It would be possible to suggest many different factors that have lifted the Panther Boys Rugbyprogram to the lofty heights of an OFSAA Silver Medal. However hard work on the part of thecoaches and players over the past several years have created both an attitude and now record ofsuccess. A model of "how to turn things around" it was only a few years ago RND was unable tofield a Senior Boys team to compete in a full KASSAA season.

In a remarkable exhibit of rugby RND fought to the end of a 25 - 15 final versus the BrantfordCollegiate Mustangs. RND scored early on a fine run by Tyler Ling finished off by Nick Carriere totake a 5 - 0 advantage. BCI countered with two trys and the Panthers boys defended their goalinewith determination against a couple of other attacks. Down 10 - 5 RND regrouped and took over thetempo early in the second half as the Panthers again swung the ball wide and around the defencefor a score that tied the contest. However BCI almost immediately countered with a try and began tocarry more of the play. The Regi boys fought hard to the end with Rhys Davies scoring another try on a BCI group that had not allowed asingle point at OFSAA before their match with RND.In the end an initially dejected group of Panthers began to slowly grasp their accomplishment. A second place standing in the Province ofOntario and the mark of the most decorated Rugby team RND has fielded in school history.Congratulations.

OFSAA - Palooza for RND 06.05.13

Boys Rugby:The boys won Game One 31 - 14 versus St. Peter's of Ottawa. Tyler Ling scored 2 trys, while Rhys Davies, AidenTamasauskas and Nick Carriere added one try each with a Carriere made three converts. In Game Two, Thursday at 11:30 the Panthersdefeated Saltfleet from Hamilton 12- 0. This moves RND into an important game at 3:45 with the possibility of playing for an OFSAAmedal in the balance. Game Three saw the Rugby squad keep their streak going with a 13 - 5 victory over Medway of London. The Gold Medal Game is 1:00 at Twin Elms Rugby Park in Ottawa.Keep checking the championship web site - Click Here

Panthers AreChampions 05.23.13FINALLY!! After a 30 year drought, the Regi Senior boys brought homethe KASSA championship with a 19 –5 win over Lasalle. The game was a contrast in styles,Lasalle wanted to play a tight forwarddominated game and pound theirlarge forwards at Regi with ruck afterruck. The Panthers wanted to movethe ball around the full width of thefield and take advantage of Regi'sspeed and skill. The first half wasvery tight with Regi playing into thewind. The Panthers played most ofthe first half on the Lasalle side of thefield and managed to lead 7-5 at thehalf time whistle on a try by Nic Taylor and a convert by Nick Carriere. During the team discussion at half time it was unanimouslydecided that Regi would make every effort to spin the ball to the full width of the field in the 2nd half. This strategy paid off as Regimanaged 2 trys out wide by Harris McEachern and Connor Plumpton, with another convert by Nick Carriere. At the final whistle the joyand relief was evident on the faces of all the players, coaches and parents. Preparations will start next week for OFSSA which is on June4-7 in Ottawa, where we will also be watching Canada play Fiji on the evening of the 5th. Well Done boys, all those days in the rain havepaid off!

'Let's win this for Amos'By Doug Graham, Kingston Whig-StandardThursday, May 23, 2013 10:02:03 EDT PM

Playing with their hearts filled with determination, the Regiopolis-Notre Dame Panthers capped an undefeated Kingston Area senior boysrugby season with a 19-5 win over the La Salle Black Knights Thursday at Nixon Field before 200 fans. The Panthers have won eight times in the high school season, responding to coach Bob Amos to play winning rugby while he dealt withwhat he termed "a tough year as a staff member." "I had a baby born April 17. A couple days later my son was diagnosed with Down syndrome. I have been sort of out of commission for alittle bit," Amos said. "I think they really rallied behind that and played their hearts out for my family and my boy. They absolutely broughteverything today."Team captain Rhys Davies talked about how the players were motivated by the Amos family situation. "He told us he wanted us to winand that's what got us through every game," Davies said. "Before every game we said, 'Let's win this for Amos'. So we were happy wecould do that for him and we expect to do more of the same at OFSAA."The Panthers, with a striking running game, led 7-5 at the half and then put the game away with tries by Harris McEachern and ConnorPlumpton. Nic Taylor had the first try for Regi and two of the scores were converted by Nick Carriere. La Salle's try came from DennisMaster on a plunge. Head coach Reuben Brunet said the Panthers wore his team down with their speed. "They are very skilled. Theybrought the wide game with their skilled guys and we broke down a few times," Brunet said. Both Davies and Amos said the key to the victory was the Panthers finally got to their game plan. "We spin the ball wide, we use ourbacks. That is our strategy. (In the second half) when we spun the ball that's what gave us the win," Davies said. "We are a very athletic, fast team. After 40 minutes of that pounding ground game (La Salle) got tired and we still had legs. We put a few scores on the board,"said Amos, adding that the experience of losing 5-0 to Frontenac in the final last year was also a motivation for the Panthers.

"I told them experience is what you get when you don't get what you want," Amos said. "Last year we got experience and we came veryhungry for this final."The Regi victory also ends a long drought for the school, which in the early years of KASSAA rugby won four times over a five-year span.Regi was the first senior boys champion in 1979 and took its fourth title in 1983. The fifth one came Thursday, 30 years later. "When yousee the banners in our gym, rugby was the one banner lacking going back 30 years," Amos said. "It has been a while since we had ayear posted on a banner so now we got one for 2013. So it is a big year for us and we are pumped to be going off to OFSAA."The provincial championship will be played June 5-7 at Twin Elm Rugby Park in Ottawa.La Salle will move on to the Eastern Ontario AA championship in Prescott Monday. The Knights will play against South Grenville with thewinner moving to OFSAA, also in Ottawa, June 5-7.

Both teams handled the conditions well and the result was anentertaining game with many exciting plays by both teams, culminating in a 19 - 0 RND victory. The Regi forwards lead by TysenEnglish,JM Noel and Gage Dunleavy ensured that the Panthers had plenty of quality attacking ball to use. RND High Scorers: Tries--Nick Taylor, Rhys Davies, Nick Zanet. Exhibition Game to Start the Season 04.04.13Today marked the beginning of the 2013 rugby season and the senior boys started off with a convincing victory in their exhibition matchover St. Peter's CHS from Orleans, ON. The rugby boys were clearly motivated in play with burning memories still lingering from theresults of last years finals. Out with a serious chip on their shoulders and hunger for success, the boys performed exceptionally well intheir first match. The forward pack was incredibly mobile and efficient winning most competition for the ball in the rucks. The back row ofPlumpton, Tobin, and Tamasauskas will be a serious handful for all teams this season. Their tenacious play helped RND control the flowof the game. When the ball was won and moved out to the backs, Rhys Davies showed off his elite level play, making the opponents lookfoolish on many occasions. Tries were scored by: Rhys Davies (2), Tyler Ling, JM Noel, Conner Plumpton, Jared Ordorico, and several converts were made by FredScott Nick Carriere and Jared Ordorico. Best of luck to the boys on Tuesday for their KC tournament at Queen's West Campus field.
