Wind Resource Assessment

Windforce offers services to assess the wind resource

at new individual sites, at regional macro level and also

for existing windfarms. In carrying out these

assessments WinDForce not only uses established

packages and models such as WASP but also its in

house analytical tools. The assessment is further

backed by quantitative and qualitative judgements by

highly experienced professionals, which enables

WinDForce to apply corrections to computations in

order to come up with realistic estimates. It is a known

fact world-wide that innumerable windfarm projects are

operating much below the projected levels of

performance. WinDForce is well aware that just

theoretical modelling of windfarm site conditions is not

adequate to come up with realistic estimates.

WinDForce combines its technical and analytical

strengths with experience to provide the client with

estimates that will hold over the project lifetime.


Assessing Wind Resource

Regional Studies

During the year 2009-2010, WinDForce carried out Wind

Resource Assessment of more than a 1500 MW of

existing and proposed windfarm projects world-wide.

This also included assignments where WinDForce was

called upon by clients to carry out critical review of the

Wind Resource Assessment Reports prepared by

leading international wind resource consulting firms to

determine the reliability of the initial estimates and look

into applying possible corrections to arrive at a more

realistic estimate.

WinDForce uses in house models to assess wind

resource typically over areas of 2500 to 10000 Sq. Km.

on a resolution of about 1 sq km.

Technical DD

Windforce undertakes a thorough assessment and

evaluation of wind turbine technologies involving

ranking of different systems and sub-systems for

quantitative and qualitative aspects.

Providing Technical Due-Diligence services to

investors and clients has been one of the major

activities at Windforce. These Due Diligence services

carried out over 2009-2010 are of the following types.

Wind Turbine Technology

Wind Energy Businesses

World-wide new wind turbine manufacturing facilities

are being set up, more so in China and India. Often

these are new technologies or new designs.

WinDForce has been undertaking evaluation of these

new technologies and comparing and benchmarking

them with established and known technologies. In this,

a ranking system developed internally is used to

compare various systems and sub-systems to arrive at

a total score for quantitative and qualitative

assessments.

WinDForce has also undertaken due diligence of wind

energy businesses. Diverse assignments have been

taken up some involving businesses involved in

manufacturing of wind turbines and some in wind

power development. In all these assignments apart

from analysing the policy and market environment

relevant to the business, WinDForce also carries out an

in depth analysis of the organizations, the people

involved, their competencies and strengths, the key

verticals and the processes being followed. In addition,

the vendors in the supply chain and the quality

assurance processes are also examined. All the

physical assets and infrastructure as well as

organizations future plans and its service track record

are analysed before making final recommendations.


Due Diligence of Windfarm Assets

WinDForce also gets into the due-diligence of an

existing windfarm asset. The future life of the project is

estimated on the basis of the operational track record,

major maintenance and the physical verification of the

health of wind turbines. The exercise involves a very fine

analysis on forecasting Annual Energy Production of the

windfarm in future years based on a Wind Resource

Assessment exercise and longterm records of up to 60

years, which are used to assess the performance of the

windfarm in its project lifetime.

Owner’s Engineer

In the period 2008-2010, WinDForce established itself

as a leading consulting firm in the role of Owner’s

Engineer. In this role WinDForce successfully

completed 38 MW of windfarm capacity and more than

100 MW of capacity is under execution. As Owner’s

Engineer, WinDForce carries out the following:

?A review of the contracts to be signed between the

client and the contractor(s) and subcontractor(s)

?Review of Contractor(s) implementation plan

?Preparation of a highly detai led project

implementation schedule in coordination with the

client and the contractor(s) and sub-contractor(s)

?24X7 Supervision of all project implementation

activities by WinDForce professionals to ensure

adherence to the quality plan & best engineering

practices

?Verification of equipment and materials at points

records of materials,

Operation and Maintenance

WinDForce offers its services in the area of Operation

and Maintenance of windfarms either as one time

diagnostic study or in the form of an ongoing

association as managers and owner’s engineers in the

operation and maintenance activities.

Diagnostic Studies - O&M

WinDForce undertakes diagnostic studies of

windfarms in order to improve its operational

performance. This involves a thorough review of the

O&M practice, organization engaged for O&M, tools,

equipment, infrastructure, logistics and stock of spare

parts. Operational data is analysed to ascertain the

mean time required to repair and response time to

faults and failures. This detailed analysis is then

examined in the light of daily and monthly wind

patterns at the site to come up with strategies for

planned maintenance.

The study enables that development of a meaningful

strategy for the operation and maintenance of the

windfarm, which if implemented, would result in

significant enhancement in the performance of the

windfarm.

Owner’s Engineer O&M

Organizing Power Offtake

WinDForce also acts as Owner’s Engineer for windfarm

Owner’s. In this capacity, WinDForce deputes its

engineers to the project to monitor Operation and

Maintenance on a 24X7 basis and track failure and

response to failure. In addition, windforce experts work

closely with the O&M team to improve the O&M

practice and its quality and to introduce best industry

practice in areas of predictive and preventive

maintenance and condition monitoring of wind

turbines. WinDForce also provides a long term and

short term forecasting depending upon available wind

data to facilitate operation & maintenance as well as

scheduling of generated power.

WinDForce realizes that fine technology and

assessments alone do not make a viable windfarm

project. At the end of the day, the client is looking

forward to a project that fetches adequate returns to

equity investors. While one of the ways to achieve high

performance projects is sound techno-commercial

decision with regard to proposed sites and the

technology involved, often in order to achieve the

expected returns one has to go beyond this aspect and

this is where WinDForce comes in with innovative

power off-take options and structures that are

enhanced returns to the project.
