Scarlets banking on JV stars becoming solid Varsity contributors

West head coach Dianne Johns led the Scarlets to an 11-15 record last season, and is confident her team has what it takes to finish above .500 in the Big Nine this time around.

JOEY DENTONstaff writer This season is going to be a highly-anticipated season for the Mankato West Scarlets girl’s basketball team. Even though last season was a somewhat-successful season for them, this season’s squad has a lot of ques-tions to answer. Head coach Dianne Johns thought last season could have been better, but she is excited about this upcoming season. “We were hoping for an above .500 season, but fell a little short of that goal,” Johns said. Last season, the Scarlets finished with a 11-15 overall record and an 8-10 Big Nine conference record. This season they are going to have to look to other go-to players on the offensive end, as last season’s top scorers have all graduated. Emily Doyle aver-aged 11 points per game, while Jessica Makela averaged 10.4

points per game. Losing seniors is always tough for high school teams, and it is going to be no different for the Scarlets this season. After losing their two top scorers and other key players, it will be exciting to see who fills in those shoes this season. There is only one player returning for the Scarlets who played a sig-nificant amount of minutes on varsity last season, junior Cara Christiansen, who averaged 10 points and seven rebounds per game. “In addition to Christiansen, our varsity will include juniors Malorie Veroeven, Kenzie Franke, Jessica Goerger and sophomores Maddy Burandt and Lauren Resner,” Johns said. A lot of these girls had an exceptional junior varsity season

Wills leads a slew of juniors trying to find the winning formula for Scarlets

West should improve its record this season after finishing 8-19 with a young team last year.

This could be a very inter-esting year in Big Nine boy’s basketball. After dominating the confer-ence last season, many of the usual powerhouses like Owaton-na and Winona will be on their way down after losing talented players like Mark Blacklock (Winona) and Vaughn Thada (Owatonna). At the same time, teams that hovered around .500 last season, like Austin and Mankato East, may finally have the golden op-portunity they’ve been waiting for to make a run to the state tournament. But where does that leave the Mankato West Scarlets, who finished 8-19 in 2010-11? “We have a young team, which will be led by Dan Wills,” said head coach Tom Boone. “We expect to be competitive and steadily improve as the year progresses as our young guys gain experience.“ It’s always a gamble to expect young players to grow up quickly, but with the excep-tion of Wills, a junior forward that will be expected to shoulder much of the load, Boone just doesn’t have much of a choice. While normally that would be a little more concerning, the

way the landscape in the Big Nine appears this season, teams have evened out and the talent gap won’t be quite as wide as it has been for the Scarlets in the past. Sure, teams like Rochester Century, Austin, Owatonna and cross-town rival Mankato East all enter the season ranked higher and favored to finish with a better record than the Scar-lets, but 2011-12 looks like a great year to develop, and who knows how much Mankato West will improve by the end of the season. While the Big Nine will likely be dominated by the next wave of talented players on quality teams, including Roch-ester Century’s Ater Manyang, Austin’s Joe Aase and Mankato East’s Brody Ziegler, with zero seniors on the Scarlets’ roster, there’s no rush to win-at-all-costs immediately. West’s juniors like Wills, Austin Majeskie, Nick Herwig, Alex Knutson, Caleb Johnson and Ian Schwickert still have an-other year left before it’s time to start panicking, and sophomores like Kennedy Maker and Dillon Dale should be excited about the

After falling just short of the state tournament, the Cougars look to rebound East plans on making another run at the state tournament in 2011-12 with the same key players.

For the Mankato East girl’s basketball team, the sky's the limit — at least that’s what head coach Mike Barger thinks.

The Cougars finished last season with a 17-11 record, win-ning two playoff games before falling to Hutchinson, just short of the state tournament. This season, the Cougars will be led by the same cast of players as last season, and hope they can bring both a section champion-ship and a Big Nine conference championship banner to the Mankato East gymnasium.

“We have a great nucleus of players returning from a 17-11 team,” Barger said. “We have great players that force teams to guard us both inside and out, and a great group of seniors who help keep us focused on our goals.”

The Cougars will be forced to rely on some younger players. Key players Kelsey Mosher and Grace Menzkofer will need to be replaced due to graduation. Barger will likely look to Taylor Karge and Emmaline Crawford, who have had impressive off-season workouts and practices. Claire Ziegler, a sophomore, averaged 9.2 points per game and seven rebounds coming off the bench as a freshman. This

season, she could be tossed into the starting line-up.

“We have many role players who will step in and make us a tough team on both ends of the floor,” Barger said.

Last season, the Cougars started the season off by losing to Shakopee, New Prague and New Ulm, but during the their last 10 games (before losing to Hutchin-son), they were 8-2.

The Cougars focus on shoot-ing and second-chance opportu-nites, which makes it no surprise that those two are the strengths of the Cougars. Perhaps the most important thing that Barger strives for is playing as a team and team chemistry.

“[The] goals are the same they have been each year,” Barger said. “[To] compete and play our best game, every day… The rest should take care of itself.”

Last season, the Cougars fin-ished third in the final Big Nine standings behind Owatonna and Rochester Mayo. They finished No. 16 in the final state rankings, making them the only team in the Big Nine to finished the season-ranked in the top- 20.

The first practice began on November 14, and the Cougars played their first game against New Prague on Nov. 26 (results not available before print).

After a tough ending to last season despite a 16-8-2 record, the Mankato West boy’s hockey team is back and looking to get past that first round loss to Red Wing that ended its season. “Our guys that were in the game realized you have to work hard no matter what you’re ranked,” Scarlets head coach Cur-tis Doell said about last season’s disappointing finish. “They know now that you have to work harder than the opponent. Red Wing was a team that just wouldn’t quit.” After a good season last year from Mankato West, they are cur-rently looking to reload more than rebuild, as most teams do after a respectable season like they had. This year’s squad currently returns nine players from last season’s team that finished second in the Big Nine confer-ence, including goalie Zach Fox, who achieved two wins for the Scarlets last year and posted an astonishing 0.52 goals allowed against average a game and a .966 save percentage. Fox is definitely expected to perform well between the pipes. The other seniors are an equal mix of both sides of the puck, forwards and defensemen. “We have four forwards that will be leaned on heavily to put up some goals and a really strong group of four defensemen,” Doell

said of his senior leadership. Landon Brown comes in as the leading point-getter from last season, Brown’s junior year consisted of 14 goals and five as-sists. Tyler Mata also will be back after registered 17 points for the Scarlets last year. When it comes to conference matches this season, the Big Nine will be in a year of change. “This year we will play all teams twice, which is great for us,” Doell said. “There have also been plenty of coaching changes as well. I think we will fair well against our conference this year, we just need to play touch de-fense to be successful.” The rivalry match of the sea-son will take place in the second game of the year, as the Scarlets will go up against their cross-town rival: Mankato East. East is coming off a tough season in 2010-11, but is looking to rebound. “It’s a bit of excitement for our players to play against some of their friends that they played with growing up throughout the youth program,” Doell explained of the “East Meets West” rivalry. For now its practice time for Mankato West, until it opens up its 2011-12 season at home against New Prague in late No-vember.

MANKATO EAST BOY'S HOCKEY

As numbers continue to grow, Cougars becoming competitive slowly but surely East has 18 players on its squad this season after going 2-24 with only 15 bodies last year.JOEY DENTONstaff writer One of the greatest things about sports is there is always a next day, a next game and a next season. That’s what the Mankato East Cougars boy’s hockey team has realized heading into this upcoming hockey season. Cougars head coach Aaron Anderson called last season a “survival” season, and that is usually the case when you only have 15 players on a hockey team. The team’s season ended with a 13-1 loss to Red Wing in the section playoffs. “We had three goalies and 12 skaters on the team,” said Anderson. “We played most games with 10 skaters. This amounted to two wins on the year. All of our players worked hard and improved.” With a 2-24 record last season, there is only one way to go, and that is up. That’s what Anderson plans on doing this season. “We have more players this season, having two goalies and 16 skaters. It doesn't sound like much, but four more skat-ers will make a big difference. We have an added level of ex-perience because of last year, as well as some added skill improvement,” said Anderson.

