Installation Lab

Welcome to the Windows Server 2008 installation lab. During this lab we will try to

expose you to a few technologies that you may not have worked with before but willencounter when you enter the world of ! auditing. Some of these technologies like

virtual machine technology are really slick"

!he purpose of this lab is#

$. %et your hands dirty installing a server operating system.

2. &rovide a platform for our storage lab where we are going to build '(Darrays.

). &rovide a platform for our *yS+, Server.

-. %et some exposure to virtual machine technology.. /ave fun in a geeky sort of way1.

We will be working in teams of two. ou will work with this same person on a

number of the upcoming labs. f one of the team members has more hands3onexperience with technologies like this4 would ask that the team member with less

hands3on experience drive they get the mouse and keyboard1 and that their partner

help guide them through the lab.

n the first part of the lab you will create a virtual machine. ( virtual machine is very

much like a physical machine however it doesn5t have any physical hardware. (ll ofthe physical hardware is emulated via software. !he virtual machine4 also known as a

6%uest7 or 6%uest perating System7 runs in a window as an application on another

physical machine known as the 6/ost7 or 6/ost perating System7. !he virtualmachine you create will have a virtual 9&:4 virtual memory4 virtual hard drives4 and

a virtual network card. !o the operating system that we install in this virtual

machine4 all of these resources will appear to be real but we all know that they are

simply virtual4 emulated by software.

. Select 69ustom7 when prompted for the type of configuration you want and then

click 6;ext7 on the 6Welcome to the ;ew =irtual *achine Wi>ard7 dialog box.

?. (ccept the defaults for compatability and click 6;ext7.

select 6 will install the operating system later.7 and press 6;ext7.

8. Select 6*icrosoft Windows7 as the guest operating system and specify 6WindowsServer Server 2008 '2 x?-7 as the version. &ress 6;ext7 to continue.

B. %ive your machine a uniCue name and press 6;ext7. (ll of the =*s we create

will need a uniCue name. ;ote the location where the machine will be created.

$0. %ive your =* two virtual processors and press 6;ext7.

Phase 2 Installing Windows Server

$. our instructor will either give you a D=D which you will put into the D=Dreader on the host machine or will direct you on how to fool the =* into thinking

that a D=D has been inserted by pointing the virtual D=D at a backup file .S1of the Windows Server installation D=D. nce you have done this4 power on

your =* by pressing the big green arrow.

2. ou will see the =* power on 6Windows Setup7 will begin loading files.

8. ou only have one virtual hard drive so select that and press 6;ext7.

B. Sit back and wait while Windows is installedFyour =* may restart a few times

as part of the installation process.

$0. ou must set a password for the local (dministrator account. &lease use the

password 6&assword$2)7. &ress 6G7 to set the password.

$$. !here will be a few annoying windows that pop up. 9lick the 6Do not show this

window at logon7 and close the window out so it stops annoying you.

$). !he 6=*ware !ools7 are a collection of drivers which make everything from the

virtual mouse to the virtual monitor run smoother and interact cleaner with the

host operating system. nstall the =*ware !ools by using the menu options=*Fnstall =*ware tools. t will take a minute for the installation tool to start

but you should see the following. &lease single click on the installation to to start

the installation of =*ware tools.

$-. 9lick 6;ext7 to start the installation of the =*ware !ools.

$. Select 6!ypical7 for the Setup !ype and click 6;ext7..

$?. 9lick 6nstall7 and sit back while the =*ware !ools are installed.

$8. our system will need to be restarted to activate the =*ware tools so select

6es7 to restart your system.

$B. (fter your system restarts4 login to your system and tinker around a bit. &leasenote4 if you press HctrlIJHaltIJHdelI as you normally would to login to a

Windows server4 the host does not know if this key seCuence should be procesed

by the host or by the guest. When you would like to send a HctrlIJHaltIJHdelI

to the guest4 you actually send a HctrlIJHaltIJHinsertI instead. !his is tough toget used to.

20. *ake sure you always shutdown your server gracefully. f you don5t4 you maycorrupt your system.
