ROUNDHOUSE VISION & MISSIONIn September 1996, the Roundhouse Advisory Committee, composed of neighbourhood represen-tatives, heritage supporters, members of the arts community and Park Board staff , undertook a retreat to work through a vision for the Roundhouse. The following is the result of those discussions:

The overall mission is to celebrate diversity... of people, values, ideas and activities.

This mission is made up of three key elements:

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS PROJECTAll of us who work or play or socialize at the Roundhouse will be active participants in an evolving project to fi nd new and creative ways to integrate the arts, community, culture and sports.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS OASISThe Roundhouse is located in the centre of one of the largest urban experiments in history, trans-forming a few hundred acres of mostly vacant lots into one of North America’s densest and most diverse urban sites. The Roundhouse will be an oasis in the centre of this dynamic mix, enabling people to use their creativity and energy (at whatever level) to rejuvenate themselves and to be better equipped to face a blizzard of challenges and opportunities around them.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS CONNECTIONThe Roundhouse exists to identify and serve the needs of widely divergent communities. To do this the Roundhouse must reach out to the places and situations where those communities feel comfortable. These relationships will grow into Roundhouse programs through sponsorships, part-nerships, and our own productions.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

In these cool, damp days of winter, it’s especially important to stay active with physical and cultural activities, to keep our bodies and minds engaged. The Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre has many diff erent and unique opportunities to do so, and we hope you’ll take full advantage of them.

We have some fun and interesting off erings in our recreation programs. Get a hip-swinging workout with Hoop Dance, or try our Wood Turning course, a new addition to our popular Woodworking Studio series. There’s also a new pottery instructor in the house: Hand and Wheel with Kate. And, we’re very pleased to off er an ESL for Adults class – a safe yet fun way to improve conversational English.

A few upcoming highlights from our arts partners include:

• The PuSh International Performing Arts Festival from January 18-28• The Talking Stick Festival from February 14-25, including a celebration of Powwow culture on

February 24• The Vancouver International Dance Festival from March 7-25

A big thank you from Roundhouse staff to our incredible volunteer team of 200 who have volun-teered 4,000 hours in 2017! These dedicated community members perform duties such as usher-ing shows in the Performance Centre, assisting children with arts & crafts, leading tai chi, and so much more. The Roundhouse would not be the success it is without our volunteers.

Finally, we’re thrilled to announce that our Performance Centre theatre renovation is complete. We now have 200 very comfortable and cushy seats on an automatically retractable seating system. As well, we have brand new lights and sound equipment, and a much wider and automatically retractable projection screen. We are most grateful for the fi nancial support we received from the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, the BC Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Collaborative Spaces Program, the City of Vancouver Cultural Infrastructure Grant, the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, and from various generous corporate and individual sponsors via our Park Your Caboose Seat Fundraiser campaign.

Best regards,

Andrew DiltsPresident, Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Society

Park YourCaboose

After 20 years of heavy use, and an average of 135 performances a year, the Roundhouse has replaced its seating and upgraded a range of technical equipment in its theatre. Many people, particularly Roundhouse staff and Board of Directors, contributed to the planning, fundraising and execution of this wonderful change!

MAIN IMPROVEMENTSMid-August to mid-October, 2017 saw the most exciting change, especially for those of us who enjoy comfort – the instal-lation of a retractable seating system that boasts really cushy seats for our audiences to park their cabooses. We’ve also expanded a bit – moving from 175 to 200 seats. Technical enhancements include new stage lighting and an upgraded sound system, as well as a large, retractable projection screen. The technician's booth has moved behind the audience, improving sight lines for audiences, artists, and technicians.

PARKING THEIR CABOOSES WITH STYLEThrough government, corporate and individual sources, the Roundhouse raised over $250,000, and we are very grateful to all the groups and individuals who helped us along the way. Their support for our infrastructure renovations exhibits a healthy commitment to maintaining local per-formance spaces with a strong community focus.

In October, we hosted receptions to introduce our supporters to the new space. After a few words of welcome, the audience delighted in a dem-onstration of the seating system and technical elements, and was able to ask our technical staff in-depth questions about the changes.

PLEASE JOIN US We're so pleased to welcome you to the refurbished Performance Centre, and hope you will fi nd an opportunity to park your own caboose in a new seats very soon!

Heading into our third year of this campaign, we believe it’s more important than ever to engage in conversation and renew our commitment to tolerance and the respect for diversity.

Four free events are planned across the Lower Mainland, including our signature wrap-up event at the Roundhouse, to include speeches, cultural performances and activities for families. We invite everyone to come and celebrate Holi and put a colourful handprint on our anti-racism tableau.
