  • Wiper Systems Configuringtheoptimumwipersystemforavehiclerequiresthepropermotor,linkage,armsandblades.Attentionmustbefocusedonthecorrectapplicationofthesepartstoensurethatarobustyetcost-effectivesystemisachieved.Thefollowinginformationwillassistindeterminingsystemrequirements,selectingcomponentsandconfiguringthesystem.

    Step1:DefinetheSweepPatternEverythingstartswiththesweeppattern.Inordertodevelopthemostappropriatepattern,inputfrompersonsknowledgeableaboutwherethevehicleoperatorneedstoseemustbeutilized.Thesweeppatternisthencreated,definingthesweepangle,armconfigurationandbladelength.Alwaysallowanadditional5%ofthenominalsweepangleon each sideofthepatternforgrowthofthewipeangle(duetowearandinstallationtolerancesofwiperarms).Thiswillpreventcollisionsbetweenthewiperbladeandwindowframeormolding.Alsomakesureinmultiplearmsystemsthattherecannotbeanycollisionsbetweenadjacentwiperblades.Oncethesweeppatternisestablished,thenextstepisdeterminingthepropermotorsizetorunthesystem.

    Step2:SelectthepropersizemotorThewipermotormusthavesufficienttorquetomovethewiperarms/bladesunderworstcaseconditions.Amotorwhichisunder-sizedwilloverheatandtripitsthermoswitch,renderingthewiperstemporarilyinoperative.Anover-sizedmotoraddsunnecessarycostandrequiresstronger,costliersystemcomponentstohandlethehighermotorstalltorque.Thefollowingformulahasbeenusedsuccessfullytodeterminepropermotorsize*.

    Motor TorqueismeasuredinNm,NewtonMetersArm LengthismeasuredinMetersArm Tip ForceismeasuredinNewtons(refertothearmdrawing)sinisatrigonometricfunctiononscientificcalculatorsandwillyieldanumberbetween0and1

    Note:thisformulaassumesthatthewiperlinkage(tobedesignedinthenextstep)hassymmetricalforceanglesbetweenlinkandpivotleverandisplanarwithin10degrees.

    Calculatetherequiredmotortorqueforeachwiperarmandtotalformultiplearmsystems.Selectamotorthathas10%to15%moretorqueonlowspeedthanthecalculation.Thisensuresthatthemotorwillnotstall(andthusstop)underadverseconditions.

    *forsmallsystemswheretheWexcooscillatingmotor,WWF,istobeused,checktheguidelinesformaximumarm/bladelengthsforeachwipeangle.Nomotor/linkagecalculationsarerequired.

    Thelinkagecomponentsmustnowbeselectedtoproducetherequiredwipeangle(s)andallowthepivot(s)tobelocatedinthevehicletoproducetherequiredsweeppattern.Wipeangleisdeterminedbytheratioofthemotorcranklengthtothepivotleverlength.Itiscustomarytoeitherstartwithaknownmotorcrankandfindthecorrespondingpivottoobtainthedesiredwipeangleorviceversa.Thefollowingformulawillassistyoutoselectappropriateparts

    Thehousinglengthrequirementofthepivotassemblymustalsobedetermined.Generallyspeaking,apivotassemblywillneedtopassthroughthevehicleouterskinandanystructureinbetween.Thethreadedportionofthepivothousingalsoneedstoextendbeyondthevehicleskinsothatthereissufficientlengthtoinstallthemountingnutandwasherandanyprotectivecap.Foranygivenpivot,thereisasmallrangeofprotrusionlengthsthatwillworkforagivenapplication.DiagramsdepictingprotrusionlengthsofaPivotareshownbelow.Ifapivotistoolongandanappropriateshorteronecannotbefound,thenaspacerwillneedtobeadded.Refertothepivotandpivothardwaredrawingsinthiscatalogtodeterminethepropercombinationofparts.Note:spacersareacustomerresponsibility.

    Thelastlinkagecomponentrequiredistheconnectinglink.Thepivotlocationinthevehicleisdictatedbythepreviouslygeneratedsweeppattern.Alinklengthmustbeselectedinordertofinalizethemotorlocation.Generally,amotorwillbelocatedtotheleftorrightofthepivotandthenslightlyupordown.Distancesaremeasuredfromthepivotshaftcentertothemotoroutputshaftcenter.Thefollowingassumesthistypicalscenario.

    Measurehorizontallyleftorrightofthepivotbyexactlythelengthoftheconnectinglink.Then

    Step4:Selectarmandblade

    Wiper System

    Thegeneralarmconfigurationshouldbeknownbasedonstep1above.However,wiperbladesaredesignedtooperatewithaspecificrangeofarmtipforce.Ifthearmhasexcessivetipforce,thebladewillbesquasheddownandlayonitsside,causingsmearingandincreasingpermanentsetoftherubberinsert.Insufficienttipforcewillnotholdthebladedownproperlyagainsttheglassandtherewillbemissedareasinthesweeppattern.Thefollowingaregeneralrecommendations;
