LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Fairmount friends:

I spend a lot of time talking to people about how taking one of our classes can enrich their lives. I talk about how group art enhances creativity; how movement improves both muscle and memory; and how music lifts spirits and is the basis for endless individual expression. But, friends, I must tell you I had yet to practice what I preach, until a few days ago. Our faculty here is wonderful, always encouraging staff and volunteers to try new classes and join them. After several false starts, I finally found myself bringing my dance clothes to the Center (I had to dig them out of the bottom of my dresser, mind you), ready to try a barre stretch class with instructor Tuni Deignan and eight other women. I felt nervous but excited – could I keep up? Would I be able to follow her steps? What if I messed up and everyone saw me? Well, I did mess up. At least six times. And three times I fell out of form and secretly hoped she didn’t see me so I could rest on the mat for a second. Tuni pushed us hard but just when I thought “I am too old and out of shape for this” amazing things began to happen. I dug in and, buoyed by the people around me, I pushed through. I finished the class and afterwards Tuni said to me, “See? You were pretty good!” A pretty good from Tuni is like a million gold stars to me. I left feeling confident, excited, uplifted… and just a bit sore. I signed up for barre stretch (renamed for winter to Barretuni!) this winter. I will be here Thursdays at 6pm every week, braving the dark and cold and, more than anything, braving my own self-doubt to become the kind of person who doesn’t let her own worry or busy schedule keep her from feeling like she can try something new – well beyond her normal boundaries – and succeed. Join me for barre, join us for ceramics, join us for adult tap, join us for piano lessons. Just join us. Try something new and learn something new about yourself. After all, if I can do it, anyone can!

Warm regards for a wonderful holiday and a year full of new discoveries,

Jessica Leary AllenExecutive Director

2014 Winter Session: January 6-March 16 • Fairmount Center For the Arts4

Meet the StaffJessica Leary Allen, Executive DirectorJessica has been at Fairmount Center since July 2011 but first walked through the Fairmount doors more than 30 years ago as a Kinderdance student. Raised with a deep appreciation for the arts and the value of an art education, Jessica grew up playing the French horn and piano and tried her hand at everything from ceramics to musical theatre to creative writing. She earned her BS in journalism from Ohio University and returned there to complete her masters in public administration where she focused on non-profit administration.

Sarah Lenk, Office Manager Sarah graduated from the Ohio State University in 2007 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art. She currently lives with her husband Alex, a chef, and their goldendoodle puppy, Louie, in Chesterland. At 29, she still does not know what she wants to do when she is “grown up” but knows it has to do with her favorite thing, art. In her spare time, Sarah loves to go camping with friends, watch movies and work in her art studio. Her least favorite things are cleaning up after her loving husband, running and tapioca. She likes to keep an open mind and will try anything once.

Her favorite quote is: Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity

of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary.

- Cecil Beaton

Marilyn Vlah, Administrative Assistant “I have been involved in the non-profit world a good part of my working life. I worked in non-profit prior to Fairmount and find that being at Fairmount is quite special! My children took various classes when they were young so I knew of Fairmount prior to my employment. My daughter is in the arts today so being here must have stuck” says Marilyn. Marilyn is now retired but staying home is not her thing. She believes a passion for what you do is #1 in life. Number #2…a good sense of humor.

Melanie Reda, Office Assistant Melanie started working last summer at the Fairmount Center. Though her siblings claimed all of the artistic talent in her family, she still has a strong appreciation for the talents that others are able to foster through dance, music and art. Melanie was born and raised on the east side of Cleveland and despite some adventures in Australia and Guatemala, she keeps coming back. After graduating from Ohio Northern University with a BS in International Business and Economics, she went on to continue her master’s studies at Southern New Hampshire University in Community Economic Development. After 2 years living in Guatemala as a Peace Corps Volunteer, Melanie is also fluent in Spanish. She hopes to join the Spanish dance class as soon as she can find the time in her crazy schedule.

Fairmount Dance Theatre (FDT)FEATUREd TEAChER JULIE hARMONDance Instructor and Director Julie Anna Harmon is so happy to be a part of the Fairmount family and share her love of dance with all of her students. “Every opportunity I’ve had in my dance training has helped

shape who I am as a teacher today.” Julie began her dance training at a young age under the direction of Richard Earley in Cambridge, Ohio and continued her training at the School of Canton Ballet as a member of the Canton Ballet Company. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from the University of Akron and has danced professionally with Ballet Theatre of Ohio and as a guest artist with Northern California Ballet. Julie started teaching at Fairmount six years ago. After subbing for a few classes, she started teaching on a regular basis, became a Co-Director of the Fairmount Dance Theatre (FDT) program and finally the Director of FDT in 2011. What does Julie like most about being a teacher? “Seeing my students turn into the people they are going to be inside the studio and out. Sometimes I get a little choked up watching my students during a performance, first of all because I’m proud of all their accomplishments but also because I remember all of the feelings that being part of a performance creates and I know that the dancers who are there in that moment are going to cherish it forever.”

