The 40th Annual Virginia State Champion Auctioneer Contest was held Octo-ber 5th at the Virginia State Fair. Congratulations to Daniel Lanier, our 2017 Virginia State Champion Auctioneer! I would like to extend a big thank you to our contest committee, contestants, sponsors and the Virginia State Fair for making the contest such a wonderful event. Our 2018 Annual Convention is just around the corner and this year we will be celebrating our 60th Anniversary. The Annual Convention will be held at the Hilton Richmond Hotel & Spa/Short Pump, January 12-14, 2018. Please help spread the word to your fellow auctioneers as we hope to make this a memorable event. We would love to see members that we haven’t seen in a while! Some highlights for this Convention are: • Awards Banquet • Fun’d Auction • New this year: Ringman’s Contest! • Rookie Contest Please look for registration forms in this magazine and the VAA website for the contests and convention. If you have items to donate for the Fun’d Auction, please contact Cody Manspile, chairman of the Fun’d Auction committee. The VAA has the honor of hosting the NAA Designation Class Auction Marketing Management (AMM) January 9-11, 2018 at the Hilton Richmond Hotel & Spa/Short Pump, Richmond, VA. A professional designation awarded by the NAA Edu-cation Institute to help professional auctioneers understand today’s marketing, both technology-based and traditional. To attain the AMM designation, auctioneer-scholars are required to complete 24 classroom hours, complete a custom auction summary report based on knowledge from the designation course, and 24 hours of continuing education every three years. Please check the VAA website for the registration link through the National Auctioneers Association. As the holiday season is now upon us, please let me be one of the first to wish you and your families a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season. I hope to see many of you at the Convention in January! As always, if I can be of service to you, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or (703) 401-7085 if I can be of any assistance.

Ike Swart, VAA President

The Importance of Displaying Your VAA & NAA Affiliation

Less than a month ago I received a call from a prospective client about selling the remainder of their unsold items after a estate sale. At first, I was not sure if we were the right fit for their needs, yet after several additional conversations, an appointment was set with the seller. After a lengthy discussion and review of the remaining items, a sold receipt copy from a well known estate sale company was presented. The list simp-ly listed a dollar amount per sold item and the seller asked if I could “interpret” the list since it was missing any sort of item description or break-down. The seller went on further to share details about missing items, items being tagged and sold far below their potential values and the lack of insurance by the vendor when they tried to file a claim. After taking the time to discuss our role as auctioneers and the many layers

of expertise which we provide to

tive bidding platform (via live or online auctions), code of ethics, target-ed marketing strategies, sell through rate and most important our state li-censing requirements, it became clear to the seller the significant difference between estate sale companies and auctioneers. At that moment I realized how im-portant it is that we as association members proudly display the VAA & NAA logos on our website, print mate-rial, contracts and other areas to further educate the public and professionals (attorneys, bankers, insurance agents) about the many additional steps which we take as professionals to become licensed auctioneers. What a great time it is to register for the AMM, Auction Marketing Man-agement course on January 9-11, 2018 during the VAA January conference

and show event. I am looking forward to taking the course for the third time as it has provided priceless knowledge and techniques for marketing our busi-ness & conducting successful auction events. I would like to wish you and your fam-ily a wonderful holiday season and the very best for 2018!

“Be Yourself, But Don’t Limit Yourself”

I can’t wait until the second week of January! WHY? - I get to see many of my friends in the industry and I’m sure I will make many new ones as well. - I get to refuel my brain by attending the AMM class and listening to the many great speakers that will present at our convention. We, as humans, have to nourish our bodies with food, exercise, sleep and so forth. I feel we need to feed our brains on a regular basis to flourish in our given field. Of course it needs to be the proper food and fortunately, for us, we have a healthy dose available this January. This phrase “Be yourself, but don’t limit yourself” (From the Summer VAA Magazine) made me reflect on how my membership in the VAA helped me and our company grow and evolve in the auction profession. Early on in my auction career, I let my pride and ego get in the way of doing what we do best as an industry, helping people. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one that has, and/or, still does this. Let me explain. In my opinion, we should always have options to handle our cli-ents problem and typically that is what we do — problem solve. However, we cannot be knowledgeable in all asset classes. We should have a go to person or company for as many potential situ-

ations or asset classes that there are. Many of us, most will not admit it, have had times when we had the trust of the client, they liked us and our company and would like to do business with us. But, at the end of the day, someone else got the deal. Why? The answer to this question is typically be-cause they felt as if the other company was more experienced in marketing the particular asset class. In my experi-ence, it’s usually never about the cost. It would have benefited the seller and you if you would have referred this business to someone better experienced in the field. This applies across the board whether it’s a comic book, coin collection, equipment of any type or real estate. We should position our-selves to be more specialty based and become experts in the particular field of choice (personal property, equip-ment, real estate etc.). I believe this alone would raise the bar on how our industry is perceived. The last thing any of us should take the chance on is not getting the results for our clients that we should. Work towards being the go to person in your area for any situation, be prepared to have someone that can handle whatever your client’s needs are. Always remember to ask your client if there is anything else you may be able to help with and mention some of the things you are able to han-dle through your associated companies. You would be amazed at the additional opportunities that arise.

This can apply across the board wheth-er you are a contract, online only, ben-efit auctioneer, if you are new to the business or a seasoned professional. Everyone you know should know that you are an auctioneer and that you can help solve an array of problems. Build your group of go to folks so that you can always be in the position to help. With that all said, there is no better place than our annual convention to do this through your brothers and sisters in the VAA, all the while gaining great knowledge or getting a refresher of the things you already know. I would also encourage anyone who is active in the our industry to look into taking the Auction Marketing Manager class in January. I guarantee the information provided in this NAA designation class will have a positive effect on your business! I look forward to seeing everyone at the convention! Tony Wilson

• Real Estate Auction • Ballroom/Charity Auction • Commercial/Industrial Auction • Farm or Farm-Related Auction • Antiques and Collectibles Auc-

tion • Specialty Auction

• General Household and Estate

Liquidation • Close-up of bidder(s) excited

(2) All photographs must be in color. (3) Contestants may enter as many

photographs as they like, but only one will be declared as winner.

(4) 5"x7" prints are the desired entry

size. Other sizes will be accepted, but may be rejected because of the inability to determine composition quality of smaller photographs.

(5) Photos are to be no more than

three years old. (6) Entrants into the VAA Photo

Contest realize that all photographs be-come the property of the Virginia Auc-tioneers Association.

(7) Photographs that contain company logos, names, etc. as part of the background will be accepted but are not encouraged. Judges will be asked to select entries that do not contain logos, etc. unless a particular entry is the best by a wide margin.

(9) The statement regarding pub-

lication rights on the entry form must be signed.

(10) Failure to comply with any of the

rules will cause the entry to be judged ineli-gible for the Photo Contest.

Signed Waivers Needed Two types of signed waivers are needed with entries. First: Members must sign a waiver of publication rights with each entry. This waiver is on the entry form on the following page. The entry will be disqualified if the waiver is not signed.

Second: When a person is the focus of a photograph, a waiver has to be obtained from that person. For example, a waiver will ordinarily not be needed with a crowd shot. However, if a photograph only has a couple of people in it, or if one person is obviously the focus of the photograph, a waiver must be signed. The waiver should read:

PHOTO SUBJECT WAIVER

I hereby give my permission for my likeness in the attached photograph to be used in publications of the Vir-ginia Auctioneers Association and waive any claim I might otherwise assert on the basis of such use for inva-sions of privacy, defamation or any other claim based on such use.
