A note from your Chronicler:

This edition is our winter newsletter. I hope that you find some interesting things in it. I have edited and updated the officers and guilds of Illiton, due to many errors; I hope I now have them accurate. In fixing my computer this past weekend I was able to find some “lost” files so the Locmorow MOAS article that has been lost over a year, has now been found and is included here.

I shared a picture on the cover of Mike Pozar’s art. I wanted to keep his memory alive. I will try to include some of his contributions over the years in the next few editions.

I am now the Regional deputy Chronicler; I will be taking over as Regional Chronicler in May. Because of this, I am looking for a replacement as the baronial Chronicler. If you are interested in this officer’s position or would like to learn more about the job please feel free to contact me at my email: [email protected].

A reminder to all: articles, art work, poems, recipes, projects, pictures, and event reviews are needed for this newsletter. Please submit something this year.

Our Spring event is scheduled for April 11th. It takes all of us to put on a successful event. If you have not volunteered at a local event yet take this opportunity to do so. We will have sign up sheets for jobs that need assistance.

Thank you, Lady Muriel

Greetings to all from Lochmorrow’s MoAS! This time I will give a few ideas of activities to keep kids (and adults) entertained on those ‘yuck’ days. Zofia Pyotrowska MoAS Lochmorrow

Homemade Butter

This is easy and fun. It can be done with each person making their own or everyone working together on one jar.

You will need:

Heavy cream, a clean jar with a tight fitting lid, a clean marble

Here’s how it’s done:

Pour cream (room temperature turns into butter much quicker) into jar filling it between half and two-thirds full. Place marble into jar and put on lid tightly. Shake jar briskly until butter forms; this takes about 20 minutes. Drain off excess liquid and store butter in fridge. Once butter starts to form, liquid becomes very thick and sludge-like, a little salt or herbs can be added for different tastes. Food coloring can be added to make colored butter; do this at the beginning.

Stained Glass Windows

These can also be made into other shapes by cutting different shapes out of the paper frames or made as sun catchers by leaving off the paper frame and cutting out a shape.

You will need:

2 pieces of black construction paper or cardstock, waxed paper, crayon shavings, glue, scissors, an iron, parchment paper.

Here’s how it’s done:

Make crayon shavings by ‘peeling’ crayons with a vegetable peeler. The amount you will need will depend on the size and number of windows you are making.

Cut a window shape out of each piece of black paper making sure that the openings line up. Tear off 2 pieces of waxed paper that are larger than the opening in the black paper, but are smaller than the black paper. Tear off 2 pieces of parchment paper that are bigger than the waxed paper. Place one piece of waxed paper onto one piece of parchment paper. Cover the waxed paper with crayon shavings; place other piece of waxed paper on top of crayon shavings; place other piece of parchment paper on top of waxed paper. Iron with a hot iron until crayon shavings are melted; set off to the side to cool. To assemble window on one piece of black paper glue around opening and outer edge of frame; place cooled waxed paper piece on top of frame; glue around opening on the waxed paper and place other black paper frame on top, make sure that openings line up. When glue has dried hang in a sunny window.

Egg Paint

This does require some things that are not usually found around the house so some planning is needed.

You will need:

Egg yolks, toothpicks, water, small bowl, dry paint pigment, small paint pots or other containers to mix paint in

Here’s how it’s done:

Place one yolk in a small bowl, pierce with a toothpick, add 1 teaspoon of water and mix well. Place a small amount of pigment in each paint pot. Add an equal amount of yolk mixture and mix well. Add additional water until paint is the consistency that you want.

A few tips for this project:

The yolk will affect the color of the paint.

This paint cannot be used with acrylic paints or on surfaces that have been treated with any acrylic medium.

This paint will spoil; dispose of leftover paint after finished using.

The dry pigment should be handled by adult or older children with close supervision.

I hope that these activities give you some inspiration for keeping occupied on those yuck days.

Origin of the Shadow Crown

Many years ago, in the greatest of all the kingdoms, The Midrealm, there lived a mighty King and Queen. They wore wondrous garb, and have many heroic knights in the kingdom for safety, but the greatest of their possessions were their Dragon Crowns. The fact of the matter was that the Crown itself had no great power, but it was a gift from the mightiest of the dragon lords – Flue. Before his Majesty had even had dreams of being the king, he had been hunting many years before, and found Flue trapped in a Tar pit, and was able to rescue him. In return for services given, Flue presented the king with the Dragon Crowns, and assured the king that with these crowns and the creation of a flag honoring the dragon, his kingdom would be safe from the ravages of dragons and any magic that dragons would cast. The soon to be king, never shared this information with anyone, except his Queen-to be.

On one cold night, a lowly serf crept into the castle and stole the King’s crown, while their majesties slept. Now this serf was unaware of the Crown’s glorious history, and he believed it to be magical and of great value. Placing the crown on his own head, the serf climbed up into the mountains to escape the hunters he knew would be after him. As he climbed higher and higher on this mountain he began to notice smoke rising from holes in the ground, and occasionally a gentle rumbling beneath his feet. Now, as he approached the apex of the mountain, he looked over a crack in the mountainside and beheld a marvelous sight. Inside the crevasse, flowed a shining river of reddish gold, and lying on a ledge, almost in the river was a giant green egg. He had never heard of such a thing in his life. Just then, a loud WHOOSH occurred over head. The serf looked up, but saw nothing. Again, he looked down and began to plan how to get at the tremendous egg. As he leaned farther over, for a better look, a giant wet, foul smelling, sticky black goo fell from above. Now when he looked up, he saw the dragon, Flue. Not knowing anything about dragons, since he lived in a kingdom safe from such beasts, he knew nothing of dragon poop and the properties therein. Forgetting about the egg, he ran down the mountain to the nearest waterfall to remove the nasty excrement in which he was covered. As he stood beneath the water, the water mixed with the dragon poo and turned to acid. His clothing began to smoke, and his skin turned to char until nothing remained but the blackened crown.

The next day, the heroic knights approached the area, and found the crown lying on the shore, but now it was blackened beyond repair, as we see it now. The crown was returned to the distraught king, who promptly named this the Shadow Crown and it was set aside for all to see. A new crown was delivered to the king in the exact likeness of the old crown. You see, dragons are very smart, and Flue knew that it was not the king wearing the crown on the mountain. The Kingdom still stays safe today, as long as the monarchs wear their Dragon Crowns and fly the Dragon Flag.

The moral children is, always watch your surroundings, and if Flue shits – wear it.
