The rush is on to fi nish construction of the new Stafford Elementary school. Work crews and EISD custodial staff will be working feverishly right through the holidays in order to get everything ready. The school is set to open in mid January!

A tour of the new campus, with Executive Project Manager Henry Acosta, shows the construction crews busy at work opening hundreds of boxes with new school furniture.

“If everything falls into place,” says Acosta,” we should be ready to bring the kids in by the target date in mid January. “The only thing we can’t control is the rain, and if that starts up, it might slow things down a bit”, he added.

The new campus will be a real treat for the students. The school is brightly colored with

tile and is shaped like a large “L”. The library is located at the entrance of the building. At the end of the left wing is the gymnasium and at the end of the right wing is the cafeteria.

Outside, work crews are putting in the landscaping. They are planting turf grass, fl ower beds and trees.

All 600 Stafford students will make the big switch to the new campus soon after the holidays.

The fi rst semester of the school year is rapidly coming to a close. It seems that the school year started only yesterday! We began the school year celebrating last year’s academic successes. The district and our campuses earned a total of 27 Gold Performance Awards. These awards are earned based on signifi cant improvement in reading, math, science and writing. Congratulations to all of the schools earning this prestigious award. We also celebrated Mrs. Giancarla Herrera being recognized as a Hero for Children by the State Board of Education. Mrs. Herrera has been a volunteer in the Edgewood schools for over forty years. Currently, Mrs. Herrera serves as a volunteer for Las Palmas Elementary. Thank you, Mrs. Herrera for being our hero.

While the start of school may seem like it happened just yesterday, the district has made great strides during the fi rst semester. Construction on the new Stafford Elementary and new Cenizo Park Elementary is on the fast track. Both schools will open next semester with Stafford Elementary slated to open in January. The new Cenizo Park Elementary will open after Spring Break. Additionally, construction on the Brentwood physical education facilities and the Hoelscher parking lot will also be completed next semester.

Our partnership with the City of San Antonio, Family Services Association, and Catholic Charities to continue the Making Connections efforts is also underway. Loma Park, L. B. Johnson, and Roosevelt Elementary schools are collaborating with our partners to address the needs of the families

New School Board Takes Shape Congratulations are in order

to the new members of the EISD Board of Trustees. In the November 4th elections, four seats on the school board were up for election. Some seats will be seeing some familiar faces.

Returning to the board is Ms. Tina Morales, who is familiar to many. She was previously a member of the board from 1986 to 1998. Ms. Morales has a life long interest in Edgewood, having begun as a PTA member in 1979. Ms. Morales is the fi rst woman to serve as the president of the school board. She currently works as a parent liaison at Lanier High school.

New to the board is Mr. Marcelo Montemayor. Mr. Montemayor is a graduate of Edgewood High School. He has been an attorney for many years. His interest in education began when he was a math teacher at Kennedy High School.

Two other seats that were up for election saw the incumbents return to their positions. This

includes Ms. Marisol Martinez and Mr. Johnny Perez.

On December 16th the new board gathered to elect offi cers. Estefana C. Martinez will serve as president of the board for the upcoming year. Marcelo Montemayor will serve as vice-president and Tina Morales will serve as secretary.

In January, the entire state of Texas will be observing Texas School Board Recognition Month, to honor these citizens who give so much of their time to public education.

Pictured are Marisol F. Martinez, Johnny Perez, and newly elected Tina Morales and Marcelo Montemayor.

they serve. Families from these campuses have been involved in focus groups to discuss their needs in the areas of work and earnings, asset development, and early childhood education. The goal is to develop a model of family engagement that results in student achievement and to replicate the model at all of the district’s campuses.

The Curriculum and Instruction staff has also been working diligently with the campus leadership to improve the instructional program. Next semester, the district’s on-line curriculum management system will be launched. This system will allow the staff to access the district curriculum, TEKS, course descriptions, and sample lessons in an integrated on-line format. The C & I staff also introduced a three-tier model to facilitate providing both academic and non-academic services to students based on their individual needs. Finally, the staff is developing frameworks in the core areas for Response to Intervention (RtI) to assist teachers to provide

differentiated instruction for students who cannot master the TEKS using the regular curriculum. New long awaited band instruments have begun to arrive at the secondary campuses. This along with the re-opening of the district’s Fine Arts Theatre will boost our fi ne arts program.

On the non-instructional side of the house, district staff continues to work with the Long Range Planning Committee to develop a plan for replacing or renovating the district’s facilities. The committee includes district staff, parents and community members. They will have recommendations to present to our Board of Trustees next semester.

Much work has been accomplished in a short time! These accomplishments stem from everyone’s willingness to work together by sharing ideas and experiences. Our hard work, time and efforts will translate to success this year. Thank you for all that you do for the children and the Edgewood community. Let’s continue working together.

program at Gus Garcia Middle School were in furious competition. The grand prize was a brand new Nintendo Wii game console!

About 15 students played an afternoon of Mario Super Slugger. The tournament was developed as part of a national campaign. The Nintendo company provided the All Star program with a new game console for every school it participates in. Local program coordinators held the competition to determine a winner.

At the end of competition was Ramiro Nava, Jr. who won the right to take the game home in a very close Finals match. The Finals game was so exciting, that All Star program presented a second game unit for the runner up. Mrs. Particia Karam, Executive Director of San Antonio - All Stars, was on hand to see the spirited competition.

