Friday, 10th June - Cluedo Club goes Regal

The Year 4 and 5 children who attend Cluedo

Club enjoyed activities with a regal theme as

they celebrated Queen Elizabeth's 90th birthday.

The children hunted for Corgis in a maze, learnt

how to draw the Queen's Guard and designed up

to date stamps to celebrate the special occasion.

The children used their literary skills to write

postcards following their 'visit to the Palace' as

well as poems about the Queen. As you can see

from the photograph, a very special visitor was

in attendance!

about Lunches:

Please

important to

many products

may contain a

Thank you for

your help in this

matter. Please

do not include

Following the Transition meeting for Parents and Carers of children in Year 3, the children had the opportunity to

discuss transition with Year 4. Biba Sahi, Beck Taylor and Lily Gifford performed their speeches which they had

already delivered in the meeting. The Year 3 children asked Year 4

questions they had prepared. This was a

really worthwhile experience for the Year 3

children and we hope it has reassured them

that they are ready for their next challenge!

U10 Tennis Sussex Tennis Championships

Mrs Mack and I were lucky enough to take the U10 tennis team to the Sussex Championships held at

Bede's school in Hailsham. The team consisted of Jayden Hobbs, Alexander Riley, Noah Faulkner-Weale,

Mia Hobbs (Year 3), Alfie White, Harvey Underwood, Dani Chalmers and Caitlin Cheal. The tournament

was a round Robin singles and doubles event with the top two teams playing a second time to decide

first and second place. It was a lovely sunny day with hardly any wind, perfect Wimbledon conditions!

Bede's as always were a tough opposition but although Mia and Noah both lost their first singles matches they played

exceptionally well and beat the 3rd and 4th seeded players in the doubles 5-7. Jayden and Alex were a lethal combination

and played some fantastic tennis both in their singles matches and as a doubles pair. They communicated well and used

the space on the court to create winning opportunities. The B team really impressed us with their effort and determination.

Alfie and Harvey ran down every point and improved so much throughout the tournament. They never gave up and both

played very close matches against Bede's C team.

Caitlin and Dani also played exceptionally well and the improvement was noted from start to end. After some initial nerves,

they settled into a rhythm and both won their singles matches against Bede's C team as well as winning their doubles 7-6 in a

nail biting finish.

All of the children need to be commended for their good sportsmanship and for representing Windlesham School so well.

The B team won the sportsmanship award and were awarded with prizes at the end of the tournament. The A team went on

to play in the final and came second to Bede's A team

and came home with Silver medals.

SWIMMING GALA AT SHOREHAM COLLEGE

It was a special day for me as I was chosen to represent the school in a

swimming gala. The team went by minibus to Shoreham College to

swim in their outdoor pool. We didn't have a warm up but we didn't

need it as we went into an early lead, winning most of the backstroke

races. Shoreham had a slight advantage in the breaststroke races, but

Windlesham were stronger in the freestyle races. The relays were very

competitive and finished even. Windlesham won the gala by 10 points. My favourite

swimmers were Mia Lawden Yr 6, Harry Tidey Yr 5, Max Slater Yr 4 and Eli Wolfe-Naughton Yr 3. Reporter: Jayden Hobbs Yr 5.

Congratulations to the school swimming team who beat Shoreham College in a very

competitive and exciting Swimming Gala this week.

Team: Eli Wolfe-Naughton, Zach Hootman, Ra Healy, Max Slater, Biba Sahi, Evie Flack, Ollie

Jackson, Elizabeth Rimmer-Leeming, Truly Wellock, Hannah Lind, Sasha Hewitt, Caitlin Cheal,

Rosa Flack, Bella Daiches, Alexander Riley, Harry Tidey, Jayden Hobbs, Luke Healy, Mia

Lawden, Fleur Connolly, Jai Sahi and Scarlett O'Callaghan.

Year 3 & 4 Cricket vs Shoreham College

The Year 3 and 4 cricket team played at Shoreham College for the

second time this term, and it was extremely clear for everyone to see the

progress the team have made in such a short time. Our bowling was much

more accurate, running between the wickets was much more decisive,

fielding was more consistent and our batting much stronger. Akim Ntwari,

Christian O'Callaghan and Michael Munday (who took a brilliant catch),

made their debuts for the team and did extremely well. Thady White struck a magnificent 6

and Eli Wolfe-Naughton clean bowled Shoreham’s star batsman. Will Gardner bowled with

exceptional speed for his age, Ted Wiskar showed he is an all rounder who can bat, bowl and

field with equal skill, Samuel Rowney has an excellent batting technique for his age, Ra Healy

struck the ball with eloquent timing and Harry Underwood bowled his leg breakers with skill

beyond his years.

An excellent effort from everyone which augurs well for the future.

Windlesham School dedicated Wednesday, 15th June to Maths Day. This year’s theme was

Angles and the day commenced with a customary Fancy Dress Parade in the morning. We would like to thank

all the children for dressing up in costume which linked wonderfully to the theme. The

teachers embraced a number of ways in which to follow the theme too, for example Mrs Freeman and

Mrs Mack seen below! Well done to everyone for their fantastic effort.

Author Visit from Avril McDonald

Windlesham School News

After suffering her first panic attack at 8 years old (when

little was known about anxiety disorders), Avril felt very

alone and scared. It was only years later when her sister

(who was training to be a nurse) came home with some

academic material, which explained everything she'd

felt. She was so relieved to find that there were real

'names' for what she suffered from and ways to help

manage it.

This gave her an insatiable curiosity about the mind-

body connection so she learnt a lot of strategies such as

'Neuro Linguistic Programming' and 'Cognitive

Behavioural Therapy' to manage her anxiety disorders.

When her daughter had a nightmare, managing it

came very easily to her through the strategies she had

learnt managing her own anxiety. This was the 'Eureka'

moment when Avril decided that she wanted to help

other children manage tough emotions and reach their

potential through the magic of poetry and

storytelling. She founded www.feelbrave.com and wrote the Feel Brave Series of books (Little stories about big

feelings). She also set up the charitable arm www.friendsoffeelbrave.com with the vision to give all children access to these

tools.

Avril visited Windlesham School on Thursday,16th June and shared the stories and 'Feel Brave exercises' with staff and

children. This really was a very special morning. We are delighted that Avril and her father were able to join in with our

annual Reading celebration. Mrs England, one of our School Governors, also enjoyed meeting Avril and being part of this

event. Avril managed to present these very important themes in a child-friendly way to the Lower School children and took

time to speak with parents.

Waterstones supported the event and the Feel Brave Books can be found in the children's section in most stores. We are

always grateful for the advice and book recommendations given to us by Waterstones. This makes it possible for us to

provide a range of reading materials for our children. Meeting and working with Avril has been such a treat for our school.

She has a real gift.

Read Write Inc Celebration

Windlesham School News

The children in Reception and Year 1 had a very successful Read Write Inc Celebration on Thursday,16th June.

Parents and Carers joined us in the hall to hear about the importance of reading and to have the chance to peruse a

wide selection of books from both Waterstones bookshop and our visiting author, Avril McDonald.

Avril introduced the themes of her books from the ‘Feel Brave’ series, where children can explore their emotions

through the stories of Winston wolf and his friends.

All the children received certificates and were thrilled to share their work with their parents during the workshops show-

casing their achievements.

Later in the morning, the Lower School children were excited to listen to Avril reading her books and exploring the

emotions such as feeling left out, others being unkind and having worries . They experimented with ways to manage

their feelings and thought of ways to make themselves feel better.

It was an action packed, but exciting morning and we were thrilled to have such a brilliant celebration of reading.
