TRIAD PRIDE MEN’S CHORUS

History of the Triad Pride Men’s Chorus

In late 1998, three men from Greensboro who had been driving to the Triangle area every week to sing with the nearest gay men’s chorus decided to take a chance. Hoping that there would be enough interest in and support for a gay men’s chorus in the Triad, they advertised for singers. Over twenty men showed up in January of 1999 from Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point and other area towns—all eager to join together in pride and in song. In June of that year TPMC held its first concert. Since then the chorus has doubled in size. Membership is open to gay and gay-affirming male singers. TPMC is a member of GALA Choruses, the International Association of Gay and Lesbian Choruses.

TPMC continues to grow, both musically and organizationally, enabling us to expand our mission. We continue to perform choral music to entertain, enlighten, and enrich while promoting equality and social justice for all people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity—fostering pride, understanding and acceptance.

For the 2007-2008 season we estimate that TPMC sang for 8,000 people in the Triad, with most of them being straight. Our music helps to put a positive and talented face on the GLBT community and through song presents our common struggle to a widening audience. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to those who know that the non-profit performing arts world has been challenged with grant funding and we continue to search for funding sources to be able to strengthen our organizational infrastructure, programs, and outreach. We remain so grateful to all our audience members, donors, sponsors, volunteers, staff, and singers for raising us up to new heights, ensuring our success. TPMC is a non-profit organization funded through donations from individuals, corporate sponsorships, and grants. We welcome your financial and in-kind tax-deductible contributions in support of the work of the chorus.

Join Usif you are a man who loves to sing, and to sing a wide variety of repertoire, we’d love to hear from you.TRY US OUT:Sit in on a regular rehearsal to see what goes on and meet us.Weekly rehearsals are on Tuesdays in Greensboro from 7:30 to 9:30 pm at the Greensboro Cultural Center in room 121, 200 North Davie Street.Rehearsals:For the December concert rehearsals begin in mid-August.For the June concert rehearsals begin in mid-January.READY TO JOIN - What you can expect...•A vocal placement is held with our artistic director, (August and January) to determine the range of your voice-tenor, bass or somewhere in between.•The primary requirements are to be able to hold a tune and follow the director’s instructions - This is not a test!!! Sing some scales and sing some simple exercises. - You don’t have to be a trained or exceptional singer - No preparation is needed for the vocal placement. - Previous music experience is a plus but not a requirement. - Can’t read music? Not a problem. A rehearsal CD for each part is produced to help you with memorization of the music.•Tuxedo and additional accessories required (depending on concert themes) which are purchased at your expense.• Each singer is expected to sell a minimum number of tickets to each concert and assist with yearly fund raisers.• Have FUN and meet new people!BUT SINGING IS NOT MY “THING”The chorus welcomes non-singing volunteers to do things like working the front of the house (usher, sell tickets or merchandise), help on various chorus committees and other activities. This is another great way to make a contribution to the success of TPMC ... and meet some pretty great guys. For more information on volunteering call us at 336-589-6267 or send email to [email protected]. We’ve got a spot just for you!
