Windshield Survey

OSWEGO COUNTY, NY

This windshield survey covers much of Oswego County, NY. My granddaughters took pictures as we drove throughout the county. Our photos include newer housing in Pulaski, NY and older housing in the outskirts of Fulton, NY. There were more well-kept houses than run-down houses. Roads and bridges are well-maintained throughout the county. Steam from the three mile island nuclear plant was the only pollution noted. The county has many open spaces with well maintained parks in abundance. Schools appear well maintained including Oswego State University. Shopping areas include both chain stores as well as local businesses. Farmer’s markets are also scattered throughout this county. No gangs were observed. Crime is low in this county as compared to neighboring Onondaga County.

Evaluation:This is a primarily rural county with several small

towns dispersed throughout. Agriculture is quite evident with small farms in abundance. Many empty buildings were noted throughout the downtown areas of all the small towns. There are 3 homecare agencies for this county but only 1 hospital. Hospice also has a presence. Streets in the towns are well lit and well maintained. Most run down houses are well outside of towns, set in more rural areas. Overall this is a fairly prosperous area. People were observed walking, jogging, shopping, driving and school busses were aplenty. Public transportation was observed in several areas. Low crime adds to the sense of safety in the area. Walmart stores were found in 4 areas of the county and parking lots were extremely busy.