Experience is one of the positives for the Cougars this season, as goalie Lucas Weihe is coming back to block pucks for a fourth consecutive year. He led the team last season in saves (642) and save percent-age (85.8%). “Our strengths will be a great deal of varsity experi-ence, speed and cohesiveness. Goaltending will also be a strength,” said Anderson. The Cougars will also have some offensive experience, as their two leaders in points last season are returning to the rink. Junior forward Ben Ney-ers had 11 points (four goals and seven assists) last season, and junior forward Dylan Boettcher had nine points, leading the team in goals (six) while adding three assists. Although the Cougars are bringing back a lot of experi-ence, that doesn’t mean they don’t have things to improve on. “A weakness might be lack of overall team speed,” Anderson said. “We do need to improve on our puck handling and passing as well. As we improve on these things, our team speed won't be as impor-tant.”

Anderson has selected four players to be captains and lead this team this season. Neyers, Boettcher, Weihe and junior forward Jordan Wenzel. Wenzel didn’t score a goal last season, but he was second on the squad in assists with four. This season will present

some tough matchups for the Cougars. They play their cross-town rivals, Mankato West, twice this year. The first game is on Dec. 1, and they meet again on Jan. 12. Both games will be played at All Seasons Arena. With all of the valuable

experience gained from last season, expect the Cougars to more than double their win total from last season and com-pete in the Big Nine.

MANKATO EAST BOY'S BASKETBALL

Experience will be key for Cougars to take a Big 9 and section title

East has its goals set high for 2011-12 season after an above-average 2010-11 campaign.

After an above-average 15-12 season in 2010-11, the Mankato East boy’s basket-ball team has the experience and the talent to improve on that and possibly make a run all the way to the state tournament.

Head coach Joe Mad-son’s main goals are a Big 9 title and winning he section tournament, and when he’s bringing back his top three scorers and top two returning rebounders, that goal isn’t out of reach.

“We are excited,” Madson said. “If we stay healthy, we should have a fun [and] suc-cessful year.”

The main contributors this season will be Brody Ziegler, Brett Olson, Taylor Hayenga, Brandon Kowalski, E.J. Hay-more, Aron Peterson, Bran-

don Adema and Yasin Omar. Colin Risting and Jordan Foix could also be facors.

Last season, the Cougars tied for fourth in the Big 9 with Austin and finished behind Owatonna, Winona and Rochester Century with an 11-7 record.

After beating Willmar 90-71 in the section quarter-finals, the Cougars lost 63-60 in overtime to Marshall in the semifinals.

Practice began for the Cougars on Nov. 21.

Chances are the Cougars have Dec. 28 circled on their schedules, as they gear up to get revenge against Marshall.

East will play its cross-town rivals, Mankato West, on the road Jan. 20 and at home Feb. 21.

The section tournament will begin on March 6.

MANKATO LOYOLA BOY'S BASKETBALL

Crusaders counting on big contributions from last season's key role players

Loyola lost three All-Conference players to graduation, but returns a solid nucleus this year.JOEY DENTONstaff writer Tim Anderson, the Mankato Loyola boy’s basketball head coach, liked what he saw last season from his team, and he can’t wait to see how far they go this season. Last season the team went 20-5 to finish second in the Gopher Conference to Water-ville-Elysian-Morristown High School. The team averaged 66 points per game last season and gave up 52. “We had a wonderful sea-son,” Anderson said. Like every high school team, the Loyola Crusaders will have some shoes to fill. The team lost arguably its best player in Jake Wesely, and other All-Conference selec-tions in Ike Hermer and Tyder Gach. Anderson thinks those will be hard shoes to fill, but he thinks there are players who have the capability to do so. “I think we will have some players step up this year and

take new spots,” Anderson said. The Crusaders have been known for their defensive pressure, and that won’t be any different this season. Anderson assures it. “We will not be as quick as last year, but we will still be a very good defensive team,” Anderson said. He also loves players who are tough physically and men-tally, and this season’s squad contains those intangibles. “We have some toughness that I like in the players we will have playing this year,” said Anderson. The Crusaders are having some experienced players re-turn for another season. Senior guard Luke Hermer averaged seven points and four rebounds last season. Senior forward Jake Clements is also coming back, and he averaged seven points and four rebounds last season.

“We do have some experi-ence coming back in Luke Hermer and Jake Clements, who both started and played big minutes for us last season,” Anderson said. Other returning players coming back for their senior seasons include: Forward Taylor Peterson, guard Brent Douglass, guard Luke Hermer, forward Zach Mullin, forward Ben Sjulstad, forward Jake Clements and forward Austin Maher. The Crusaders 2011-12 campaign will begin Dec. 6 against New Richland-H-E-G High School at Loyola High School. The following game, the Crusaders will definitely be challenged when last sea-son’s conference champion, Waterville-Elysian-Morristown High School, comes into town. These two teams will see each other again later in the season Jan. 24 at WEM High School. Photo courtesy of Mankato Free Press

Maple River looks to control the Valley, run the table for third season in a row

St. Clair, Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial and others trying to catch the Eagles this season.REECE HEMMESCHstaff writer

Winning a conference cham-pionship in any sport and in any conference is a great accom-plishment in Minnesota high school athletics. Winning it all and going undefeated is an even better accomplishment, but for a team to win the conference two years in a row without losing a single conference match is something that most coaches can only dream about. This is a dream that became a reality for Maple River head coach Chad Ostermann. His three-year tenure at Maple River has included not losing a confer-ence game the past two seasons, and two conference champion-ships to go with it. But the question on most bas-ketball fans’ minds in the area is can the Eagles do it again. One has to wonder how a power-house like Maple River can basically keep reloading, instead of rebuilding.

“We have a lot of expecta-tions for our guys, we expect to be at the top of the conference,” Ostermann explained of their recent success. “The coaches at all levels and the parents as well do a great job of getting our kids excited for basketball season, but the big thing is the kids re-ally improve on their own in the offseason.” This season might be tough for Maple River to do it again, as this year’s Valley Conference is even better than usual. St. Clair is returning a lot of depth this season after its 7-4 conference record last year. Just like in most years, you can also expect to find Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial, Grenada-Huntley-East Chain and Martin County West towards the top of the conference. Those three teams made up the three, four and five spots in last year’s conference standings.

SOUTH CENTRAL CONFERENCE BOY'S BASKETBALL

Saints return all five starters, are poised to make run at state tournament

Senior-laden St. Peter went 21-5 last season, and returns SCC MVP Joey Bartlett and others.LEE HANDELsports editor The South Central Confer-ence is annually one of the most competitive high school leagues in Minnesota for boy’s basketball and this season figures to be no different. Although many tough teams reside in the SCC, the preseason favorite to win the league heading into the 2011-12 season has to be the St. Peter Saints, who are coached by Kelly Raymond. The Saints went 21-5 last season and entered postseason play with very high expectations given their success in the regular season, as the team went 9-1 in SCC play and won the conference championship. Things did not go St. Peter’s way in the end, however, as they were eliminated a bit earlier than they expected to be in a hard-fought 50-49 loss to Kenyon-Wanamingo in the sub-section semifinals. The loss hit Raymond and his team hard, but the future still looked bright, as the Saints lost zero players to graduation. Every starter from last year’s roster returns this season for another run at the state tournament, and Ray-mond and his staff hope that last season’s experience is what puts the team over the top in 2011-12. “Anytime you have everyone

coming back, the expectations are going to be high,” said Raymond. “We want it that way. We know we’re not going to sneak up on anybody anymore and we know that we are going to get every team’s best effort when they play us.” This is Raymond’s fourth season at the helm for the Saints, and the team has gotten progres-sively better each year seeing how it went 4-20 just a few years ago. Raymond has been a head coach for 14 years now, and knows how to get the best out of his players. It also helps to have a talented roster loaded with senior leader-ship, which the Saints have this season. St. Peter is led by senior shooting guard Joey Bartlett, who led the team in scoring with 17.9 points per game last season and was named the SCC’s Most Valuable Player. Bartlett can do it all, also averaging seven rebounds and four assists per game last season. He is joined in the backcourt by senior point guard Chad Pop-pen, who led the team with 6.1 assists per game last season while averaging 12.3 PPG. One of the Saints’ starting forwards is senior Ben Rosburg, who averaged 14.1 PPG last season and led the team in rebounding with 8.6 RPG.

