We are also partnering with BeFrienders Ministries to expand the spiritual care resources in the Augustana communities. Volunteers will provide active listening and unconditional support to those navigating difficult times and decisions. Augustana Care staff is currently working with BeFriender Ministries’ national director to create materials specifically geared to residents’ needs. In May 2011, individuals from across our campuses will be trained to become BeFriender leaders. If you are interested in learning more about the BeFriender program and possibly becoming a BeFriender leader for the Regent, please see me. Ultimately, the program will increase the impact of spiritual care in support of the following goals: Moderate feelings of anxiety, hopelessness and isolation Give residents and families support so they can feel more equipped to deal with illness and loss Offer residents and families meaningful expression of their faith traditions and religions To enhance our long-term capacity to offer spiritual care, Augustana Care will need donor support and will launch a fundraising drive in the months ahead. Your contributions will benefit the program’s success. As we look forward to another year together may we be mindful of the countless gifts we have already received and not take them for granted. To all of you who volunteer your time, talent and treasure to the residents and families here at Augustana Regent, I want to express my deepest thanks. I would also like to thank the residents and families for this opportunity to serve them in the coming year. Vicki M. Another year has come and gone and a new one is about to begin. I hope this New Year brings you Joy, Peace and Good Health. Christmas time is a wonderful time to reconnect with family and friends and give thanks for the many blessings we receive each year.

Thanks to the many volunteers, residents, families and staff for your continued dedication to the residents of Augustana Regent and your assistance with the Holiday Tree Festival. We

exceeded our fundraising goal this year by raising over $16,000. The funds raised will be dedicated to a landscaping project in front of the building as well as the covered patio area which will allow the residents to enjoy the great outdoors. Please join me in thanking the various tree sponsors, silent auction donors and in kind donators who helped make this year’s event a success. Thank you for your support!

Beginning in 2011, Augustana Care is seeking to unite with congregations, businesses and other key leaders in the community to advance our mission. We are establishing Mission Advancement Councils (MAC) at each of our sites to help us serve God in local communities through our services to older adults and others in need. The councils will be a place for dialogue and information exchange between local leaders and the leadership of Augustana. This includes information about the needs and opportunities in local communities/congregations for services and the resources Augustana Care has for education and service. We hope to prioritize needs for seniors in the community and enhance the understanding of support for older adults. The MAC will identify opportunities for volunteers from the community to increase quality of life for older adults. We are looking to host our first meeting in early January. If you are interested or know someone you feel would be a good candidate to serve on our MAC, I would love to hear from you.

Since Augustana’s early days, spirituality has been an integral part of daily life. Over the past few years, I have had the opportunity to work with others across the Augustana system to look at expanding the spiritual focus of Augustana. As a result, new standards of spiritual care have been implemented and a plan to expand spiritual care resources developed.

Ultimately, the program will increase the impact of spiritual care in support of the following goals:

Moderate feelings of anxiety, hopelessness and isolation Give residents and families support so they can feel more equipped to deal with illness and

loss Offer residents and families meaningful expression of their faith traditions and religions

To enhance our long-term capacity to offer spiritual care, Augustana Care will need donor support and will launch a fundraising drive in the months ahead. Your contributions will benefit the program’s success.

As we look forward to another year together may we be mindful of the countless gifts we have already received and not take them for granted. GET INVOLVED IN 2011!

For 2011, the Activity Department is focusing on organizing opportunities for residents to make a difference in the community by volunteering. There will be volunteer projects both within the building and out in the community at large.

Our first volunteer encounter is scheduled for January 7th at Prince of Peace daycare where we will be assisting by washing and sanitizing toys for the children.

Watch the calendar for other events in the coming months and remember... You are never too old too make a difference! Kristyn Rupp, Activities Director

Lights...Camera...Action!!

You may have noticed that Augustana Regent has been in the limelight lately! In November, two video shoots took place. The first one involved several residents and family volunteers who will appear in a Comcast TV commercial for the Regent. Our building is a beautiful location in which to

live and we wanted to show that off to the community. The commercial will air in early January on various cable stations. The second shoot was a bit more elaborate and involved real actors as well as volunteers. Augustana Care Corporation conducts annual training system wide for all of its employees. The new video will demonstrate customer service techniques that our staff will implement everyday. It was fun to be a part of the creative process by staging the activities that are a natural part of our daily life here. Take after take, the professional camera crew finally got what they wanted to produce a high quality video. Many thanks to all of those who were involved in the process!

A Dietitian’s Perspective on the New Year’s Resolution

The New Year always inspires a “resolution” and diet and exercise usually top the list. Many people buy books or research the latest fad diet or buy a gym membership. But instead of making unreachable goals, start with simple things to make yourself feel good that you know you can achieve. When it comes to eating, use the phrase “healthy eating” instead of “dieting”. Healthy eating is a lifestyle, not a quick fix! Here are some simple healthy eating tips that can improve the way you feel: Eat a variety of foods including whole grains, fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy products and lean protein foods. Go easy on foods that have a lot of fat, sugar or salt because they are usually high in calories and low in healthy nutrients. Try to eat slowly and stop eating when you feel full. It takes 20-30 minutes for your stomach to signal your brain that you are full. Try to eat meals at regular times. If you skip meals, you may tend to overeat or indulge in too many snacks. Control your portion sizes. A vegetable or fruit serving should be ½ cup and a serving of meat

should be 3 ounces which is the size of a deck of cards. A serving of milk is 8ounces or 1 cup. Besides making better food choices, be active. You can lower your risk of disease by being moderately active for 30 minutes daily at least 5 days a week and you don’t have to do all 30 minutes at once. Break the activity up into 10 minute intervals if that is more obtainable. You can increase your activity level without even knowing it by house cleaning, swimming, walking, and gardening or by taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Any healthy change whether with food or exercise is a step in the right direction. Making simple changes can improve your health, mobility and promote weight loss. Remember, being healthy doesn’t need to be complicated. Keep it simple and your New Year’s Resolution can be achieved!

