Welcome to our autumn newsletter.

The summer seems to have flown by in a flurry of exciting events and fundraising fun for Poole Hospital Charity.

There are so many uplifting stories from individuals and teams that have chosen to support us. We have included as many as we can and hope you will enjoy reading

them, and are inspired to join in the fun and to feel good, helping others.

This year’s Festival of Running was the best yet, raising more than £12,000 for the Dorset Cancer Centre at Poole Hospital. This great event was closely followed by our annual Dragon Boat Race, in which 18 teams paddled against each other for

fun and glory. Take a look at the pictures on pages 10 and 11.

It only seems like yesterday we were thinking of Christmas and here it is almost upon us again. We have a selection of ways to support us this Christmas including

our annual prize draw with the chance to win £200. Our 2014 calendar of local scenes features winning photo’s from a photography competition run by Lilliput ward. These images have been used to soften the hospital environment for our

elderly patients.

Finally thank you so much to everyone who has given their time and energy to support Poole Hospital Charity, and enjoy this edition of our newsletter!

Welcome to the first newsletter from Poole Hospital Charity. Your donations and support help us to make a difference to patient care at Poole Hospital by improving the hospital environment and purchasing state-of-the-art equipment.

Poole Hospital Charity supports all the wards and departments across the hospital. Money can be donated to a specific ward or department through the charity or paid into the hospital’s main fund which is used to support equipment

or projects that have been identified as a priority.

Our inspirational fundraisers have been busy again taking part in and organising all kinds of wonderful and challenging events to raise funds for their chosen ward or department.

Raffle for Valentine’s DayHazel Watts from Barclays Bank in Broadstone held a Valentine’s raffle to raise funds for our critical care unit following the excellent care they gave to one of their friends recently. The raffle raised £1,602.

Laura and Graham Smith’s daughter Megan was born 13 weeks early, at 27 weeks, and spent time on the neonatal intensive care unit. The couple and their family were moved to raise funds for the unit in recognition of the outstanding care Megan received. Laura said: “Megan has endured so many complications and hurdles and has fought them every step of the way. “Our little girl has gone from strength to strength thanks to the fantastic neonatal staff who looked after her round the clock and who fought to save her life every single day. “No words or actions will ever be able to

express the gratitude that Graham and I have for these wonderful people.” Graham together with Laura’s dad, Mark Brown, climbed ten Munro mountains in Scotland over a period of five days in June. Their fundraising was supported by Laura’s aunt Val Chappell, who organised a dinner dance and by Laura’s Mum, Elaine, who hosted a masquerade ball. The family have raised an incredible

£10,000 for the unit.

Marathon effort for Kevin

As well as supporting our newsletter, Lesley Simmons from Digital Storm and 14 friends enjoyed the challenge

of a lifetime cycling from Tower Bridge to Bruges in Belgium. Highlights included numerous punctures, a fall and cycling in the dark through the quiet towns of northern France. Lesley said: “We loved every minute of the experience and raised more than £2,100”.

After being looked after on the children’s unit recently, Bethany Young, 14-year-old student at Glenmoor School and her friend Daniella Usher decided to cycle 50 laps of Slades Farm cycle track in June. They raised £420 which was used to purchase a saturation monitor for the children’s unit.

Schoolgirls Samantha Milton and Isabel and Charlotte Turner, both nine, made and sold pink heart shaped soaps raising £300 to purchase breast gowns for radiotherapy patients in the Dorset Cancer Centre. The girls came up with the idea themselves and did a fantastic job selling the soaps throughout Poole, in the hospital and at their

school St Mary’s Primary School in Poole.

As a thank you for the wonderful care provided to his father on our critical care unit recently, Kevin Owers ran the Bath Half Marathon completing the run in 2hrs 34 minutes and raising £1,500 in sponsorship.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported this year’s Poole Festival of Running whether you ran, sponsored or just came along to cheer the runners on. Around 350 runners took part in the Dorset Cancer Centre 5k Run for Cancer including a team from the Dorset Cancer Centre. The event raised a staggering £12,000.Special thanks go to 11 year-olds Luca Bayne and Paige Derbyshire who ran the 1.5 mile race twice as they were too young to take part in the 5k. They both have family members being treated at the Dorset Cancer Centre and wanted to show their support. Luca raised more than £1,700. Paige raised an amazing

Parkstone Grammar School pupils, Erin Thorne, Hannah Ferguson, Grace Skinner, Serena O’Connor and Heidi Cole raised £180 for Dignity in Dementia as part of the young enterprise challenge. The team was given a £10 note at the start of May and had to make as much money with it as possible by the end of the month. A great result!