The starting lineup for St. Peter is rounded out by senior guard Pace Maier and junior big man Peter Kruize. All five starters are well above six feet tall, which gives the Saints a huge size advantage against other SCC teams. “These guys have varsity experience since their sophomore years, so they expect to play well and bring great leadership,” Ray-mond said. “We will rely on solid defense and this season and we will make an effort to have a more up-tempo style.” The Saints also will receive big contributions from senior Josh Leonard and juniors Josh Peymann, Brad Rice, Nathan Kempenich and Jordan Sorensen. The future also looks bright for Joey’s little brother, Kolin Bar-tlett, who is a 6’4” sophomore that was the team’s Rookie of the Year last season and is in line for even more minutes this season once he returns from a knee injury. With all that talent and size, Raymond’s philosophy is pretty simple. “We just want to let the players play,” he said. “We want to not only use our size, but get out and run and get some easy baskets. Having Chad at the point makes

Grant Pope and Tate Harmon lead a W-E-M boy's team that went to the section finals last season, while the NRHEG girl's squad returns numerous key players from last year.

TIGE HUTCHESONstaff writer

After falling one game short of competing for a state champi-onship last season, the reigning third-place Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers seem to have all of the right pieces needed for another run to the state tourna-ment. Over the past couple seasons of Gopher Conference basketball, both boy’s and girl’s, it’s been hard to pick a favorite heading into the season, with teams like WEM, United South Central, New Richland-Hartland-Ellen-dale-Geneva, Bethlehem Acad-emy and Mankato Loyola always keeping fans guessing. While 2011 still looks to be another very competitive year of boy’s basketball, for the first time in quite a while all eyes are favor-ing one team, Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, to start the season. “WEM will be the team to beat in the Gopher this year,” said Tim Anderson, the head boy’s basketball coach at Mankato Loyola. “[Grant] Pope and [Tate] Harmon will be two of the best players in our conference. They finished third in state last year and have all but two players back this year.” Perhaps the most intimidating

aspect of WEM’s 2011 squad is its balance. The Buccaneers bring back players that seem more than capable of living up to the expectations, including the defen-sive game-changer Pope and the offensively-explosive Harmon. “Harmon is a tremendous scor-er,” said Robert Stevermer, head boy’s basketball coach at United South Central. “He can beat you from the perimeter and attacking the basket. He has the ability to put up points in a hurry.” “Pope is a one-man wrecking crew defensively,” said Steverm-er. “He is the engine that makes them go. His quickness and in-stincts make him fun to watch and extremely hard to play against.” But while Waterville-Elysian-Morristown certainly has the tal-ent to run the conference, it surely won’t be a cakewalk. After putting in their dues the past couple of seasons, Loyola sharpshooter Luke Hermer and USC’s 6’8’’matchup nightmare Kyle Baumann also highlight competitive teams with snapping jaws, ready to slay giants like WEM. On the girl’s side, defending conference champion New Rich-land-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva

looks like the odds-on favorite to defend its title. Led by sophomore Carlie Wagner, who many consider the best player in the conference, the Panthers bring back four starters from last season’s conference championship team, including senior post Anna Schlaak and sophomore guard Jade Schultz. “NRHEG is the team to beat in the conference and section this season while the rest will be battling for second place,” said WEM head girl’s basketball coach Gabe Hauer. But defending a championship is always harder than winning it. While plenty of other teams, including United South Central, Blooming Prairie and Medford have enough talent to pose a challenge, it seems NRHEG’s biggest threat will be Faribault’s Bethlehem Academy, which also returns the majority of last year’s squad, including two-time All-Conference team member Jessie Matthews. “Faribault Bethlehem Acade-my will also be a strong team this year,” said USC girl’s head bas-ketball coach Stu Hendrickson. “They return several key players from last year's squad that took

third in the conference despite battling injuries all year.” While Waterville-Elysian-Morristown’s boys and New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Ge-neva’s girls may appear unstop-pable, one thing that is always consistent in the Gopher Confer-ence is it’s competitiveness.

Fans can expect to see underdogs take their best shot at the conference titans night in and night out, and 2011 has potential to be one of the most interesting and memorable basketball sea-sons that the Gopher Conference has ever seen.

MINNESOTA RIVER CONFERENCE BASKETBALL

Expanded Minnesota River is pretty much wide open heading into 2011-12

League newcomer Watertown-Mayer is the early favorite as teams like Belle Plaine reload.LEE HANDELsports editor

As has been the case in recent seasons, the Minnesota River conference is once again tough to predict heading into the 2011-12 boy’s basketball season. One of the teams that usually contends year in and year out is Belle Plaine, but the Tigers have many more question marks heading into this season than usual thanks to a veteran, yet inexperienced roster. Head coach John Wellner is entering his second year as the leader of the boy’s varsity squad after spending three years as an assistant with the team. His first campaign at the helm went fairly well, as the Tigers posted a 13-13 record be-fore falling in the second round of sub-sections to Waterville-Elysian-Morristown. Despite having six seniors who are returning this season, Belle Plaine lost its entire start-ing lineup from last season and is hoping to reload and replace last season’s team leaders. Perhaps the most vital player the Tigers lost to graduation was Jeremiah Fogarty, who started at point guard for the Tigers the last three seasons and aver-aged 15 points, five rebounds and seven assists. Fogarty now attends and plays basketball for

Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato. Belle Plaine’s key players include senior shooting guard/small forward Dan Biel, senior shooting guard Everett Kruschke and junior center Alec Koepp. Other players who figure to play a big role for the Tigers include senior guard JP Bergs, senior forwards Cory Herrmann and Billy Boecker, as well as senior center Shane Mickle. While these seniors and their experience will help Belle Plaine on the wings and in the paint, the biggest challenge will be replacing Fogarty at the point. Coach Wellner is searching for his next point guard, and could wind up starting sophomore Aaron Bigaouette, the younger brother of former Tiger star Ben Bigaouette, at the point. Regardless of what kind of rotation Wellner uses, he is confident that the Tigers’ style of play sets them up well for suc-cess in Minnesota River confer-ence play. It also helps to have a bunch of tall players. “Our biggest strength is our size,” said Wellner. “We should be able to rebound fairly well and our post game will be counted on a lot.” Despite being a tall team,

Belle Plaine still wants to play at a faster pace when the opportu-nity presents itself. “We are going to try to run when we can and play an up-tempo style, otherwise we are going to get the ball inside to the post players and play inside-out basketball,” Wellner said. While Bigaouette figures to be the point guard of the future, the Tigers primary weaknesses heading into this season figure to be at the guard spots. “We might struggle to find someone who can get the ball into the post,” said Wellner. “Our ball handling and our pass-ing are two things that we need to work on.” The Minnesota River confer-ence is always competitive, and became bigger this past offseason. The conference added Watertown-Mayer heading into the 2011-12 season, and the school figures to be the favorite to win the league in its inaugural year as a member. Mayer Lutheran also looks strong heading into this season and should be amongst the top teams in the conference. “Those two schools are the cream of the crop, everyone Web Photo

SOUTH CENTRAL CONFERENCE GIRL'S BASKETBALL

St. Peter hoping to repeat in SCC with plenty of new faces receiving minutes

The Saints will be fighting with Fairmont, Blue Earth and New Ulm for top spot in the SCC.JOEY DENTONstaff writer Even though the South Cen-tral Conference has fewer teams than the other conferences in the area, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t going to be any excitement in girl’s basketball this season. It just makes every game more crucial, which figures to make every game exciting. “One thing that makes this conference different is that there are only six teams,” St. Peter head coach Bob Southworth said. “That allows us to play a lot of non-conference games. Because there are less teams, it makes each conference game more important because one mess up and it could be hard to make up for that. Traditionally, most teams in the league have had strong programs throughout all grade levels, which make for competitive programs.” Last season, the conference champion wasn’t decided until late in the season when St. Peter beat Fairmont near the end of

