The Awards

‘Counterpoint’ by Jason EllisCommissioned by TileStyle and theMcNaughton Family in memory of Jim McNaughton, this perpetualaward will be presented each year to a company for best practice in a commissioning relationship.

Counterpoint was sculpted by JasonEllis in Kilkenny Limestone on a base of white marble, designed to convey theprinciples of a successful collaboration. The sculpture takes the simple idea oftwo separate entities that are heldtogether in a symbiotic and mutuallybeneficial relationship. The two sectionsrely on one another to create the form, which appears to be made from separateslabs of stone but are in fact carved from the one block.

Jason Ellis is a well-known sculptureconservator who turned to producinghis own work, which he now doesexclusively. His work is represented in the State Art Collection, and in the collections of Bank of Ireland andIIB. He recently completed a majorcommission for the UCD BelfieldCampus, which stands over seven metres high.

Dublin Port Company & Fire Station Artists’ StudiosDublin Port Company’s internationallinks, it’s industrial history and thediversity of the communities thatinhabit the port area, offered the Portgreat potential for the development ofan innovative art project, and led to a collaboration with Fire Station Artists’Studios on the public art project 100Flowers to Bloom in 2004. Dublin PortCompany’s aim with the partnershipwas to engage with its local communityand have a visual impact on its largelyindustrial environment.

In 2005 and 2006, Liverpool basedartist David Jacques worked withchildren from St Joseph’s NationalSchool in East Wall on an extensivestudy of the alien or non-native plantswithin the port landscape, which led to the production of iconic banners for the port area. Following its success, the project culminated with thepublication of the book 100 Flowers to Bloom by David Jacques in 2007.

The book is an encyclopaedia of non-native plants in Ireland according to children from St. Joseph’s. It traces thevarious stages of the public art project, from the initial research stage anddetailed drawings completed by thechildren, through to the more publicmanifestation of silk embroideries andhand painted banners which were sited at Dublin Port, St. Joseph’s Schooland around East Wall.

Dublin Port Company and FireStation Artists’ Studios’ public artcollaboration and the resultingpublication of 100 Flowers to Bloomdemonstrates how a private companyand an arts organisation cansuccessfully commission and documentan innovative and socially responsiblepublic art project that engages in a meaningful way with the localcommunity and a broad spectrum ofthe company’s stakeholders.

Clem Jacob Hire Ireland & Red Kettle Theatre CompanySince opening for business in 2006,Clem Jacob Hire has become one of theleading hire companies in the SouthEast of Ireland. As Managing DirectorClem Jacob has long held the belief thatcreativity and imagination should beencouraged and supported, the companyhas a policy that includes sponsorshipin-kind of the arts in Waterford. Thispolicy has put considerable resources atthe disposal of many groups in the city.

Red Kettle Theatre Company andClem Jacob Hire collaborated on the large-scale theatrical production ofRussell Hoban’s Ridley Walker. This is to date the biggest productionever undertaken by Red Kettle TheatreCompany with a cast of 36 and a livepercussion band.

Red Kettle entered the project with notmuch more than a cast and a field, and Clem Jacob Hire’s sponsorship in-kind provided a variety of equipmentfrom diggers, generators, lights andtoilets to marquees and audienceseating for a period of four weeks whichcovered the rehearsals and duration of the performance.

The relationship between bothpartners was a highly developed one, with hands-on participation by theClem Jacob team and continuous on-site advice and guidance for the Red Kettle production team. Clem Jacob Hire’s sponsorship in-kindis an excellent model of how a Small toMedium Enterprise can removesignificant overheads from an artsorganisation and enable the staging oflarge-scale artistic productions.
