Lessons Learnt / Difficulties faced
19. (i) JIM & WS has to strive hard to train its athletes through out the year to
make them at par with other athletes of the country.
(ii) The participating team should practice hard before any such events /
competitions to perform even better in the coming years.
(iii) The team should be provided with best recent available equipment to train
with and clothing necessary for such events.
(iv) A dedicated team coach with athletes should practice hard to make JIM &
WS visible and shining at National / International Winter Games.
(v) Manually beated slopes at Solang were found difficult and at times
hazardous by many of the athletes.
Recommendations
20. Based on the experience gained during these events, following
recommendations are proposed:-
(a) JIM & WS should form a dedicated team for participating in winter Games
and they should be provided with quality alpine / Nordic equipment and clothing.
(b) JIM & WS shall be helped by state tourism Deptt. to build T – Bar lift at
Aru and Baisaran near Pahalgam which may cum up as future destination.
(c) Such competitions shall be conducted at a place where suitable slopes
as well as cross country tracks are available. Solang, Manali (H.P) though a
fair place equipped with rope way, it lacks proper slope as well as Nordic Cross
Country track which at some time become hazardous due to difficult snow
conditions and exposed mud patches.
(d) At Solang, Manali (H.P) the slopes are beated manually by hired
manpower which does not give good results and the athletes find it difficult to
perform on such slopes. Hence a snow beater machine may be made available
to make the slopes suitable for such events or some other destinations e.g
Gulmarg –J&K and Auli (H.P) may be given a try.
12
(e) The cross country track, as found by JIM & WS team as well as by High
Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) is not suitable having inadequate length and
lacking technical aspects. Hence it is suggested that the Nordic events may be
better conducted at Gulmarg- J & K.
Conclusion
21. JIM & WS participated for the first time in an event like Alpine Premier League &
Gulmarg Global Derby 2012 with less personnel experience and equipment, the
athletes in a great feat of chivalry exerting their all skill, knowledge and experience
performed fairly well bagging one Gold & two silver medals in two different events. This
has given the team a good startup to look forward and take a giant leap in the field of
winter Games, all they need is the support of state Government in regard of their
equipment and training facilities. This proves the fact that the team has been successful
in attaining the proposed aim to a greater extend.
