Survey Participation The survey of parents was completed at the end of the Autumn term 2014, 18 months after the last survey. A total of 197 responses were received, representing about one third of pupils at the school. Representation in the survey was reasonably consistent across the school. In terms of representation from the community, 75% of responses were from white British parents and 86% from white parents - minority ethnic groups are under-represented in the survey.

Parents’ Comments 2014 “Dedicated, knowledgeable, kind and caring teachers and staff, and wonderful learning opportunities for the children, such as field trips, science/math week and drama presentations.” “Despite being a large primary school, it manages to create the feel of a much smaller one, with a great community. I've been particularly impressed with the evening workshops for parents, and by how professional and knowledgeable the teachers have been at these.” “Apart from great leadership and growing academic success, the school does everything it can, in my opinion, to ensure the children are happy. My son is the happiest and most balanced during the school week. He loves coming to school and spending time with his classmates.” “I love the school and would not want my children anywhere else. It is a wonderful community school with great teaching and friendly staff.” “Overall balance of education is fantastic, the facilities are very good and my child feels very happy in the school environment.” “Strong emphasis on learning even at Nursery and Reception level and a strong moral code with runs through the ethos of the school. It’s a school that wants to, and will do better.” “There is a clear process of improvement and all the teachers are engaged with it and motivated. They want the school to be the best it can be and it is obvious from the staff focus and the teaching practices.” “Very well-led school with exceptionally engaged and enthusiastic teachers and support staff. The school offers a broad range of extracurricular activities from young age and caters well for different abilities within the classroom.” “Excellent quality of teaching and leadership, great facilities and environment, including outdoor areas, and positive relationship between parents and teachers.” “Excellent, caring and fun teachers creating an environment that encourages hard work and rewards effort. “ “Fantastic community school where children are happy and enjoy going every day and with hard-working, caring teachers.” “Staff work incredibly hard to ensure that the children have an excellent day at school. There is good, solid teaching for things such as grammar in writing. My child is really clear about strategies for answering reading comprehension, how to put complex sentences in their work and strategies for written maths methods.” “The school has a friendly and positive atmosphere, and clear, effective and well organised teaching and learning. It is a place for our daughter to feel happy, safe and to have fun while learning.” “Good community school which has made the transition from a small school to a relatively large primary school very well. Children are well behaved. Staff are caring and well-liked by the children (not just the teachers but all staff).” “Great academic standards and great at transmitting academic material in the most innovative ways.” “Great school, great teachers, lovely environment and lovely children.” “Only to say what a brilliant school this is that me and my family feel honoured that our little girl goes to school at Wimbledon Park Primary and her teachers are doing an amazing job.”

Areas for Development Although almost all parents are very positive about the school, and highlight many more strengths than areas for development, there are some areas for development that parents have highlighted. It is worth noting that positive feedback and strengths very largely outnumber the points raised for development, and that no single issue for development was raised by more than 5% of the survey respondents. These have been reviewed and analysed for themes of issues raised by more than four times. These themes and the actions to be taken are detailed below, based on review and discussion at senior leadership team and staff meetings:

Theme (number of mentions in brackets) Issues raised Comment/Actions Email (11) Too many emails.

Could they be consolidated?

Too many channels (email, parentpay, cypad).

Parents’ feedback is overall that the quality of communication has improved over past 18 months.

News and information will be better published on the new website – parents can “select” the information they choose to receive.

Stretch for more able children (9)

Push highest attaining children to achieve more

Can there be more extension activities?

Can support staff be not only directed to children needing support?

School assessment results (at the above expected levels 5 and 6 by the end of primary school) indicate that there is already a high level of academic push and stretch.

Although academic achievement is already high and increasing annually, the school aims to keep improving these standards.

The main focus for this improvement will be through continually improving the teaching and learning in class.

Parent teacher progress feedback (9)

Not enough consultation time with teachers during the year – more meetings, longer meetings.

Feedback from teachers clearer on progress, targets and next steps.

All our teachers offer ongoing dialogue and flexibility to meet and review individual children/issues outside of the parent consultation evenings

Feedback at parent teacher consultations needs to be very clear to parents about achievement and next steps.

There are no plans to add more parent-teacher meetings or lengthen the time of the existing meetings

Congestion (7) Playground congestion in morning and afternoon (outside studio hall).

No space for Y2 to get through.

Some additional markings and organisation will be implemented (in warmer/dryer weather).

Reminders will also be given to parents (e.g. to allow corridor for Y2 children).

Sport/PE (7) More sport/PE in school. This has been an area that has developed significantly over the past 2 years.

The school intends to continue to develop high quality sport and PE provision, increasing the opportunities for all children in school.

Homework (7) More homework.

Less homework!

Not at weekend.

Overall, parent perceptions about homework have very much improved over the past 18 months (since the last survey).

Homework set on Wednesday and collected in on Monday allows some families to complete on weekdays and others at weekends depending on preference.

Homework effectiveness is monitored closely by the senior leadership team, although there are no plans to increase the amount currently.

Page 12: WIMBLEDON PARK PRIMARY SCHOOLfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File... · WIMBLEDON PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL PARENTS SURVEY 2014 Summary Survey responses show that parents perceptions

Theme (number of mentions in brackets) Issues raised Comment/Actions Maintaining school culture (6)

Concerns that school culture and ethos might be lost as the school continues to get bigger.

Feedback from the survey indicates that pastoral care and community feel is stronger now that at the start of expansion.

This has been (and continues to be) an explicit aim of the senior leadership team and governing body.

Support for working parents (5)

Workshops later.

Access to events/opportunities not just during school day.

The leadership team believe that there is a reasonable balance between events times scheduling for parents and home life considerations for teachers.

We will endeavour to give better advance notice and not change dates to facilitate forward planning for parents.

This will be kept under review but there are no plans to change.

School meals (4) Improve quality. School meal take up is about 60% across the school.

We have a new cook starting later in Spring term with the aim of improving school meal quality and take up.

The will be also be a school food governors working party established this term.

Extra-curricular clubs (4)

More clubs.

More coverage of interest areas.

More free clubs.

The positive feedback on activities and clubs very much outweighs the developmental feedback.

The number of non-charging clubs/activities (e.g. lunchtime sport, music) has increased significantly in the past 18 months.

This will be kept under review but there are no plans to change.

Secondary transfer (4) Better advice about choices for secondary school.

Specific preparation for 11+ and selective school tests.

Parent information events and support for secondary school decisions have increased over the past 12 months (e.g. widening invitation to Y4 parents, inviting secondary schools to present to parents, new school opening plans event)

Verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning Y6 lunchtime club run this year

General curriculum time cannot be allocated to selective school test preparation since this would cater for only a minority of children

This will be kept under review but with no plans for significant changes.

There were a number of other points raised by individual parents, both generally about the school as well as about individual class/children situations. All of these points have been reviewed by the school’s leadership team.
