Evening of the Arts The annual MHEA Art Contest was held on Friday, August 17 with art drop-off and judging held during the day and viewing being held in the evening, with some of our own MHEA students providing musical entertainment. New this year were culinary offerings from several students who were raising funds for mission trips or other per-sonal opportunities. It was a lovely night of fellowship with friends, art, music, food, and the chance to meet new people. Dads and grandparents who ordinarily might have missed this opportunity got a chance to experience what talent our homeschoolers have to offer.

Local artists judged the incredible talent of our MHEA students and awarded ribbons for first, second, and third place in each grade for painting and draw-ing; as well as for photography, textiles, framed, and 3-D / other art in each of four age categories. One honorable mention ribbon was also awarded for creativity in the painting and drawing category. Please see page 7 of this newsletter for a complete list of all winners in all categories. With so many pieces of art displayed, several culinary offerings, and eleven musical performances, "An Evening of the Arts" was a great success. Thanks to all who participated and came to enjoy an exciting event showcasing our

students. Special thanks to Shannon Bellamy for organizing the event; and for the work put in by Kathy Arm-strong, Hannah Bellamy, Robby Bellamy, Stacy Hert, Richard Murley, Shey Sims, and Ginger Velasquez. Thanks to Faith Baptist Church for allowing us to host the event at their facility, and for always being gracious to offer help to the homeschool community. Thank you to the talented students who provided musical entertainment during the art viewing:

Water PoloAre you interested in playing MHEA water polo? Fall workouts have started, and varsity tryouts are coming up soon! The MHEA water polo team has won back-to-back state championships, and is ready to start preparing for the upcoming season. Head Coach Jonathan Dobkins and Assistant Coach Ben Addison would love to see you at the upcoming fall workout if you would like to learn more about joining the team.Fall Workout Date: Saturday, October 20 - The workout will be held at St. George’s Compton Aquatics Center, 1880 Wolf River Blvd., Collierville, TN at 3:00 pm. This is a great opportunity for anyone to give water polo a shot. The workout is for middle school (6th - 8th grades) and high school (9th - 12th grades) athletes. Everyone who comes will be able to:

Work out and get to meet our returning veterans.• Get a feel for the basics needed for our varsity tryouts in December.• Play a match of water polo!•

If you plan to attend, please RSVP via email to Coach Ben, [email protected], at least a week before the workout date. If your athletes want to bring a group of friends, RSVP as a group to enter the matches as a team!Varsity Tryout Tentative Date: Saturday, December 8; 3:00 pm (also at St. George’s Compton Aquatics Center) If your student athlete enjoys our fall workout, then it’s likely they have what it takes to join our varsity squad for their second straight title defense this coming spring! The tryouts will be similar in format to the fall workout, so we encourage everyone to take advantage of that. We also highly recommend checking out our MHEA swimming program! Most of our varsity athletes also participate in the fall swim season, as MHEA Swim is a great way to get in shape and hang out with your future water polo teammates. If anyone has a conflict with the tryout date, but still wants to be a part of the team, notify us and we will be able to set up some alternative dates. For more information on our Water Polo team and our coaches, see the article on page 14 of this newsletter.

Water Polo General Information and Coach Bios

MHEA Water Polo began in 2015. In the short time since, it has become one of the most decorated programs in the state. The team's achievements would not have been possible without the tireless work of the student athletes. Heavy emphasis is placed on developing thought processes and dis-ciplined habits that will serve student athletes throughout their futures.Head Coach Jonathan Dobkins grew up playing varsity water polo in the US heartland of the sport, southern California. After graduating high school, Coach Dobkins attended Auburn University, managing and playing for their water polo club for the majority of his time there. Coach Dobkins is the most accomplished high school water polo coach in the state. Prior to his tenure with MHEA he coached at SBA, leading them to one state title and four straight title game appearances. He also coached 2 future collegiate varsity players during this time.Assistant Coach Ben Addison was homeschooled in Memphis and was a member of the first MHEA swim team. After graduating from the University of Alabama, he returned to Memphis and became the first head coach for MHEA Water Polo. Coach Ben led the team to their first state title in 2017 before stepping down as the head coach to enter dental school.