February to win the conference. Just to show how important every game is, Fairmont beat St. Peter earlier in the season to keep the conference lead close until that final matchup between the two teams, when St. Peter won the conference outright with a 9-1 SCC record, followed closely by a 7-3 Fairmont team. Blue Earth, New Ulm, St. James and Waseca rounded out the conference standings. For St. Peter, its season took some wrong turns, but they figured it out and still won the conference outright. “The season went pretty well for our team. We did suffer two season-ending injuries before Christmas to two of our starters, but the team stuck together and other girls stepped up to keep us on track to reach our goals,” Southworth said. One of St. Peter’s biggest obstacles this season will be overall experience. Many of its

key players from last season graduated, so it will be interest-ing to see how the younger play-ers will take on their new roles. “I am excited to see how our team develops throughout the year,” Southworth said. “We will be playing some girls that do not have a lot of varsity experience and it will be fun to see who steps up for us to help contrib-ute.” With the inexperience ques-tion in effect for St. Peter, it sounds like some of the other teams will have a chance to take home the conference crown this season. “I believe Blue Earth and Fairmont will be the favorites. I do believe we will be in the run-ning, but Blue Earth has a lot of girls back from a good team last year,” Southworth said. Fairmont will have its chance to get revenge on St. Peter on Dec. 16th at St. Peter High School. Photo courtesy of Mankato Free Press

WEST GIRL'S BBALL continued from 3last year, and Coach Johns hopes that can translate to this season’s varsity team. “This group had a very suc-cessful junior varsity season last year, so with their work ethic and high expectations, hopefully this year will be a repeat of last year.” And just like every other team, there are some strengths and weaknesses when it comes to this season’s Scarlets. “Our strengths this season should be our defense and our transition game,” Johns said. “We need to improve on our rebounding and aggressiveness on offense.” So far the practices have been very productive and the team knows its expectations and

will do everything they can to reach its goals this season. “I have a very excited group with very high expectations,” Johns said. “They have a great work ethic and push each other in practice every day to get better.” The Scarlets start their season after Thanksgiving on Nov. 29th against Hutchinson at Mankato West High School. Later on in the season the team travels to Rochester to take on a very good Rochester Mayo on January 13th. Mayo went 16-2 in the Big Nine conference last season. West’s next game is against its cross-town rivals from Mankato East, on Jan. 17th at Mankato West High School.

WEST BOY'S BBALL continued from 4potential of getting quality play-ing time this season. While it may seem like the future may never come and the end of Mankato West’s rebuilding process will never be in sight, 2011-12 looks to be a pivotal year in the pro-cess. Next season, in 2012-13, Mankato West will likely bring back a senior-laden squad with enough talent and experi-ence to finally demand a little respect. But that’s still a year away. For now, fans will have to sit

back, cross their fingers and grit their teeth through one more season of growing pains as the constantly improving, yet still young Scarlets should be a little more competitive while likely still struggling to stay afloat in the Big Nine. Be patient, Mankato West fans, the light at the end of the tunnel is closer than it seems. It may not be this year, but this is the roster that can be expected to get you to the top in the future.

With the layout of those four teams being so close to one another, that makes for some heated rivalries in the Valley Conference. “Us (Maple River) and Lake Crystal-Wellcome have always had a very heated ri-valry,” Ostermann said of their rivals from down the road. Maple River battles LCWM every year for the Little Brown

Jug. That rivalry has consisted of an 18-4 record posted by Maple River in the past 22 meetings between the two teams. The one thing that could flag Maple River this season is how well they do with adver-sity. The Eagles have already lost two All-Conference play-ers from last season due to graduation, and another one

due to injury. But if Maple River can stay healthy, expect to see its name at the top of the standings at the end of the season.

VALLEY CONF. BBALL continued from 11

SCC BBALL continued from 12life a lot easier for us in this area.” Raymond noticed oppos-ing teams played a lot of zone and junk defenses against the Saints last season to counter St. Peter’s size advantage, and already has the team working on its zone offense right away in this season’s first practices. “We need to work on knocking down shots and not settling for the first shot op-portunity, because we can get

a better shot on the fourth or fifth,” said Raymond. While St. Peter is the early favorite, Fairmont also appears to be strong this season, and Blue Earth is much-improved. Waseca and New Ulm also figure to contend at the top of the conference. If the Saints can repeat as SCC champions, tough squads such as Waterville-Elysian-Morristown and Hayfield may await them further down the

road. “It’s going to be tough,” Raymond said. “On any given day any team in the SCC can beat anybody. Obviously everybody wants to win State, but we pride ourselves on improving and getting better every day.”

MN RIVER BBALL continued from 14

else is a question mark,” Well-ner said. If that is the case, Belle Plaine certainly has what it takes to contend in the River

conference this season and finish in the top half of the conference standings. “We just want to play as hard as possible and compete

every night, if we do that we’ll be fine,” said Wellner.

GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE MEN'S BASKETBALL

Gusties will rely heavily on eight seniors in ultra-competitive MIAC this season

Head coach Mark Hanson seems to always have a quality team, and this year is no different.

REECE HEMMESCHstaff writer When a college basketball team can accumulate three or four seniors on its roster for its upcoming season, the coaching staff normally thinks of that as a pretty good start. But three or four is nothing compared to this year’s Gusta-vus-Adolphus men’s basket-ball team, who identifies eight seniors on its 2011-12 roster, a very high number for any level of college basketball. “Our chemistry is pretty good at this point,” head coach Mark Hanson explained of his senior-dominated squad. “Not only because they have been together for three years, but they also have done a great job of being inclusive of the rest of the squad.” One of those seniors, Seth Anderson, was the team’s lead-ing scorer last year with over 13 points per game. The 6’2” guard has already started out this season hot in the squad’s

first game victory over Buena Vista, where Anderson led the Golden Gusties with 45 points, including a mid-range jumper as time expired to propel GAC to a 98-96 victory. Anderson will be called upon regularly for the Gusties, as will other seniors like Bobby John-son, who averaged over eight points per game last season, and big man Paul Blacklock, who returns as the team’s leading rebounder from last season. Another big scorer that is back on the squad from last season is junior James Hill, who last season was third on the team in points per game, averaging 11 per game. Things are in place for the Gusties as they once again go up for the Minnesota Intercol-legiate Athletic Conference title, a feat Hanson has done six times already in his coaching career.

TOMAHAWK CONFERENCE BASKETBALL

Parity abounds in the Tomahawk for both boy's and girl's hoops this year

New Ulm Cathedral should improve on its 15-11 mark in boy's action last year, while the girl's side of the conference figures to be up for grabs after MVL took the crown last season.TIGE HUTCHESONstaff writer

It’s pretty fair to say that, in both boy’s and girl’s basketball, the Tomahawk Conference is wide open. With a lot of experience and talent returning from last year and a lot of promising talent on the rise from junior varsity, the list of contenders in boy’s basketball includes most of the conference. “I think that Minnesota Val-ley Lutheran, Cedar Mountain/Comfrey, Springfield, Sleepy Eye and Sleepy Eye Saint Mary's have the best chances to win the conference this year. They all have experienced play-ers coming back and/or highly skilled players coming up from the JV. They also have coaches who have done a great job over the past few years,” said Paul Hazuka, the head boy’s bas-ketball coach of the New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds.

Of course, whether it was due to modesty, respect for the other teams in the conference or some psychological ploy that he almost got away with, Ha-zuka failed to mention that his Greyhounds, who finished 15-11 overall and 8-8 in the Toma-hawk Conference last season, are also very much in the mix for the conference champion-ship. Of last season’s All-Toma-hawk Conference honored ju-niors, perhaps the most exciting is New Ulm Cathedral’s 6’4” forward Brian Nosbush, who led the Greyhounds with 17 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per game last season. With Nosbush back for his senior season, New Ulm Cathedral returns one of the most talented frontcourts in the conference and has a lot to be excited about this season.

