Introducing

codenamed Threshold

Developed by Microsoft

First presented in April 2014 at the Build Conference

scheduled to be released in late 2015

FREE upgrades to Windows 10

Goal of Windows 10 is to unify the Windows PC, Windows Phone, Windows Embedded and Xbox One product families, Surface Hub and HoloLens, etc.

Why did Microsoft call it Windows 10 not Windows 9?

“We know, based on the product that’s coming, and just how different our approach will be overall, it wouldn’t be right to call it Windows 9.”

- Terry Myerson , windows chief

Development Started In December 2013

Goals for Threshold was to create a unified application platform and development toolkit for Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox One (which all use a similar Windows NT kernel).

Threshold was officially unveiled during a media event on September 30, 2014, under the name Windows 10

Windows 10 would be Microsoft’s "most comprehensive platform ever," providing a single, unified platform for desktop computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and all-in-one devices.

consumer-oriented features were presented during another media event held on January 21, 2015

Additional information surrounding Windows 10 is expected to be announced during Build 2015.

About Windows Technical PreviewTech Preview is the first pre-release build of the next version of Windows.

Tech preview is different from previous releases in four key ways:

1. Instead of a full build, this preview is a subset of what’s to come.

2. Microsoft releasing bits at earlier stages of the development process.

3. With the participation of more users around the world, Microsoft expecting the most robust set of feedback.

4. We’re delivering updates in an ongoing cycle of development-feedback-refinement, making development a joint effort between developers and users.

Windows Technical Preview - How it works

Tech Preview is a two-stage process.

User interface and desktop

Windows 10’s user interface changes its behavior depending on the type of device being used and available input methods.

Continuum

Continuum handles transitions between interface modes on convertible laptops and tablets with docking keyboards.

Continuum Mode :- On 2in1 devices, Windows 10 will move easily between keyboard/mouse and touch/tablet as it detects the transition and conveniently switches to the new mode.

If you remove the keyboard/mouse, a notification will pop up from the task bar at the bottom, asking if you want to activate Tablet mode.

Place your tablet into the keyboard again, and you’ll receive the same prompt, this time asking if you want to exit Tablet mode.

Start menu

more personal and more organized

when click on the Start button at the bottom left of the screen, you get two panels side by side, with the left column showing pinned, recently added and most-used apps.

Love it? Pin itPin apps to Start to show live updates on what’s happening in your world, like new email, your next appointment, or the weekend weather.

The right column features a selection of live tiles that you can customize, resize and reorganize.

Go full screenWe can have the Start Menu expand to full screen whenever we want.

The power button is right at the top of Start. Want to sign out of your PC, switch accounts, or change your account picture? Just select your name in the upper-left corner of Start.

Virtual Desktops

Instead of having multiple windows open on top of each other on one desktop, you can set up a whole other virtual desktop for those programs to reside in.

• A new Multiple Desktops feature lets you run another set of windows as if on another screen.

• New desktops can be added by either pressing Windows Tab or clicking the new Task View button.

• Microsoft also updated its Snap View multitasking feature to let you windows to the four corners of your screen.

Notifications

It collects alerts from your device from all your apps, similar to the notifications drawers like in our smartphones.

• Windows 10 will provide a new way to look at all your notifications in one place.

Command Prompt

Copy and Paste and Ctrl/Shift cursor based character selection now available. The most obvious benefit of this is that you can copy and paste complicated command instructions from the web straight into the prompt

Cortana

One of the biggest new additions to Windows 10 is Cortana, which is a glorified voice search and personal assistant.

• Cortana make it easier for you to interact with your device without lifting a finger.

First launched on Windows Phone as a rival to Siri and Google Voice.

A universal search box Cortana is located alongside the Start and Task View buttons.

Search your PC and the web at the same time.

It provides context aware search and will provide alerts based on things like upcoming world events, appointments in your calendar and what’s happening to the traffic nearby.

Project Spartan browser

A new web experience for Windows 10 – Code-named “Project Spartan,” the next generation browser was built with greater interoperability, reliability and discoverability, with a new look and feel built just for Windows 10.

• Internet Explorer will be replaced by the newly announced Project Spartan.

New features include PDF support, a reading mode that improves the layout of long articles, and a new note taking feature.

Reading view that is distraction free, displaying the article in a simplified layout for a great reading experience for Web articles online and offline

Project Spartan lets you scribble on any page and share your comments with your friends through social networks.

Project Spartan will feature Cortana support within the browser, so she can pull contextual information from the sites

Integration of Cortana for finding and doing things online faster.

The new Microsoft browser is going to be powered by a new rendering engine, EdgeHTML.dll. Windows 10 already has it integrated, and it will be separate from Trident (MSHTML.dll) that powered Internet Explorer for decades.

"Project Spartan´s" EdgeHTML engine offers drastically improved JavaScript performance.

It uses the WebGL API for 2D and 3D graphics more efficiently than Google Chrome 41 and Mozilla Firefox 36.0.1

Universal Apps

Apps are distributed through a single store across all platforms and feature an adaptive user interface based on the method of interaction.

Universal Apps will also be capable of synchronizing settings, credentials and notifications across devices.

Windows 10 Universal Apps are Windows Runtime software which shares a common codebases with a single SDK and can be deployed across desktop PCs, mobile (including tablets and phones), Xbox, Surface Hub, Windows Holographic, etc.

Multimedia and gaming Windows 10 will provide heavier

integration with the Xbox ecosystem

Xbox on Windows 10 lets gamers access the best of the expansive Xbox Live gaming network on both Windows 10 PCs and Xbox One

Windows 10 will also allow users to control and play games from an Xbox One console over a local network.