The children’s unit and elderly wards were delighted to receive donations of Easter eggs from Bournemouth’s Virgin Money Shop, Addeco Recruitment and Seddon Property Services while the Southampton branch of the New Forest Harley Davidson Owners Club delivered toys to the children’s unit.

£82 and ran on one of the hottest days of the year in a monkey ‘onesie.’Thank you also to Poole Runners and the Borough of Poole for organising such a brilliant event and the event sponsors, Marsden Flooring, Everyone Active and the Daily Echo.

Continuing their support for various wards at Poole Hospital, this year’s Oak Motorcycle Rally raised £817 for ear, nose and throat and physiotherapy patients. More than 100 bikers took part in the rally riding out from Milborne St Andrew in June.

Kate Dukes, president of the Poole branch of Soroptomist International, a women’s organisation with a focus on education, nominated the Dorset Cancer Centre as their charity for 2012 raising £1,000 through a range of events throughout the year. Their donation will support specialist training for our oncology nurses.

To mark her 40th birthday Karen Townley decided to take part in the Zest Challenge – an assault course-style run - along with friends and colleagues Tanya Richardson, Kerry Watson, Jade Bissagar and Nadine Bleach all from LV=. Karen said: “It was more challenging than we thought with a lot of hills and uneven terrain but we all really enjoyed it and it was a great team effort. We are so pleased we have exceeded our fundraising target thank you so much.” The women

Grandfather Peter Moffatt, 67, walked the 630 mile south west coast path from Minehead to Poole in July and August raising more than £1,500 for the Dorset Cancer Centre. Peter said: “I have had two knee replacements and suffer from emphysema and I felt I would like to donate my spare time to help others and thank those who have helped me and my family. “This was a huge challenge for me and I nearly gave up several times but managed to reach Poole after eight weeks and am thrilled to have made it.” Well done Peter!

In March last year, retired midwife Joy Marston fell ill and was admitted to the critical care unit at Poole Hospital. Joy’s husband, Tony, and daughter, Sharon, spent many anxious hours waiting in the family room before Joy was well enough to leave after several weeks.It was during this time that Sharon, a paediatric nurse specialist, decided she could help make a difference to other families in their position by providing a more homely, warmer environment for families awaiting news of their loved one, and set out to raise funds to give the room a makeover.A hugely successful fashion show in October 2012 kicked proceedings off, raising £1,900.

Sharon’s attention then turned to how the room would feel and, working with staff on the unit, talked to students at Bournemouth and Poole College about providing artwork which would lighten and brighten the room.The result was a series of unique pieces reflecting the local area, and which were presented by the students to Sharon, Joy and Eoin Scott, matron on the critical care unit, earlier this year.Sharon said: “I just wanted to make a difference for people going through that experience.“It’s good to have something to distract you in an anxious situation and we hope the artwork will do this” she said.Eoin said: “The students came up with some fantastic artwork which will make a huge difference to relatives using the room in the future.“It’s such a simple idea but Sharon’s drive and enthusiasm made it happen.”Christmas cards of the main window design will be on sale in November with a percentage from each sale donated to the critical care unit.

Staff from One Stop, BNY Mellon and Poole Hospital took part in an exhilarating abseil down the cliffs at Dancing Ledge on the Dorset coast in April raising more than £6,000.

Dignity in Dementia, a pioneering project that supports hospital patients with dementia, was one of the chosen charities for this year’s Harry Paye Day on Poole Quay. Thank you to the Pirates of Poole for organising another swashbuckler of a day. The day raised £1,800 for PHC.

This breathtaking nine day 500km ride encompasses traditional Costa Rican farmlands, bustling colonial cities, stunning mountain ranges, smouldering volcanoes and tropical Caribbean lowlands. The ride is open to anyone over 18 years of age, all you need is a sense of adventure and the desire to raise funds for your chosen ward or department at Poole Hospital. If you fancy a cycling adventure why not join our team: Dubbed the ‘pedalling priest’, Father Mark Skelton, parish priest of St Mary’s Church in Poole, has decided to celebrate 25 years of priesthood by taking part in the challenge and will be raising funds for Dignity in Dementia, which supports patients in hospital suffering with dementia.