“New Ulm Cathedral will have experience going for it with eight seniors coming back from last year’s 15-11 season. We lost a good point guard in Kevin Larson, but we have enough ball handlers to get the ball into scoring positions dur-ing the season,” Hazuka said. “Brian Nosbush will be our man in the middle who has the ability to lead the team in many ways. Our quickness and competitive-ness will carry us through a successful season.” That doesn’t mean it will be easy, though. Other All-Confer-ence players returning for their senior season include Minnesota Valley Lutheran’s Nate Siemers, Sleepy Eye’s Tyler Hadley, Sean Mathiowetz of Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s and Springfield’s Alex Fink.

Gusties hockey stocked with young prospects ready to rock the MIAC

Gustavus brings back its top four scorers from last season and is thinking conference title.

COLE KUKOWSKIstaff writer

The Gustavus Adolphus men’s hockey team enters the 2011-12 season with a roster loaded with underclassmen and talent. The Gusties have one senior, 11 juniors, seven sophomores and eight first-year icers on a team that boasted a 15-10-2 overall record and went 8-6-2 in the highly competitive Min-nesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Ross Ring-Jarvi is the only senior on the roster and is the team’s returning leading scorer. Ring-Jarvi had 26 points, re-cording nine goals and 17 assists in 27 games played last season. The senior was also the team’s plus/minus leader with a +12 mark for the year. Gustavus also returns its second, third and fourth highest scorers. Ryan Johnson, Zach May and Gustav Bengston recorded 21, 17 and 16 points, respectively a year ago. Currently, Ring-Jarvi and May each have recorded five points, each scoring three goals and tallying two assists in the early stages of this season. Gustavus will turn to junior goaltender Tyler Venne to stop pucks between the pipes this season. Venne will have the re-

sponsibility of replacing recent graduate Josh Swartout, who started 22 games and recorded 11 wins a season ago. Venne, a New Hope, Minn. native, went 4-1 in five starts last year with a 2.62 goals against average while tallying a .895 save percentage. Gustavus has two players on its roster that played junior hockey prior to becoming a Gustie, while seven skaters came straight from high school. 18 athletes hail from Minnesota, while three athletes come to Gustavus via the international route. Junior defenseman Henrik Reisvang is from Nesbru, Nor-way. Junior forward Brian White is from Fort Frances, Ontario, and sophomore defenseman Gustav Bengtson is from Stock-holm, Sweden. Head Coach Brett Peterson is entering his 12th season as head coach at Gustavus. Last season, the Gusties qualified for their 10th consecutive MIAC post-season appearance and defeated Augsburg in the play-in game in overtime. In his first 11 seasons, Peter-son has compiled a 148-126-20 record. He is currently ranked second all-time in career Photo Courtesy of Sport Pix

MSU MEN'S HOCKEY SEASON PREVIEW

Mavericks secure between the pipes thanks to a pair of veteran goaltenders

As injuries continued to mount for MSU early on this season, Austin Lee and Phil Cook were more than willing to step up in net.

JOEY DENTONstaff writer

It hasn’t been an ideal start for the Minnesota State, Mankato men’s hockey team, but they are encouraged that they can turn things around and be competitive against other teams by being competitive against each other. One of the undetermined starting positions on the team is at goalie. Two guys, one spot. Junior goaltender Phil Cook and senior goaltender Austin Lee having been competing this season for the top spot in front of the net. Cook, who played in 28 games as goalie last season, real-izes that head coach Troy Jutting is looking for consistency and leadership in his starting goalie. “Coach wants us to steal a game for [the team] and start playing consistent, and that’s what we need to show to have a main guy as our starter,” Cook said. Even though they both are very competitive on the ice and know there is only one spot to fill, they haven’t let this com-petition get in the way of their relationship off the ice. “It’s competitive on the ice, but off the ice we have a really good friendship,” said Lee. Cook agrees. “We are all one big family,

and we are all a bunch of broth-ers. We room with each other on the road, so we are good friends. But we are competitive on the ice,” said Cook. “This competi-tion doesn’t affect our friendship at all. I go out there and worry about myself and stopping pucks. When he starts, I support him and I feel there hasn’t been any tension between us.” One of the things these two have in common is that they love playing for the Mavericks. “It’s a great community here, and there is great support,” Cook said. “I’m from Chicago, so I’m not used to Minnesota where it’s all about hockey. My favorite part of being a Maverick is winning at the Verizon Wireless Center.” Lee was highly recruited as a senior in high school, being named an Associated Press First Team All-State goalie in 2006. He decided to come here for many good reasons, such as the tough WCHA competition and for his major. “There was a combination of factors. Playing in the WHCA was one of them and getting a chance to play some of the best teams in the nation,” Lee said. “I love the atmosphere here, and the support they give us every game is great.”

The Mavericks haven’t had their ideal start this season with a 3-9 record, including two road losses against No. 3 Denver two weekends ago to start conference play 2-5. “Our team hasn’t exactly got-ten off to a great start. There are plenty of games left to be played, so we are looking to turn things around,” Lee said. “We have only played two games in the WCHA, so there is still an op-portunity to turn things around.” The Mavericks have been in-fected by the injury bug to start the season, with as many as six players injured at times. On the trip to Denver, the team didn’t have a full roster due to the num-ber of injured players. The good news is the Mavericks plan to have three regulars coming back this weekend. Cook feels like this is a time for the older players to lead the team back to the WCHA race and for the younger players to step in right away and help the team any way they can. “It’s time for us older guys to bear it out and help the team through this,” Cook said. “We know we can win games, we just need to find a way to get an ugly one first and then we can get on a roll.”

It takes time and effort to build a winning tradition at any college program. Whenever a program finally gets over the hump and becomes a perennial contender, people often like to look back and reflect upon when the foundation for success was laid. This season’s Minnesota State, Mankato women’s hockey senior class, including captains Ariel Mackley, Moira O’Connor and Jackie Otto, might go down as the group that first expe-rienced the turning point for women’s hockey in Mankato. The Mavericks appeared to

be heading in the right direc-tion back in 2003-04, when the program had its first winning season under Jeff Vizenor. Vi-zenor struggled to win after that, stepping down as head coach midway through the 2008-09 season, the first with the pro-gram for this year’s senior class. The group had every reason to be angry and uncertain, as the coach who had recruited them to play at MSU bailed on them in their rookie seasons. The team finished out the season pretty much without a head coach. “We really didn’t have a head coach,” said O’Connor. “We had some talented players, but we lacked leadership and structure.”

Things changed that offsea-son when Eric Means, who had been an assistant on the MSU men’s team, took over as the third head coach in program history. “You can tell Means just knows his hockey more than anybody we had before him,” Mackley said. “He has made us realize that if we play hard and play as a team, good will come from it.” “Means just demands a lot more from us and has more confidence in us and what we are doing,” said O’Connor. Mackley is from Minnesota, playing her high school hockey at Burnsville, and has played

both forward and defender for the Mavericks. O’Connor (forward) and Otto (defender) are both from Illinois. The trio, along with seniors Alli Altmann, Emmi Leinonen and Jenna Pe-terson, leads a roster that is full of young talent. MSU is off to a 5-9 start this season, and is 1-7 early on in WCHA play. The Mavericks have a good mix of veterans and underclassmen, who all see substantial time on the ice. This has created a good competitive atmosphere in practice because every player knows that playing time is up for grabs. “Just the pace of practice [has changed],” said Mackley.

“Everyone is going hard. This isn’t maybe the most talented team since we’ve been here, but this team works the hardest.” The seniors also think this season’s squad gets along better than any other since they’ve been at MSU, and note that all 24 girls generally get along, which wasn’t always the case in the past. “In the beginning of this sea-son we have done a lot of team gathering things that have made us closer,” Otto said. “We are not afraid to make mistakes on the ice and we pick each other

Front LineThe Mavericks have been paced on offense so far this season by newcomer Jean-Paul Lafontaine, who currently leads the team in goals (5) and points (8) through the first 12 games of the season. Senior captain Michael Dorr has battled the injury-bug early on for MSU, and has six points so far this season. Fellow senior Justin Jokinen (3 pts) also figures to see a lot of time up front for the Mavericks this season. Freshman Matt Leitner has also been a surprise for MSU early this season, and is amongst the leaders on the squad in assists (4) and shots (31) while filling in for numerous injured Mavericks such as Adam Mueller, Eriah Hayes and J. P. Burkemper. Freshman Johnny McInnis and junior Eli Zuck will also contribute this season.

