ROTHLEY PARK GC PRESENTS £8300 TO MARIE CURIE CANCER Every year the gents and ladies captains at Rothley Park Golf Club (Leics) raise money for a charity of their choice. Last year the captains, Phil Watson and Pru Lapworth, worked together for Marie Curie Cancer raising money through a wide range of golfing and social events at the club. Phil and Pru recently presented a cheque for £8300.00 to Marie Curie Cancer representative Joan Rampton (centre), who thanked all the members of Rothley Park for their generosity. “It has been a real pleasure to support and be able to donate to such a worthy cause.” said the captains. “Both of us have reason to be particularly grateful for the magnificent service they provide to families and communities locally and we know the money that has been raised over the course of the last year by the golfers at Rothley Park will be put to excellent use”. Ian Agar and Viv Holland, the 2014 Captains have chosen Parkinson’s UK as their charity for which to raise money throughout year. Hollinwell Sherwood Forest Lindrick WIN A PLACE IN THE MERCEDES- BENZ HEATHLAND CLASSIC The 54 hole open pairs event, to be held from June 3-5 at three of the region’s finest golf clubs is fully booked, but Midlands Golfer have an exclusive chance for a pair of golfers to compete in the first ever running of The Mercedes-Benz Heathland Classic which could see them driving off into the sunset in a brand new Mercedes for a year. That prize is for a hole-in-one at the event, but many more from the likes of Footjoy, Titliest and Adidas are also on offer. The format for the event is pairs betterball with 180 golfers taking part over the three days, firstly at The Notts GC (Hollinwell) on day one, then just a short drive away for day two at Sherwood Forest GC before the concluding round at Lindrick GC on the Notts/Yorkshire border. Three nominated holes, one on each course will offer the amazing hole-in-one prize and our winners will also be invited to take part in the review of the event, which will be included in July’s edition. CLEO PICK PHIL Renowned as being one of the region’s least publicity shy golf clubs, Cleobury Mortimer GC came up with a football style contract signing of their new Head Professional lately as Phil Moore was welcomed to the club by club captain Gary Hawes (left) and owner Graham Pain (right). Aged just 23, Phil has packed a lot into his golfing career already with an impressive CV from all over Europe including spells in Scotland, N Ireland and Lithuania. The club are delighted to have secured someone of Phil’s calibre and coaching reputation and are looking forward to seeing him develop their academy golfers as well as improving the games of the Cleobury members. Glen Gorse GC are delighted to announce the appointment of Richard Reed as their new Head Professional. Coming through the amateur golf ranks based at Birstall in Leicestershire, Richard played representative golf for the county in both junior and senior teams whilst also competing in both midland and national amateur events. With A levels in Physics, Psychology and Sports Science, Richard has an educational background that assists with the more scientific aspects of golf. After a spell playing golf in America and learning from some award winning coaches at a golf school in Texas, Richard began working in the professional shop at Notts Golf Club (Hollinwell) in 2006. Richard is excited by the prospect of returning to Leicestershire and continuing to develop and improve as a golf professional whilst providing a great service to the members of Glen Gorse Golf Club. Disabled Golf Season tees off in Notts 21 disabled golfers (including two juniors) teed off the Order Of Merit 2014 season in the region at The Nottinghamshire GC. They played The Open Course which presented its challenges with course guides to hand for the early part of the course. Lady golfer Lesley Bain (MS from Herts) hit the shot of the day, holing her second for an eagle at the dog leg eighth. The results - 3rd, Brian ‘Barmy’ Parsons with 32 points (Parkinsons, Glengorse GC, Leics); 2nd, Stephen Wardale with 32 points on countback (Polio, from Ganstead Park GC, Hull); and the winner with 35 points was junior 13 year old Lewis Eccles (ASD, ADHD, Dyspraxia from Waterfront GC, South Yorks). New members were welcomed to their first DGA event – well-respected shortarmgolfer Tony Lloyd (The Shropshire GC); Chris Liles (Parkinsons, from Breadsall Priory GC) and Neil Maymond (who wears leg irons following a car accident from Notts). The tour returns to the East Midlands on April 11th at Glen Gorse GC (Leics) DGA is a pan-disability, not-for-profit organization, membership is free. It was the first hole that provided the excitement too as the 179 yard par three saw not one but two holes-in-ones in very quick succession from a pair of visiting competitors. Firstly, Robin Griffiths, a six handicapper who had travelled all the way from Burnham & Berrow GC in Somerset aced the hole, which was actually his second of the day following a shotgun start. Not long after, Vince Lee, an Atherstone GC member recorded the second, the nine handicapper starting his round at the 17th hole.
