4TH AND 5TH GRADE: OLYMPIC ENGINEERING

Standards: S4P3. Students will demonstrate the

relationship between the application of a force and the

resulting change in position and motion on an object.

MGSE.5.MD.2 Represent and interpret data. MGSE4.MD.5

Geometric Measurement: understand concepts of angle

and measure angles.

EQ: Can you design and create a downhill skier that can

stand freely and glide done a given track?

Hook: Ms. Bettes’ example.

Resource: https://www.olympic.org/pyeongchang-

2018

Materials: aluminum foil, craft sticks, tape,

scissors, pencils, boards for tracks, rulers

Lesson: Students will collaborate to design and

create a downhill skier to navigate a given track.

Criteria:

1. Collaborate with a partner to draw out the skier on the

foil

2. Cut out the skier and slowly scrunch to prevent the foil

from tearing

3. Tape the skier’s feet to the craft sticks

4. Measure your skier and record the data on the challenge

sheet

5. Race your skier down the slopes

6. Improve if necessary

Differentiation:

• Step by step instructions on the board

• Students can work independently

• Design an Olympic Mascot if finish early

2ND AND 3RD GRADE: OLYMPIC ENGINEERING

Standards: MGSE3.MD.3 Represent and interpret data.

MGSE2.MD.1,2,3 Measure and estimate lengths in standard units.

S2P2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to explain

the effect of a force (a push or a pull) in the movement of an object

(changes in speed and direction).

EQ: Can you design and create a bobsled that can

compete in the bobsled challenge?

Hook: Ms. Bettes’ example…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIn9vmzWWSE

Resource: https://www.olympic.org/pyeongchang-2018

Materials: cardboard tubes, straws, tape, scissors,

crayons, snap cubes for rides, boards for track, rulers

Lesson: Students will collaborate to design and create a

bobsled to compete in the bobsled challenge. Each

bobsled must hold two or four riders.

Criteria:

1. Collaborate with a partner to design and create a

bobsled to hold two or four riders

2. Cut an opening on one side of the tube making certain

not to cut through the tube

3. Tape two straws to the bottom of the bobsled for runners

4. Decorate your bobsled to show your Olympic pride

5. Build two or four riders from snap cubes to fit inside the

bobsled

6. Design a slope for the bobsled to travel down

7. Measure the distance your bobsled travels and record on

your challenge sheet

8. Improve your bobsled if needed

1ST GRADE AND KINDERGARTEN: OLYMPIC ENGINEERING

Standards: SKP2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to

compare and describe different types of motion. MGSEK.MD.1,2 Describe and

compare measurable attributes. MGSE1.MD.4 Represent and interpret data.

EQ: Can you design and create a luge for one

rider to travel down a given track?

Hook: Ms. Bettes’ example and read aloud of “Lucy

Tries Luge” by Lisa Bowes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAdbt8pDZis

Resource:

https://www.olympic.org/pyeongchang-2018

Materials: craft sticks, wooden clothes pins, tape,

pipe cleaners/chenille stems, crayons, scissors,

rulers

Lesson: Students will design and create a luge for

one rider to travel down a given track.

Criteria:

1. Design and create a luge using one craft stick

2. Tape two pieces of pipe cleaner to the craft stick and bend

them to look like runners

3. Color/decorate your rider and luge, then tape them together

so the rider is on top of the luge

4. Measure how far your luge travels down the provided track

5. Improve your luge if needed

Differentiation:

• Students can work collaboratively with a partner

• Step by step instructions on the board

• Design an Olympic Mascot if finish early
