BUSH FIRE DANGER PERIOD COMMENCED 1ST NOVEMBER 2010

SOUTHERN TABLELANDS ZONE NSW Rural Fire Service SOUTHERN TABLELANDS ZONE has declared the start to the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) as at 1st November 2010.

From November 1, any person wishing to light a fire in GOULBURN MULWAREE, UPPER LACHLAN and YASS VALLEY Local Government areas will require a permit.

During a Total Fire Ban however, no fires of any kind may be lit, even if you hold a permit. Over the last two months the brigade has been quiet, although with the rain we have been getting over this period there is now a considerable amount of growth in the grass, so please take care when slashing. Motorised machines driven or used in any grass, crop or stubble must be fitted with safety guards so constructed as to prevent any heated areas from coming into contact with combustible matter. Training For information on training dates, times and structure check the Brigade website or contact the Captain Jim Meehan on 4844 5554. Remember training and meeting times alter during daylight saving times, check the website for updated information.

NATIVE WILDLIFE UPDATE.

Just a few lines to remind our community about what is available in regard to Wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. We are very fortunate to have a group of dedicated people just a phone call away to help and advise with any issues that arise concerning our precious wildlife.

Southern Tableland WIRES care for and rehabilitate orphaned animals, bird and reptiles. We are all registered and licenced by National Parks and Wildlife.

We need the help of our local communities to assist us with information as to the whereabouts of these injured or orphaned animals.

If, in your travels on our roads, you notice an animal that has been knocked down by a vehicle, there are things that you can do to help. If you are able to stop and check the animal to determine whether or not it is dead or has a joey in pouch or near by, you would be

helping a great deal. It will be helpful if you have some disposable gloves in the car for checking inside pouches. If you find a joey please remove if from the pouch by placing your hand behind it and scooping it towards you. Pulling the joey out by legs or tail may cause dislocations. If unable to stop and check for whatever reason a quick phone call to myself or our WIRES branch will enable one of our team to attend. The animals that have crosses on them have already been checked. If you come across an animal hanging in a fence or entangled in wire please try and cut the wire and release the animal and call one of the numbers listed, the animal will need to be checked for injuries.

If you are being bothered by shooters in your area please advise our local Police. It is illegal to shoot our native wildlife without official written permission from National Parks.

On a happier note, we have had a successful year at Southern Tablelands WIRES with being able to rescue and rehabilitate all manner of native wildlife. If you are interested in joining WIRES or wanting more information on ways you and your family can help, please call Marian 4844 5244 or WIRES 4822 3888.

I wish you all a happy and safe 2011 and thank you to all the families that have helped us in the past to make a difference.

Marian Pearce.

Joy E Allenby-Acuna Alpacas - Anecdotes & Advice La Granja Holistic Alpacas

Well the Christmas and New year period is over once more. Just have the tree, decorations and cards to take down in a couple of days. Certainly before twelfth night. Heroides and I had a quiet one this year, just

younger son and family calling in on their way back from Melbourne to Sydney and our neighbours in for drinks and nibbles. Of course we had the alpacas, dogs and poultry to keep us company.

All are well and thriving, seven boys at the front, Anna and Leti and their babies in the maternity paddock and sixteen at the back. No one weaned yet, waiting a little longer.

We have had only about three days of over thirty degrees heat and the rest has been cooler.. Quite a bit of rain which is good, everything is looking very perky. Heroides has used his tractor and ride on mower more than usual this year. It is good to see everything growing so well.

Poor Queenslanders, I feel so sorry for them all with the flooding, I wonder how the alpacas up there are coping with all the wet and not much sun.

I wish everyone a Happy New Year and all the best for 2011, I have a feeling it will be a lucky, joyous and spiritual year for everyone.

Namaste and do not forget my book. www.lagranjaholisticalpacas.com.au

Joy.

OUTSTANDING FINALE FOR 2010 The annual presentation evening was a great success with a big crowd of family, community and friends on hand to celebrate the successes of the students. The entertainment was also top notch with carols and a very funny play called “Santa Claus and the Striking Elves” being presented.

RETIREMENT VILLAGE CONCERTS The tradition of entertaining our elders at the Goulburn retirement villages continued on 8 December. Students sang, played and entertained to a high standard with lots of smiles and compliments from the audiences.

BIG PLANS FOR 2011 The new school year is full of promise with some exciting things happening at Windellama Public School.

The K-2 class has moved in to the new building which has been fitted with a new interactive whiteboard.

The 3-6 room now has video conferencing facilities and an interactive whiteboard as well. Many lessons will now be enhanced by the new technology.
