a file folder. (Directions below).

Trim float and sink cards. Laminate. Find the objects on thecards. Have a small container of water. Ask children if theitems will float or sink. Place the item in the water. If itsinks, place the card on the sink page. If it floats, place thecard on the float page. (Example – rock will sink – place

rock card on sink page).

Have fun with the kids while they make predictions.

Note: Using double sided tape, place the sink or float sheets inside a filefolder. Place a self laminating sheet or clear contact paper over the sheet.Trim.

Winter Pajamas and Robes

When it’s cold in winter, pajamas and robes provide

warmth at night. Fill a dress up box with nighttime clothes

that keep people warm. Preschoolers will enjoy dressing

up in warm winter wear such as flannel pajamas and robes

for dramatic play. As well, children can dress up dolls in

winter pajamas, robes and blankets to keep the dolls warm

in the winter. A fun book to spark interest in wearing pajamas is Pajama

Time by Sandra Boynton [Workman Publishing Company,

2000]. Near the end of a preschool winter unit, teachers

can plan a pajama day and ask children to wear their

winter pajamas to school.

Monday Advance Preparation

• Locate the book you would like to use for the weekduring circle time. Theme related and something ageappropriate. You can check the book list included withthis theme.

• Stick with one book for the week.

• Ahead of time print up the wall charts for the letter S,color white, number 6, and the shape circle. Decide ifyou’re going to use color or B & W. If using B & W,color them ahead of time. Hang the wall charts in theplayroom or around your circle area.

• Purchase any necessary ingredients for cooking orsnack activities you wish to do during the week.

• Print up worksheets you will need for the day.

• Make sure to have all craft materials on hand for any

projects you will be doing this week.

• Have a large dry eraser board or large sheet of paper. Havethe children do an interactive morning message. Until thechildren get use to this, you say and write it each day. Agood example is:

Daily Message:

Good morning boys and girls. Today is ____________.Today we’re learning about winter. Love (your name)

Once the children get use to interactive writing, you can askthem to help you write the message. Ask them what youshould write. If they say Good morning, ask them what doesGood start what, and let a child come up and write the letterG. As the child is writing the G, on your smaller dry eraserboard, show the children and have them practice writing G onthe floor or in the air.

Have the children write several letters, and then togetherusing a pointer stick read the daily message together. Counttogether how many letters they wrote. (Use 2 different color

dry eraser markers. One color for the children and one colorfor your writing so they have a visual of the letters they wrote).