The Mavericks are deeper at the forward position this season than in any other under head coach Eric Means. Junior Lauren Smith leads the team in both assists (8) and points (11). She is joined by senior Emmi Leinonen, who has 10 points on the season. Sophomore sensations Kari Lundberg (10 pts), Lauren Barnes (9 pts), Kathleen Rogan (7 pts), Nicole Germaine (7 pts) and Tracy McCann (5 pts) also see a lot of ice time and make up a nucleus that has the potential for big things at MSU. Junior Lauren Zrust (7 pts) also contributes a lot up front. Seniors Ariel Mackley and Moira O’Connor do not carry much of the scoring load, but have done a great job leading this young group. Rogan leads the team with six goals. Senior Jenna Peterson and freshman Kara Power also figure to contribute for MSU.

Senior Cameron Cooper is serving as an assistant captain this season for MSU and is a three-year letterwinner who won the team’s Most Improved Player award last season. Cooper has been one of the few key Mavericks to play in nearly all 12 games this season and has stabilized the MSU defense against some tough competition. Senior captain Tyler Elbrecht also figures to anchor the defense, but has been hampered by injuries and missed the series against Denver a few weeks ago. Freshman Zach Palmquist (6 pts) has played well filling in for the likes of Elbrecht and sophomore Danny Heath, who should contribute here when healthy. Junior Evan Mosey (3 pts) also figures to see substantial time on the blue line this season.

Senior Jackie Otto is serving as an assistant captain this season and has two goals, three assists and five points for the Mavericks from the back line. She is joined by junior Emilia Andersson, who is perhaps the Mavericks most lethal threat on the power play and has three goals this season after recently playing for the Swedish National Team. Junior Erika Magnusson is the primary backup to Andersson and Otto, but sophomores Elisabeth Hewett and Danielle Scholzen also will log time on the blue line this season. Freshman Shelby Moteyunas should start here in the future.

Goaltenders Austin Lee and Phil Cook have started nine and three games, respectively. Lee, a senior, has allowed 28 goals for a 3.14 goals against average and is 3-6 on the season. Cook has allowed 18 goals for a 6.03 GAA while going 0-3. Each goaltender will have to play above-average for MSU to have a chance in WCHA play.

Senior Alli Altmann has had a solid career in net for the Mavericks and is the starter this season. Sophomore Danielle Butters has also played well when given the opportunity this season. Altmann has gone 4-5 in net so far, while Butters is 1-4 despite an impressive 2.96 goals against average. This position is a strength of the team.

BIG NINE CONFERENCE WRESTLING

The Big Nine conference for the past few years has been a wrestling conference that sees two teams normally at the top, and they are Albert Lea Area and Owatonna. But through it all there has been one or two teams that have been sitting right outside the circle of those two squads just waiting for the perfect time to make a move. This year that team poised to make a move could be the Scarlets of Mankato West. West has been around the fourth-place mark in the Big Nine for about the past five seasons, but this year could very well be the year they break out and try to bust into the top two. “Our success will come through our commitment,” Mankato West head coach Dustin Buttell said of this season’s squad. “Also from our determination for excellence through continuous hard work.” Hard work will be the way to

go, as it is easier said then done when it comes knocking off the big boys of the Big Nine. Albert Lea returns as the con-ference winner from last year, as it went 8-0 and advanced to the state tournament at the Xcel Energy Center, which ended in a fourth-place finish for the Tigers. Albert Lea also accumulated nine individuals in the state tour-nament as well. Owatonna was the second-place team in the Big Nine last season and was the Section 1 runner-up, losing to Albert Lea in a 28-21 dog fight. “The Big Nine has always had a great wrestling tradition,” Buttell said of the conference outlook. “Albert Lea and Owa-tonna always play big roles in that, and they will be well-repre-sented once again this year.” The rest of Minnesota seems to agree with Buttell as well, as Owatonna and Albert Lea pull down top spots in Class 3A in the preseason poll, which has

Owatonna at No. 6, and Albert Lea at No. 9. But once again, expect schools like Mankato West and Faribault to be right on their tails in the conference standings. “I think one big thing is people need to start buying into

our program as well,” Buttell said. He makes a solid argument, as a team with no belief is really nothing. So if Mankato West can put together a run this year, don’t be surprised to see them gain some

ground in the Big Nine. It’s a slow-moving train to knock off teams with traditions like Albert Lea and Owatonna, but the kings can’t reign on their thrones forever. And if they fall, teams like Mankato West will be there to take over.

GUSTAVUS BBALL continued from 17The seven-time MIAC Coach of the Year believes that Gustavus’ strength comes in the depth they have. “I hope our depth is such that we won’t have to count on a top scorer or two this season,” Hanson said. “We have always thought that it is not important who scores, but that Gustavus scores.” To get back to the top of the MIAC, they will have to beat the defending national champions, the St. Thomas Tommies, a squad that was recently ranked eighth in the NCAA Division-III Preseason Poll. Last season the Tommies were an offensive powerhouse, as they averaged just over 73 points per game. This season could very well

appear to be the same, as they re-turn one of their top scorers from last season in Tommy Hannon. Gustavus will be out for revenge on UST, as the Tommies beat the Gusties all three times they played last season, all in close fashion as well. “The difference in a lot of wins and losses is a few significant plays. We need to be sure to play complete games and make plays on both ends of the floor,” Hanson explained. If the Gusties can keep up their solid play from last season’s MIAC tournament, watch out for Gustavus to finish as one of the top team’s in the MIAC this season.

But with Nosbush in the middle, New Ulm Cathedral has just as much firepower as the rest of the conference and can be counted on to be one of the many teams fight-ing for the conference title. On the girl’s side, Minnesota Valley Lutheran (15-1 overall in 2010-11) and Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart (13-3 overall in 2010-11) dominated the Tomahawk Confer-ence last season and fought each other until the finish for the confer-ence title. But after MVL lost Heather Danell and Bailey Lange to gradua-tion and Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stew-art graduated star players Karlee Il-gen and Lynsey Runke, both teams

have lost a lot of talent, leaving the door wide open for someone new to run the show in 2011-12. But who will it be? There is no clear-cut favorite. The boys are emerging and looking forward to one more season with some of the best players in confer-ence history while the girls are, for the most part, rebuilding after graduating most of the talent from last year. With all 18 teams feeling they have a chance at winning the Tomahawk Conference title, the only thing for sure is that it’s going to be a lot of fun to watch this winter.

wins at Gustavus behind Don Roberts. During his tenure at Gustavus, Peterson has coached 15 All-Conference players, two MIAC Players of the Year, six All-Americans and David Martinson, the National Player of the Year in 2010. After starting out this season 0-1-2, Gustavus has re-bounded to defeat UW-Stevens Point 2-1 in overtime and split

with Bethel to go 2-1-0 in its last three games. The Gusties, now 2-2-2 overall, will once again be challenged by MIAC foes Hamline, St. Thomas and St. Olaf. Gustavus will compete in a crucial conference series against St. Thomas on No-vember 18-19, Hamline on February 2-3 and St. Olaf on February 17-18 to conclude

the regular season. All MIAC series are home-and-home formats because of the schools’ proximity to each other. If the Gusties can defend their home ice and steal a few games on the road, coach Peterson and his squad could do well for themselves in the MIAC this season.

up whenever we do.” The program has had some pretty big wins and moments during the last few seasons, none bigger than last season’s series in North Dakota against the Fighting Sioux. The Mavericks lost the first game 1-6, then rebounded the next day with a 5-3 win that in-cluded a bench-clearing brawl in the closing seconds. Given their fierce rivalry with the Sioux, the girls will always remember that game. Other highlights for the trio include upsets of Wisconsin, Minnesota-Duluth and Bemidji State. “Beating UMD on the week-end of its ‘Decade of Domi-

nance’ celebration was pretty cool,” O’Connor said. But one win that has dodged them is defeating the Golden Gophers of Minnesota, which they can still accomplish later this season. “I just want us to finish with a winning record and sweep the teams we know we should,” said Mackley. “I think the top teams know that they can’t just show up and beat us anymore.” The seniors know that life in the WCHA is tough, but they wouldn’t want to be in any other conference. “Its by far the most competi-tive league, nothing compares to it,” Otto said. The girls enjoy being

Division-I hockey players and take pride in how far they have come. “It’s what you work for,” said O’Connor. “We want to be known for starting the change of women’s hockey at MSU.” Many moments off the ice will also be cherished by the seniors, such as the team’s paintballing trip and recent Hal-loween party. “We pretty much spend every day and hour together,” Mack-ley said. “This team is like a second family to me.”