Joining Mark will be Penny Jarvis, health information facilitator, and Amanda Colman, head of patient experience, both at Poole Hospital. Penny is continuing her quest to cycle the world and completed the Vietnam Cycle in 2012. This will be Amanda’s first charity challenge, she said: “I had been thinking about taking on a fundraising challenge for some time and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. I thought it’s now or never and signed up.”

Critical care matron, Eoin Scott, is taking part in the 6633 Ultra, a non-stop self-sufficient 350 mile race in the Arctic Circle. Eoin said: “I will be expected to pull all my provisions - food, cooking items, clothing, sleeping kit and other safety gear on a sled.”Eoin is hoping to raise enough money through sponsorship to buy a specialist critical care bed costing around £11,000.

Follow in the tyre tracks of Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome for this stunning cycle between two of Europe’s capital cities - 300 miles over four days which will take you through the beautiful Kent countryside before crossing the Channel and continuing through the rolling, green fields of northern France, finishing with a spectacular ride up the Champs Elysees the day before the final of the Tour de France. The next day you will be in Paris to take in all the atmosphere of the final stage of the Tour de France.Among those signed up to take part so far are Stella Campbell, trainee consultant radiographer, Judith Baker, senior radiographer from the Dorset Breast Screening Unit and Victoria Williams,

senior paediatric physiotherapist from the Child Development Centre.Stella said: “Coming to a breast screening unit can be a worrying and stressful time for many women and raising extra funds mean we can provide the extra things we would like to improve the experience our patients have.“I thought this cycle challenge sounded like just the right opportunity for me.”

As part of Virgin Money Shops ‘five million pennies’ campaign, which supports local charities, Gemma Baker, Rachael Stacey, Leroy White, Danielle Blewer and Michele Gleeson from the Bournemouth store aim to raise more than £600 for the children’s unit by holding a variety of events.

Staff from BNY Mellon have been busy supporting the Dorset Cancer Centre, organising a quiz night, testing their heads for heights in our coastal

abseil challenge, volunteering at and running in the Poole Festival of Running as well as paddling in the Dragon Boat Race. Business analyst, Andrew Lewis, and a team 18 friends and colleagues,

organised a 24 hour, 230 mile cycle relay challenge from Lands End to Poole in memory of their friend and colleague Zoe Gooch. They completed the challenge in 24 hours and 43 minutes raising a fantastic £2,600.

The Co-operative Community Fund kindly donated £2,000 towards a sound wall for the children’s unit. The sound wall provides a therapeutic, engaging and interactive sound, light and motion space for the children.

Staff from 15 One Stop convenience stores between Lymington and Weymouth have been very busy over the summer raising more than £6,000 for the children’s unit in just over two months. Staff held a range of events including fun days, in-store collections and took part in the coastal abseil in April. Hannah Elton, children’s unit manager, said: “We are extremely fortunate to have such fantastic support from within the local community. “We are always overwhelmed by people’s generosity and kindness, and to have raised £6,000 in 10 weeks is an amazing achievement. “The funds will go towards the purchase of a new Optiflow device that will deliver high concentrations of oxygen for children in our high dependency unit.”Tim Josephs, head of community for One Stop, said: “One Stop is very proud to be supporting local families from the local communities in Dorset and Hampshire. “Our staff and customers are really working together, focusing on their communities and local needs.”

Inflammatory arthritis is a very painful condition that affects more than three per cent of the population, both children and adults. Ultrasound lets us see if there is any inflammation in peoples’ joints, it is very accurate and helps us formulate a treatment plan for our patients. Ultrasound can also help us to make the diagnosis earlier and to monitor response to treatments.We currently have one ultrasound machine kindly funded by donations. A second machine would let us scan more people, enable us to train specialist nurses and a more up to date machine would improve the quality of scans and treatment.An ultrasound machine costs from around £25,000.

A paediatric scope allows our ear, nose and throat consultants to examine the nasal passages and throats of neonates or young infants and children and is less painful and traumatic. Currently an adult scope is used. A paediatric nasendoscope costs £10,000.

The innovative Multicare bed enhances the treatment of critical care patients by assisting in the prevention of pulmonary and respiratory complications and supporting a range of therapeutic and diagnostic procedures such as in-bed x-ray and scanning, patient weighing and pressure area care. The Multicare bed costs £11,000.