FEATUREd TEAChER TUNI dEIGNAN

While Tuni is new to Fairmount Center and the Cleveland area, she is a mid-west girl. Of her early childhood years in Minneapolis, she recalls starting ballet and dance theatre ‘as a young -un’ only about eight years old. By her late teens, she was living in Chicago, learning and performing with the

Gus Giordance Chicago Dance Company. Tuni says “I was always 1000% on stage, and I had an incredible young career. I was really fortunate and didn’t realize how fortunate ‘til much later.” She continued on a professional trajectory, performing at her peak…. until “I blew my knee out in my late 20’s and it cut-short my dream.” Tuni is very involved with and grateful for her family of five children, ages 9 to 22 years old. She values the time she had to devote to raising her children; and, says they learned from each other. No longer a professional dancer, Tuni got involved in various forms of fitness….yoga, pilates and some newer, trendier forms BeMoved and Barre Stretch technique. “I read constantly. Woman-oriented fitness interests me and especially the work of pioneers Lotte Berk, Martha Graham and Joseph Pilates. “There is something so special about moving our bodies at any age…..and, when you add music, to me it’s pure joy. I’ve always felt this way” says Tuni.

FEATURE STUdENTMIKE MCENROE Mike has been a student at Fairmount Center for the Arts for 4 years and takes the Magic of Watercolor with Michael Prunty on Monday evenings. Along with Mr. Prunty and the staff being a few things he loves about Fairmount, the location is also one of his favorite things. “My wife and daughter learned dance here 20-25 years ago!” Mr. McEnroe is retired and spends his time painting, drawing and developing composition skills learned in class. His favorite thing to do is to capture interesting scenes in a way that makes it interesting and stimulating to others. Mr. McEnroe was accepted into the 37th Annual Fairmount Art Exhibtion earlier this year with one of his stunning watercolor pieces. He wasn’t, however, an artist until later in life. “I started drawing and painting at 55 years old. I was discouraged by elementary school art teachers who said I had no aptitude for art. Anyone can learn. A single drawing once a day will produce great results someday. Listen to yourself and to those that encourage you. Keep at it! You’ll get there!”

Featured TeacherdAvId FULLERVoice Instructor, Music Department DirectorGrowing up the son of Rev. Clarence Fuller in a suburb of Boston, David was inspired by the wonderful soloists his dad brought to sing in church.

His clarinet teacher and junior choir director inspired him, and in 1969, he auditioned and was selected for a TV show choir and orchestra, the “Greater Bostonians” (similar to today’s TV show “Glee”). College teachers took notice of his bass-baritone voice and encouraged him. Then, a “defining” period came when he made the finals of the competitive New England Regional Metropolitan Opera audition. After that, he appeared with the Santa Fe Opera Company. For these successes, David was written up as “one of the glittering new artists of the future.” In 1995, after a series of career and family lifestyle shifts, David, wife Susan, and their children moved back to Susan’s hometown, Burton. David joined Fairmount as its first voice teacher and was given the opportunity to build a Children’s Choir. Through the years, he has proven his unique talent and value in many ways, including endless hours of volunteer help to Fairmount by both David and Susan. In 2012, he was named FCA Music Director. He’s an out-of-the-box thinker and teacher who says early years in sales help him get to know his students and how they think so he can tailor his approach to connect with each student. David truly believes music “gives you confidence and lifts you higher.”

DAVID FULLER, DirectorOur private lessons are designed for both beginners and experienced music lovers. Discover how music can become a unique and irreplaceable part of your life – observe a lesson with your child. Make music education a priority for yourself, your child,

and for humanity. According to a study by College Board in 2010, students who took music lessons for four years or more scored an average of 100 points higher on the SATs than students who did not play a musical instrument. In addition, studying music improves recall and retention of verbal information, advances math achievement and boosts reading and language arts skills. According to research by Mitchell Gaynor M.D. (Sounds of Healing), music also has therapeutic physical effects, including reduced anxiety, heart and respiratory rates, reduced cardiac complications, lowered blood pressure, and increased immune responses. So, what are you waiting for? Call 440.338.3171 for music lessons today!