BETHANY LUTHERAN COLLEGE BASKETBALL MSU MEN'S BASKETBALL

A new era begins for Vikings men, while women trying to exceed expectations

With Rick Jeddeloh out as men's head coach, Dave Balza takes over a talented roster with hopes of taking the program to the next level. Senior forward Jessica Englund leads the women's team.LEE HANDELsports editor

The Bethany Lutheran Col-lege men’s basketball program was rocked in the offseason when eight-year head coach Rick Jeddeloh resigned follow-ing the Vikings’ final game of the season. It has since been rumored that Jeddeloh was forced out by the program’s administration, which was looking to go in a different direction after Jedde-loh’s 18 years as a coach of the team. While it was sad to see Jeddeloh go, BLC found an established replacement to lead its men’s basketball team this season, hiring Dave Balza as its new head coach last April. Balza was previously the head coach at Florida Gulf Coast, a Division-I program, and directed the Eagles to an impressive 114-39 record in his nine seasons at the helm. Balza also helped the program make the transition from Division-II to Division-I competition. The Vikings have a talented roster heading into this season and have been picked to finish second in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. The team has also challenged

itself in its non-conference schedule, with games against St. Olaf and Bethel. BLC dropped both games, falling to the Oles 71-50 and the Royals 62-59 in double overtime. The Vikings are led by junior shooting guard Alex Weldon, who transferred from local Minnesota State, Mankato two years ago. Weldon led the team in scoring last season, averag-ing 13.8 points per game, and has already been putting up big numbers this season. Fellow juniors Garrett Ben-son, Derek Peterson, Pat Garvin and Gavin Kroehler round out the starting five for the Vikings. Kroehler averaged 11.8 points per game, Peterson averaged 11.4 PPG and Benson averaged 9.9 PPG last season. BLC also has newcomer Ja-mal Beavers, a junior guard who should contribute off the bench this season. Northwestern College is predicted to win the UMAC this season, and the University of Minnesota-Morris and College of St. Scholastica are also pro-jected to contend in the UMAC on the men’s side this year.BLC WOMEN'S BBALL / page 31 Photo Courtesy of Sport Pix

MSU MEN'S BASKETBALL

Mavericks open regular season slate with win, picked to finish third in NSIC

REECE HEMMESCHstaff writer

Senior Stephen Kirschbaum, along with sophmores Connor O'Brien and Jimmy Whitehead, will lead MSU this year after being a part of the team's run to the Final Four last season.

For the third season in a row, the Minnesota State, Mankato men’s basketball team started its season with a win; defeating Dickinson State by a score of 70-55 Sunday night in front of a crowd of 457 at Bresnan Arena. This marks the first win of the season for the Mavericks after an impressive run at a national championship last season. MSU took a 32-29 lead into the locker room at halftime. With five minutes left in the second half, the Mavericks still saw themselves ahead of Dickinson State by only seven points. Eventually the Mav-ericks ran away with it and secured the season-opening 15-point win. MSU sophomore center Connor O’Brien led the way for the Mavericks, tallying 15 points and 15 rebounds in the winning effort, both career highs. O’Brien also added six assists to go along with the double-double. Sophomore point guard Jimmy Whitehead contributed 16 points as well for MSU, and freshman wing Kelly Madison also reached double-digits with

14 in his first game ever as a Maverick. Dickinson State’s dynamic forwards, Caper Hesseldal and Matthew Lee, both contrib-uted 18 points to lead the Blue Hawks. However, the biggest contribution of the game came from MSU’s deep bench, as the boys of the pine combined for 24 points, an elevated num-ber compared to Dickinson State’s four bench points. The Mavericks also did a great job of getting back on de-fense, allowing zero fast-break points to the Blue Hawks. This year’s squad features a somewhat young roster, as they report only one senior in sharpshooter Stephen Kirsch-baum. Kirschbaum came off the bench last year to score 10 or more points in five of MSU’s matchups. Another player that will be asked to step up this year is O’Brien. O’Brien averaged six points and five rebounds per game last season. He also hauled in three double-doubles in his freshman year. Sophomore point guard

Jimmy Whitehead will also be called upon to step up, as he saw action in 32 of MSU’s 33 games last year. This year’s crop of young players will also be used fre-quently as they are building for the future. Freshman Zach Ro-mashko started the first game of the year against Dickinson State, while other freshmen Kelly Madison and TJ Okafor also saw over 20 minutes for the Mavericks. The Mavericks are picked to finished third in the confer-ence this year for the third year in a row, trailing behind Augustana and Winona State. Augustana features se-nior forward Cody Schilling, from Ellsworth, Minn., who has been tabbed as the NSIC Preseason Player of the Year. Concordia-St. Paul trails MSU in the preseason poll by just a few points, and MSU-Moor-head rounds out the top five. The Mavericks will be heading to Florida the day after Thanksgiving to partake in the Florida Southern Tournament, where they will go up against Armstrong Atlantic, and either

MARTIN LUTHER COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Knights lose one Holzhueter, counting on the other to stay in UMAC race

The MLC men finished last year in the league semifinals, the women have struggled of late.TIGE HUTCHESONstaff writer

As the Martin Luther Col-lege men’s basketball team waved goodbye to three-time All-Upper Midwest Athletic Conference guard Greg Hol-zhueter at the conclusion of the 2010-2011 season following a semi-finals loss in the UMAC Tournament, it seemed the Knights were losing a lot more than just a guaranteed 15 points per game. They had also seemingly lost their identity and sense of swagger. And if the Knights want to make another run at winning the conference and pushing fur-ther into the playoffs, they’re going to need Galen Holzhuet-er, Greg’s little brother and the 2010-2011 UMAC Freshman of the Year, to fill some pretty big shoes. “[Galen] will be asked to take on an even larger role on the offensive end for us this season,” said Martin Luther head men’s basketball coach James Unke. Galen won’t be the only Knight that’s asked to take on a larger role this season. Despite losing its top two scorers in Greg Holzhueter and Nathan Bauer (13.5 points per game), Martin Luther will bring back

much of last year’s frontcourt, including forwards Justin Eternick and Josh Danell and senior center Justin Danell. While it appears the Knights will have the size to make them a contender, the big question mark heading into the season is which one of Martin Luther’s young guards will break out and lead the backcourt. “We have improved our athleticism from last year. I believe our defense will be bet-ter because of that,” Unke said. “We have very young guards, but they are able to hit the long ball.” After experiencing just a brief taste of the postseason last season, the Knights enter the 2011-12 season ranked fifth in the UMAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Martin Luther women’s basketball team finds itself in a similar situation. The women were knocked out of the UMAC Tournament by top-seeded Minnesota-Mor-ris in the first round, cutting the season a little shorter than head coach Larry Czer and his team had hopes of and leaving them anxious to get back to the postseason this season. But while the men’s team

will rely on fairly untested, yet promising players to get them back to the UMAC Tourna-ment, the women’s team has the luxury of welcoming back one of the most established players in the league in three-time First-Team All-UMAC senior Erica Babinec. “Our strengths are our expe-rience and depth; our weakness is we sometimes lack consis-tent play on both ends of the court,” Czer said. The Knights bring back

their three leading scorers from last season in Babinec (18.8 points per game), Sarah Free (13.4 PPG) and Amanda Burk (11.6 PPG), and shouldn’t have any problem putting points on the board. But to take the next step in the postseason in 2011-12, before Babinec and Free gradu-ate and the rebuilding process may have to begin again, the Knights are going to have to be disciplined and put an empha-sis on team defense.

