Dear Members,Wow! What an amazing 12 months it has been. It was a record-breaking

year for many of our programs and once again, the energy, support, enthusiasm and ruach (spirit) of our members has kept our J thriving. As we close one year and look forward to another, let’s take a look back at some of the things that made 2014 such a special year for the Mandel JCC.

Bragging rights are most certainly in order, as The J was named “Best Fitness Center” for a third year in a row by Cleveland Magazine Circle East Live Well readers. Playmakers Youth Theatre was also honored as “Best Theater/Dance Instruction.” Readers of Macaroni Kids East, an online website for family activities, voted The J “Best Family Friendly Gym”, “Best Summer Camp” and “Best Day Care.” And this past August, 14 teen athletes proudly represented Cleveland at this year’s JCC Maccabi Games in Cherry Hill, NJ. Team Cleveland’s basketball team brought home the bronze and swimmer Max Gustafson won 16 medals – 14 of them gold!

J-Day Camps continued to grow, with a record 775 kids taking part in everything from canoeing to archery to the ever-popular Maccabiah Games competition. But we’re not resting on our laurels – we have many new, exciting changes planned for 2015 (see page 15).

Our award-winning overnight camp, Camp Wise, had another amazing summer. Nearly 700 kids found community through rock climbing, pottery, drama, sports, swimming and camper-led Shabbat services. Registration is in full swing for the 2015 summer. For those who may be new to overnight camping, please contact our Camp Wise staff to learn more (see pages 16-17).

The Cleveland Jewish FilmFest, now in its 8th year, welcomed more than 5,000 movie goers to theatres to see 26 outstanding international Jewish films, making it far and away the most successful FilmFest to date. Likewise, the newly renamed Cleveland Jewish Book Festival brought a throng of highly-acclaimed authors to Cleveland, including literary superstars Jonathan, Faye and Jesse Kellerman.

Whether by taking a group fitness class, swimming laps, lifting weights, Spinning, running on the track or treadmill, working under the guidance of a certified personal trainer, or competing in a game of Pickleball, we are inspired, everyday, by seeing so many of our members taking steps to feel better, grow stronger and get healthier.

We have many wonderful new programs and activities planned for you in the coming months and hope to see you often at The J. In closing, thank you again for your support and membership and for making The J what it is today – a welcoming, strong, vibrant and dynamic community center.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season and New Year.

aide and treated him as they would any other camper. He quickly made friends and when his camp mates expressed a desire to learn ASL, the staff started a class. Eli was just one of 23 kids who were able to attend J-Day Camps with the assistance of a one-on-one aide. We truly appreciate The J’s ability to allow kids like Eli to participate in camp; he’s had two unforgettable summers and is already looking forward to next summer.

Our family is so grateful to the supporters of the Mandel JCC Annual Fund for making Eli’s summer camp experiences possible. We will be contributing to this year’s campaign and hope that you will, too.

Why We’re Supporting the Mandel JCC Annual Fund Campaign – Laurie & Richard Silver

Our son Eli is nine years old and has special needs. He uses a reverse walker and his primary language is American Sign Language (ASL). We were hopeful that Eli could have that same wonderful Mandel JCC camp experience as our older boys. And that’s exactly what happened.

The J’s Day Camp staff was fully on-board from the beginning. They readily accommodated Eli’s need for a one-on-one

A Taste of MussarNina Piken Yarus and Mark Davidson, facilitatorsIn Mussar we seek to “make the heart understand what the mind knows.” Mussar practice leads us on a path of personal spiritual transformation to refine our character traits (middot), and then our actions accordingly. In this class, we will experience a taste of Mussar practice by focusing on three of the middot, through text study, conversation with study partner (chevruta), and meditation, we will explore middot together.

Are We Ready to Be Free? How Will We Know When We Are? Preparing Spiritually for the Passover SeasonRabbi Rex PerlmeterWhat are our preconceptions that prevent us from being free? Using mindfulness, Mussar text and meditation-based practice, we will recognize the things that hold us back from seeing all the choices we have and the limitations on our freedom.

The morning will focus on the intellectual and textual understanding of the theme. In the afternoon, we will use our creative energies to produce a “staff of freedom” which we will fashion out of wood to reflect what we have learned and thought about during the day. This staff can be used as a support and reminder for our preparations and for a meaningful Pesach experience. All materials will be provided.

Playmakers Youth TheatreCleveland Jewish Book Festival

Playmakers is a dynamic youth theatre program, under the direction of the talented Sheri Gross, that welcomes children of all levels of talent in grades 2 – 12.

The Playmakers’ 2014-2015 season celebrates the classic Broadway shows that set the stage for theatre as we know it today. We started our journey in the early 1940’s with the farcical comedy Arsenic and Old Lace. We continue through time with the 1950’s classic musicals Peter Pan and The Sound of Music. The season ends with a musical extravaganza highlighting the ever-evolving music of the 1960’s with Beehive: The Musical.

PLAYMAKERS 2014-2015 SEASONCelebrating the ClassicsPeter PanPeter Pan is the story of a boy who would not grow up. He visits the Darling children and takes them on a magical adventure to Never-Never Land in this beloved musical version of the classic J.M. Barrie play. This story exemplifies the power and excitement of imagination and fantasy.Show dates: December 4 – 14 • Fairmount Temple

The Sound of Music (Open to grades 2-9)The Sound of Music, with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Many songs from this musical have become classic songs representing the best of American Musical Theatre. Auditions: January 4 • 2 pm – 6 pm • Mandel JCC

Beehive: The Musical (Open to grades 8-12)Beehive: The Musical takes us on a musical journey through one of the most provocative decades of our time. Audiences are treated to a multi-media historical account of the music explosion of the 60’s with songs ranging from bubble gum pop with “It’s My Party,” to hits from the British Invasion like “Downtown” to a Janice Joplin Rock medley. 60’s costumes are encouraged for the audience, and intermission hosts contests and an onstage dance party.Auditions: Sunday, Feb. 8 • 6:30 pm • Mandel JCC
