Taking care of yourself as a parent— Are you stressed?

Sometimes it seems like the demands and stresses of parenting just keep building up! But

there are things you can do to get life back under control.

• Think about what makes you feel stressed each day. If you lower these everyday stresses, it will be

easier to deal calmly with your children. It will also make it easier to cope with those unexpected

things, like illness.

• For some parents it just seems like there is too much to do each day. You might need to make

some changes to your lifestyle. Talk to your partner about ways to change your routine or share

the workload.

• Call on friends and family you trust if you want some extra help. Everyone needs a little support

now and then so there's no reason to feel guilty about asking them to mind the kids or to have a

coffee with you.

• For other parents, the hour after everyone comes home from school and work is the most stressful

part of the day. Put a good routine in place where each person knows what they need to do. This

will help your evenings to run smoothly.

• Finally, you should always take some time for yourself to relax or do something you enjoy. Even 30

minutes a day can be enough to help you feel refreshed. Regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle

help too. Triple P's Five Steps to Positive Parenting

"Take care of yourself as a parent" is one of Triple P's

Five steps to positive parenting.

From a board game to the board room, problem solving is a skill that can get you

through many tricky situations in life. So how can you teach your kids to become

good problem solvers?

Children need to practice their problem-solving skills. The starting point can be everyday play.

Here, they are surrounded with chances to problem solve, whether they're playing an

imaginary game with their toys, building with blocks, or colouring. It's the perfect time for

them to show you what they know and what they can do.

It also gives you the chance to prompt them towards a solution and to praise their efforts.

For example, your child might be working on a puzzle. They ask for your help finding a

missing piece. Instead of just handing them the piece, you could prompt them to find the

answer themselves. You could say something like, "What size piece are you looking for? What

colour?" and guide them towards the answer.

This not only teaches them about the steps of problem solving, it sends them the message

that problems have solutions. And they will realize that they are able to find those solutions.

Growing up in an environment like this will help kids become confident enough to tackle

problems in the future.

Ages and Stages Questionnaires- Why screening matters?

Screening celebrates milestones in our children

We offer the Ages and Stages Questionnaire for parents to use, to give themselves a ’ snapshot’

of their child’s development. The questionnaire will only take 10– 15 minutes and is available in

English or Spanish. The ASQ can be completed right at the play group, at home or over the

phone. If you wish to access an ASQ or an ASQ-SE, please ask a staff member to help you.

Once you receive the appropriate simple questionnaire, you will

notice a series of specific questions related to your child’s

development. The developmental areas will include:

Fine Motor Communication Personal-social

Problem Solving Gross Motor

Ages and Stages questionnaires are available for age range of 1– 66 months.

The Ages and Stages Questionnaire-SE offers parents a ’snapshot of their child’s development in the Social Emotional area.

The developmental areas on the ASQ-Se will include:

Self–regulation Compliance Social Communication

Adaptive functioning Autonomy Affect

Interaction with people

Ages and Stages Social Emotional questionnaires are available

for age range of 1– 72 months

Please ask an FRC staff for one at any time, in the centre or at a rural group.

Healthy Breakfast Recipes– www.leannebrown.com

Omlette

4 eggs

2 tbsp fresh dill, finely chopped

salt and pepper butter for the pan

1 shallot or ½ small red onion, finely diced

¼ cup grated cheese

Crack the eggs in a bowl. Add the dill, salt, pepper, and beat with a fork.

Put a big saucepan on medium-high heat. Melt a small blob of butter in the pan. Once the butter is sizzling, add the onion and sauté for about two minutes, until it’s translucent and smells great. Add the egg to the hot pan and swirl it around to coat the surface evenly. If the center of the omelette cooks more quickly than the edge, use a spatula to pull any raw egg into the middle. Then stop touching it. After about 30 seconds, toss the cheese on top along with any other raw or cooked vegetable you feel like adding. Once none of the egg remains translucent, fold the omelette in half with your spatula, then lift it out of the pan. You don’t want any brown on your eggs. If I’m serving two people, I usually cut one large omelette in half rather than making two omelettes. However, when you feel like being fancy, you can make a pair of two-egg omelettes simply by using half the ingredients for each. Add: ham, tomatoes, mushrooms to change it up a bit.

Oatmeal

1 cup rolled oats

2 cups water

¼ tsp salt

In a small pot, add the oats, water and salt. Place it on medium-high heat, just until the water comes to a boil. Immediately turn the heat to low and place a lid on the pot. Cook for 5 minutes, until the oats are soft and tender and most of the water has cooked off. You can add more water if you like your oat-meal smooth and thin, or use slightly less if you want a thick oatmeal. Whether it’s milky and sweet or savory and salty, I’m sure you can find a favorite way to enjoy a hot bowl of oats in the morning!

Add: berries, apples and cinnamon, for different flavors.