In both men’s and women’s basketball, teams like Minne-sota-Morris and Northwestern have called the shots in the UMAC for a very long time. But 2011-12 is another sea-son, and while both of Martin Luther’s basketball teams definitely have some weak-nesses and question marks, they also have a ton of talent and promise. Perhaps this is the year they can finally break the mold.

It’s been three years since the Minnesota State University, Mankato women’s basketball team defeated Franklin Pierce 103-94 to claim the school’s first-ever NCAA Women’s Bas-ketball Championship. And by the end of this sea-son, the Mavericks will official-ly have nothing left to remember it by other than the banner hang-ing high in Bresnan Arena. Only two players remain from the national championship team, and this year’s senior class of Jennie Noreen and Laura We-ber will be expected to step up and show what they’ve learned. “We’re expecting both Noreen and Laura Weber to be our leaders since they’re our seniors,” said Minnesota State women’s head basketball coach Pam Gohl. As any coach will tell you, it’s important to “strike while the iron is hot,” but the reality for the MSU women’s basketball team is that the iron has cooled drastically and is in danger of going completely cold unless the Mavericks can find a way to move on and get back to the NCAA Regional Tournament. In fact, in the eyes of oppos-ing Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference coaches, the magic

is completely gone. The Mavericks were picked to finish ninth in the NSIC Women’s Basketball Preseason Coaches’ Poll, and it seems everyone outside of Mankato thinks the MSU women’s bas-ketball team is still working on the rebuilding process. But even with Noreen, Weber, junior sensation Ali Wilkinson and a cast of what may seem like misfits, Coach Gohl believes the Mavericks are still a long ways from needing to rebuild, and that this season could be the year they get back to the postseason. “We were preseason picked No. 9, but we’re going to be way better than that,” Gohl said. “Usually the top four teams in our conference make regionals, and while we’d really like to be first just like everybody else, we really, really want to make regionals this year and chal-lenge every night to be there. I think there have been some early scores that indicate the confer-ence is kind of wide open and it’s really anybody’s game.” For that to happen, Wilkinson is going to need to finally vault herself into Player of the Year

MSU WRESTLING SEASON PREVIEW

Maverick grapplers boast solid mix of veterans and underclassmen this year

This season’s team figures to once again be amongst the NSIC elite, which it has grown accustomed to.

COLE KUKOWSKIstaff writer

The Minnesota State, Mankato wrestling team enters the season ranked No. 12 in the NCAA Division-II wrestling poll, and it looks to build on last season’s success. The 2010-11 season saw six wrestlers qualify for the national tournament and the Mavericks finished with a 9-5 overall record, finishing in fourth place in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with a 3-4 mark. “The rankings mean nothing in our eyes. The bottom line is we usually finish in the top 10 when it’s all said and done,” said head coach Jim Makovsky. “As much as I hope it ticks the guys off and motivates them, we just need to focus on our-selves and what we need to do.” Makovsky is entering his 19th season at MSU and owns an impressive 220-79-3 record. With 10 returning lettermen, MSU is looking to find the right balance of experience and youth this season. “We want 10 national champs, it all starts by having a target,” Makovsky said. “We want to be realistic, because you can’t be a national cham-pion until you qualify. At the same time athletes often max

out at their beliefs, so our guys try to be the best.” They also return four nation-al qualifiers, while bringing in eight freshmen to the program. “We want our freshmen No. 1 to not take crap from anybody and have some swagger and back it up. Once they prove they belong at this level, every chip they get from there builds integrity and confidence,” said Makovsky. Junior Jesse Westphal (145 lbs), sophomore Brendan Eichmann (174 lbs), senior Aaron Norgren (185 lbs) and junior Pat Mahan (197 lbs) are all poised to provide leadership after gaining national tourna-ment experience last season. “The perfect team dynamic is when the veterans set the cur-rent for the team and the young guys add spice and flavor, be-cause you don’t want them set-ting the pace,” Makovsky said. “Our upperclassmen are a quiet but great group and provide a good example of how to get the job done.” Westphal recorded a 15-18 record last season and placed fourth at the regional tourna-ment. Eichmann is ranked No.

contention. Wilkinson has been a double-double machine since averaging 12 points per game and 9.3 rebounds per game dur-ing her sophomore season. To reach their goal, the Mavericks are going to need the same type of consistency they’ve grown to count on from Wilkinson, but with even bigger numbers. “She’s very aggressive and has been even more aggressive so far this year,” Gohl said. “She has very high expectations of herself and she really put in a lot of work over the summer, so we’re expecting great things from her.”

Gohl will also ask a lot of the team’s five newcomers. Among them is Northern Iowa Area Community College transfer Jamelia Hudnell, who has al-ready established a reputation as an offensive game-changer. Hudnell is joined by fellow newcomers Jamie Bresnahan, who will be an immediate part of the rotation, and Eden Prairie standout Aubrey Davis, who has been penciled in and entrusted the Mavericks starting point guard job. After proving itself as one of the toughest conferences in all of Division-II recently, the NSIC doesn’t look any more forgiving

this season. With All-American candi-dates like Wayne State’s Ashley Arlen, Winona State’s Michelle McDonald and Minnesota State-Moorhead’s Angie Jetvig back for another season, the NSIC landscape might be tougher than ever. But time is running out for the Mavericks. With phrases like “rebuilding mode” and “youth movement” starting to echo, it’s now or never for Noreen and Weber to show us how much they remember from that magi-cal 2008-09 season.

MSU WRESTLING continued from 308 in the nation after finish-ing last season with a 23-20 record. “Returning after last year’s experience at the national tournament, I feel an even deeper drive to prove myself. Now it is not only to become an All-American, but also to prove that it was not a fluke last year,” said Eichmann. “We only have three guys return-ing that have ever been in the national tournament, but every year there is a good group of non-qualifiers that go to watch. That is a huge experience in itself.” Norgren won the regional tournament last season and placed fourth at the national tournament a season ago. He finished with a 28-10 record, which included a 13-1 mark in

dual meets. Mahan is ranked No. 5 in the nation after post-ing an 11-9 record last season and placing second in the region. Other key contributors this season figure to include juniors Robby Fisher (141 lbs), Nate Hayne and Alex Folk, along with senior Tel Todd (165 lbs). The NSIC will be com-petitive once again, with four teams currently ranked in the top-20 nationally. St. Cloud State, Upper Iowa and Au-gustana are ranked first, third and sixth, respectively, and join MSU in the national rank-ings. Makovsky notes this season’s team will require patience and that his starting lineup is written in pencil for a reason, because it will be built

off the evidence the players show on the mat as the season progresses. Norgren and sophomore Nate Haynes are also cur-rently out with a broken leg and hand, respectively. The Mavericks will make do until they return to health. MSU will play host to a pair of key conference show-downs late in the season that could decide the regular season conference race. Augustana comes to the Taylor Center on Jan. 28 and St. Cloud State on Feb. 26 in crucial conference matches. Other home matches include the opener against Waldorf tonight and MSU-Moorhead on Feb. 2.

BLC BBALL continued from 26

The women’s basketball team at Bethany is also com-prised of some talented players and has been picked to finish fifth in the UMAC this season. The squad is coached by Tiffany Young Klockziem, who is in her ninth season leading the Vikings. BLC is led by senior forward Jessica Englund, who led the team in scoring last season while averaging 17.5 points per game. Fellow senior Anna Cepek is the only other returning player who averaged double-digits in scoring last season, averaging 12.7 PPG.

Junior guard Amanda Ed-mison is also expected to start for the Vikings this season, and freshman forward Shelby Wiederhoeft should step in and carry a big load offensively for BLC in her rookie campaign. Like the men, the Bethany women have also challenged themselves in the non-confer-ence schedule and have started the season 0-3. The UMAC won’t be easy to win for either team, but both the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Bethany have plenty of reasons to be optimistic this season.
