Rollo is a very special puppy. Rollo,who is now about 4 months old, cameto us with his mother and siblingswhen he was only days old. He and his four other siblings werehealthy, big, and very active. Their mom, Gypsi took great care of herpups and they grew quickly! Gypsi is a Collie/Shepherd mix and thefather, we are guessing, was either a Newfoundland or St. Bernard mix.Yes, we think he is going to be a very big dog!

Rollo is a fabulous little guy! He is so affectionate, loving and playful.He absolutely loves other dogs - especially big dogs - and hasabsolutely no fear upon meeting them. You can really see his desire tobe with them come out! He was also raised with cats and is cratetrained!

When Rollo was about 8 weeks old, things got scary. He began havingseizures three days after being adopted. One of his siblings, Aquira,also started having seizures 24 hours after Rollo did. Since Aquira wasstill with her foster mom, she was immediately rushed to the vet andthe seizures were stopped with Phenobarbital. Her blood was checkedand showed signs of an infection with anemia (lowered red blood cellcount). She was put on a course of antibiotics as well.

Meanwhile, for her little brother Rollo it was not so smooth. His newvet did not give him any medication to stop the seizures and kept himfor 5 days at the hospital to observe him. He seized for 5 days! Finally,we were able to convince his new owner to please return him to us, asshe did not want to change vets. He came back to us and was immedi-ately put on the same course of Phenobarbital as Aquira, along with the

antibiotics. Thankfully, he had nofurther seizures.

He has now been off of thePhenobarbital for 2 weeks (as ofApril 19) and no further seizureshave occurred. Our vet told usfrom the beginning that withjuvenile seizures, it is most likelythat they will outgrow them before

the age of 6 months. This is what we’re hoping and expecting. Neitherof the puppies has any sign of infection lingering and are back to actinglike happy, healthy, “puppies!”

However, due to their history they both need a very special owner whoisn’t afraid of their past problems, and is prepared to handle anyadditional seizures if they do occur and is committed to caring forRollo for the rest of his life.

Horseback Safaris - Standardone-hour, two-hour, or three-hour horseback safaris areavailable daily. HorsebackSafaris can be arranged forriders with varying levels ofexperience. All guests should beat least 12 years of age; 10 yearsof age is an acceptable age with proven riding experience.Guests weighing more than 275 pounds will need to beassessed by our Equestrian Director before they are allowedto take a Horseback Safari. Call-in reservations are recom-mended in order to assure that we and our horses are readyfor you.

A favorite with visitors is our two-night “Crescent JCattle Drive Weekend Safari,” which includes some training inFlorida Cowhunter skills of ridin’, ropin’ and cow cuttin’.(Florida cattlemen weren’t “cowboys” because hunting thosewild Spanish-descent cattle in Florida’s woods and swampswas a man’s job, they said.) Choice of campground dependson weather, type of group and recommendation of the ridinginstructors.

Another favorite is similar, but shorter – anOvernight Trail Ride Safari combined with a next-day“Rawhide Roundup.” More time is spent riding the wilder-ness trails of Forever Florida and learning about nature, lesson cowpoke skills.

I recently went to a barrel race that was supposed to be afun show. Sadly all I heard from the kids were how they were“showing their horse who’s boss” and kicking harder. It was weirdfor me to hear and watch this because I always thought thatsomeone gets into horses for the love of horses. My horse hasalways been my friend, an animal that could be there for me the wayno person could. The thought of kicking and whipping my horseswould never be an option. Now, I am not saying that I would let myhorse walk all over me. There is definitely a respect level with ourrelationship. I have proven to her that I can be the alpha leader, andfor that she has a great deal of respect for me and I for her. Shedoesn’t do things out of fear. She does them because I’m askingher, and I explain it clearly so she understands. Horses love to dowhat you ask, as long as they feel that they physically can do whatyou’re asking. It’s just a matter of knowing how to communicate itto them. I just can’t help but wonder why we need bigger bits,spurs, tie-downs and all these other contraptions to control ourhorses. Shouldn’t it be about communicating with your horse;shouldn’t it be fun for you and the horse?

When I watch professional barrel racing, the majority ofthe time the rider never really kicks hard or yanks on the reins. Ican tell just by watching that that horse knows the pattern and thehorse responds to the lightest cues, many times unseen. Wouldn’t itbe nice to watch all kids riding like that? But how? I am sureparents would love to see their child riding in tune with his or herhorse, but may not have the knowledge to teach that level of

harmony. Having knowledge, I found, will eliminate FEAR andFRUSTRATION, which could lead to inhumane actions (intendedor unintended) on the part of the person, or worse, getting out ofhorse activities entirely.

At a local show I saw a horse, pinned up in a corner of thearena, rearing, kicking and trying to lunge out at the rider as shetried to mount. Due to the horses excessive rearing and buckingwhile the child was trying to mount outside of the arena, the adultsfigured they might have a better chance getting the kid on in thearena. So, the horse was led in the arena and cornered. Afterasking around, I was told that the behavior is justified by the factthat the horse is ‘young’, ‘inexperienced’, ‘injured’ and ‘the girl iswearing a helmet, so she will be ok’. It did not make sense to methat a helmet was going to help this girl out of a possibly unsafeexperience for her and a terrifying experience for her horse. I feelhelmets are made to protect your head IN CASE somethinghappens (like a buck from a bee sting!) and you fall from yourhorse, not as a magical safety device to a horse that is scared todeath and fighting with all he has left. This particular horse mayhave been young, but he was experienced enough to know whatwas in store for him. He was already bleeding from the mouth andpastern. The arena/show was not a pleasurable experience for himand he did not want to be there. I feel a little knowledge andtraining for the human will bring out a level of trust and respectfrom the horse. He can learn that what happened in the arenabefore will not happen again. He will be a sane and SAFER horse

Horses love to play. They can enjoy doing the activitiesthat we have chosen for them such as show jumping or barrelracing if asked in a way they understand. A horse should LOVEhis job. If he feels like you are a threat he will react as such. It’sall basic horse psychology. Horses are not people. They don’tthink like us, act like us, or communicate like us. Horses are notpredators; they are prey animals. We are the hunters and they arethe hunted. They must be perceptive to danger or they will be thefirst one eaten by the lion. Just by becoming the leader a horsecould want to participate because he now knows that what is beingsaid is important. The way horses establish leadership is simplywho moves whose feet! It’s so easy and it could help so manyhorse and human relationships. I first learned to be a leader to myhorse when I started the Parelli Natural Horsemanship program. Parelli got me started, but I have learned from many other sources.Information about how to establish a respectful and FUN relation-ship with your horse can be found in at-home study packets, theweb and at local barns, such as Cloud 9 Ranch in Naples.

I have seen kids start with horses because they have a lovefor animals, but because of frustration, they are beating theseanimals they used to LOVE. This could all change, with justsimple knowledge. Let’s start changing what is put IN a child’shead, rather than relying on what is put on them. Helmets mayprotect from a fall or two, but a helmet will do nothing for a broken
