Windows XP Basics General Information

All new Machines are equipped with the Windows XP operating system. The machines were imaged with the classic view of Windows. You will learn how to change your computer start menu and desktop to have the Windows XP look.

Windows XP combines a bright, fresh new look with a simple-to-use design. The desktop and taskbar are less cluttered. The Start menu provides easier access to your programs. And there are more options for customizing your desktop environment.

• My Computer: Lets you view all the contents of your computer including drives, folders, files, network drives and printers.

• Recycle Bin: The recycle bin contains the files and folders that you have deleted. Files that you will no longer need, allowing you to recover them if necessary. However, once they are removed from the

recycle bin they are permanently deleted. You should make sure you do not delete a file that Windows or other programs require to operate.

• My Network Places: You can use My Network Places to browse through the information available on your network. Shows shortcuts to websites, networked computers, and ftp sites.

• Taskbar: Displays a button for each open window on your screen. You can use these buttons to switch between the open windows. Open programs appear as tabs in the taskbar. Right click on the taskbar to add toolbar functionality.

• Start Button: Gives you quick access to programs, files, and Windows help and support.

Click on the start menu. Scroll up to settings, control panel. Click on Taskbar and Start menu.

or on other drives. You can use files with the following extensions: .bmp, .gif, .jpg, .dib, .png, or .htm. In the Position list, click Center, Tile, or Stretch to define how your picture will be displayed, and then click OK or Apply.

• If you want to use a picture from a Web site, on the site, right-click the image, and then click Set as Desktop Background.

• To see a colored background you must select none from the Background drop-down menu. Also, if you choose an .htm document as your background picture, the Position options are unavailable; instead, the .htm document automatically stretches to fill the entire background.

Screen Saver

• Click Screen Saver Tab. • Using the drop down arrow under Screen Saver select a screen saver. • After you select a screen saver, it will automatically start when your

computer is idle for the number of minutes specified in Wait. • To clear the screen saver after it has started, move your mouse or

press any key. • To view possible setting options for a particular screen saver, click

Settings on the screen saver tab. • Click Preview to see how the selected screen saver will appear on

your monitor. Move your mouse or press any key to end the preview. Power Save

• Click on the Power button. In the Power Systems Properties box use the drop down arrows in the setting for Always ON power scheme. Select Never in each box: turn off monitor; turn off hard disks, system standby.

• Click OK to save. • In the Display properties box, Click OK.

: The 3 ½ Floppy disk drive is a removable disk that stores information magnetically. You can use a floppy disk to exchange information between computers, or to make a backup of your files. CD-R: A CD-R drive allows you to permanently record data on CD-R Disc. You cannot erase the contents of a CD-R disc. CD-RW Drive: A CD-RW (Compact Disc Recordable) drive allows you to record data on CD-RW or CD-R discs. You can erase the contents of a CD-RW (Compact Disc ReWritable) drive in order to copy new data to the disc. Network Drives: A network allows you to work with information stored on other computers on the network. A network drive is set up for you to share information used by individuals working together on a project and need to access the same files. Scanners and Cameras: Scanners and Cameras in Control Panel enables you to install scanners, digital still cameras, digital video cameras, and other image-capturing devices.

Hard Disk Drives: The Hard disk drive provides a storage area for files, folders and programs on your computer.