Happy New Year!

As we reflect on the year past, we want to let you know how much we appreciate your involvement at Augustana Care.

We have been fortunate to receive generous philanthropic support this past year. A total of more than $537,000 was donated to Augustana Care. These gifts, large and small, made an huge difference to our ability to

pursue our mission to foster fullness of life for older adults.

As in past years, we received a number of memorial and tribute gifts, as well as generous bequests and estate gifts. These gifts speak volumes about our donors’ commitment to our mission. In fiscal year 2010, we also received more than $73,000 in grants that helped to enhance quality of life for our residents through programs and services.

Thanks to the generosity of our auxiliaries and volunteers, we received donations at many of our campuses that have purchased items such as new chapel sound systems, therapy equipment, and resident holiday gifts. Our employees were generous last year too, donating nearly $40,000 through our employee giving.

These are some of the ways that the spirit of giving has benefited our residents over the past year. Thank you for being part of the Augustana Care family and for your commitment to older adults!

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT Luella Brucciani Luella Brucciani was born on July 26th 1919 to Arthur and Earnestine Bachman. She was the second of four children, two boys and two girls. The family lived on Lyndale Avenue in the south Minneapolis area known as Richfield. When Luella was only 12 years old, her mother died suddenly while on a trip to California and her father raised the family as a single dad. Earnestine was only forty-one. Luella’s family was very tightly knit and they lived close to one another. When her grandfather needed help in his prolific gardens, the children all helped. He turned his passion into a prosperous business, Bachman’s Florist, that has been open for 125 years at the same location and is now operated by the fourth generation of the family. Luella grew up in the family home and she graduated from Washburn High School. She and her cousins worked regularly in the greenhouse keeping things tidy, taking orders and making floral displays. Luella knew John Brucciani at Washburn and he worked at the neighborhood drug store. She stated that she “pestered him” until he finally asked her out and the couple married in 1939. John became a Minneapolis police officer in the traffic and accident division. They resided in Luella’s family home for a while then built a house just up the street on Lyndale. John and Luella had two children, Michael and Sheila. John served as a police officer for over 28 years and when he retired, he and Luella built a lakeside home in St. Michael, MN where he could enjoy hunting and fishing. John had a big garden and grew wonderful tomatoes that Luella canned for the winter months. They lived in St. Michael for 30 years. Sheila eventually married Tom Cochran and built a house near her parents where they raised two children. Michael and his wife, Beverly, had three children. They reside on Crystal Lake nearby in Burnsville. .Luella has five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. After John passed away, the kids helped Luella find a place to live where she could enjoy a relaxed lifestyle and meet new friends. They chose Augustana Regent where she could have a beautiful lake view like the one she enjoyed in St. Michael. Luella admits it took time to adjust to apartment living but after two years she loves it. Both of her kids still call her every morning and her granddaughter visits regularly. Luella is blessed with what matters to her most, a loving family. Laura O’Gara

Senior Moments by Laura O’Gara

If you are like me, there are piles of “stuff” around your living space!

Bills go in one pile, unread magazines in another, and half-finished

projects await your attention. When January rolls around, my

recurring resolution is to plow through the “stuff” and de-clutter. How about you?

There is good reason to do so. Experts tell us that clutter is a hindrance to a fulfilling

existence. Constant reminders that we have unfinished business drags us down and

stifles our creativity. I have watched enough “how to get organized” TV shows to know

that purging helps us to regain our focus but I always struggle with tossing anything I

might need someday! My personal clutter challenge is knitting supplies, my craft of

choice. Although I have plenty of yarn and patterns to last a lifetime, I can’t seem to

get going.

We tend to surround ourselves with much more than we need or can use. Why do

you think we do that? Maybe we find security in ownership or there is some

deep-seated fear of loss. Whatever it is, we can avoid frustration by taking baby steps

toward attainable goals.

So in 2011, I’m going to finish that sweater I started and make the second sock to

complete the pair before I begin anything else! I will organize the pattern books and

mark the best ones. Once everything is in its place, I’ll have a whole year to accumulate

a new stack of “stuff” to put away next January! Can you relate? Oh well...

Happy New Year & God Bless!

5 Easy Tips to De-cluttering! 1. Schedule a de-cluttering afternoon twice a week. 2. Designate one spot for incoming papers and trash junk mail immediately. 3. Pick up 5 things and find a place to store them. Then 5 more... 4. Use the “1-in, 2-out” rule. For every new item, get rid of 2 old ones. 5. Clear out your medicine cabinet and throw out expired products.