After School - All Stars provides comprehensive after school programs that are fun for kids and also keeps them safe. The program helps improve kids lives by nurturing their minds, bodies and spirits through programs that incorporate independent learning, academics and enrichment activities.

It serves 70,000 youths through after school and summer programs in 13 cities across the country.

Her school attendance record has been stunning for over 40 years, yet she is not a student or district employee…she is a volunteer. The state of Texas now knows what we at Edgewood have known for many years… Giancarla Herrera is a very special woman.

Mrs. Herrera has been a volunteer for Edgewood Schools for over 40 years. During that time she has helped with the crossing guards fi rst thing in the morning, assisted during cafeteria hours, collected attendance records and scores of other duties that she provided to the school district. She is now our most distinguished volunteer.

Mrs. Herrera is the recipient of one of the highest awards from the Texas Board of Education for her more than 40 years of dedication to the children in the Edgewood School District. She is now known as a “Hero for Texas Children”.

At a school program at Las Palmas Elementary, friends and fans of Mrs. Herrera gathered on Dec. 8th to celebrate her award and her contributions to Edgewood.

Mr. Eliseo Rodriguez, Principal of Las Palmas, presented all the students of the school where each class presented awards and posters congratulating

Mrs. Herrera. The “stars of the show” was the 2nd grade class of Mrs. Garza. Her students danced to a “ranchera” song entitled, “ La mochila azul”.

Earlier in the year, Mrs. Herrera was invited to Austin to a meeting of the State Board of Education where she was presented her award, along with 14 others, for their work on behalf of Texas children.

The State Board of Education established the Heroes for Children award program in 1994. It is designed to “recognize the many outstanding volunteers whose efforts represent signifi cant contributions to public school education in Texas.” EISD Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Garza and several administrators made the trip to Austin to be there to cheer for Mrs. Herrera. Also in attendance was her daughter, her grandson and his wife, and her great granddaughters.

At Las Palmas, TV reporter Deborah Knapp was on hand to videotape the event and interview Mrs. Herrera. The story appeared on KENS TV at 6 pm on December 8th.

Mrs. Mary Hernandez, one of the many teachers whose lives have been touch by Mrs. Herrera, was on hand for the presentation. Mrs. Hernandez remembered how she fi rst met Mrs. Herrera, many years ago. “In my fi rst few days as a teacher, Mrs. Herrera was there to guide me and encourage me. I am now retired from teaching, and she is still there, going strong! She truly is an amazing woman.”

Every morning, students from Las Palmas are greeted with hugs from Mrs. Herrera. Millions of hugs later, we are all still amazed at the service to our school children by just one woman.

Over 100 students were treated to a Holiday Party with snacks, music and gifts from Santa. The gifts were contributed to the campus Police Department during the year by alumni and students. The offi cers visited six different locations in the neighborhood to spread some Holiday cheer. Nancy Reed, President of CIS-San Antonio and Molly Gomez, Communities in Schools caseworker, were on hand to host the festivities.

We all know that schools have libraries, but how does a parent learn about everything available in that library?

The best way is to attend a Parent Academy.

In December, over 50 Edgewood parents attended a series of seminars at the Hoelscher Center, showing them many of the programs they can take advantage of here at Edgewood.

The Parent Academy was put together by the Bilingual Education and Special Education departments as a way of keeping parents informed about the opportunities the schools provide.

There are so many programs available at Edgewood today, that it seems, the hardest part is helping the parents to pick and choose.

There were a handful of parents who had never attended a meeting like this. They were greeted by Emma Mungia who explained how the parents would be able to observe simple lessons on many subjects.

Parents could sit in on a class in “dual language”, also known as “doble sendero”. This new program

Edgewood Class of ‘67 delivers food baskets to locals

Members of the Edgewood High School Class of 1967 deliver food baskets to families in need for the holidays.

Class members load vehicles with food items for distribution to local families. Fifteen families received food baskets for Thanksgiving.

The Edgewood HS Class of ‘67 has never forgotten where they came from. Although they have moved on, their hearts still linger in Edgewood and its community. Each year members return and play a part in contributing to the needs of the students and families in

the Edgewood community. Since 1987, the Class of ‘67 has

provided food baskets for families in need in the Edgewood community. The food baskets are distributed during the Thanksgiving Holiday and the Winter Holidays. In addition, they provide

a Christmas Party for 15 families in a designated campus. Food, music and gifts are provided along with a visit from Santa Claus for the children.

Last year, the group awarded ten $1,000 scholarships to students from Edgewood schools.

Each year is different depending on the success of their annual fundraisers.

It’s been over twenty years since members returned to Edgewood and donated the Veterans Memorial monument now permanently placed at the Frank Mata Stadium entrance.

T o d a y , they continue a tradition to co-s p o n s o r w i t h E d g e w o o d ISD, the annual Memorial Day Ceremony held i n M a y. T h e event a t t rac ts over 300 family and community members to the

will be expanding into several new elementary schools. It is an elected class in which the parents choose to put the child in an accelerated program that teaches English and Spanish in the primary grades.

This was an opportunity for parents who are confused or concerned about the program to see how it actually works.

“AVID” is another program which allows students to select a study path that is more suited to their study speed and geared toward career development.

Parent Educators were on hand to connect with any parent who may have concerns about their students or the schools. The parent educators are there to provide guidance to get any questions answered or provide resources to ensure a students success.

The most important message from the Parent Academy is that Edgewood wants to help families put together the best program for their student. Keeping the parents involved in education is one way to insure that a student will be successful, not only in a classroom but in life as well.
