WIM ADRIAENSSENS

(1968)Wim Adriaenssens is an artist/designer based in Belgium. He started his own

design-studio in 1991: Groupe AWA. His activities and collaborations are countless: As aashion-and urniture-designer, he tries to create designs which transcend time and give

the environment o people a quiet atmosphere with the right amount o tension. Hisdesigns are influenced by Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto.

As a painter, Wim is a figurative painter, but knows how to use his materials in an almostabstract way, by looking at, or example, the “gestes” o Alechinsky, using the possibilities

o his arm and body to paint. Wim’s material research brought him in touchwithVenetian erpentine, an almost orgotten product to use with oil paint, which he

re-values in his work in a complete new way: not only as a medium ,but as an independent ingredient.

Because o the use o this specific technique, his paintings are filled with energy andmovement. An energy which he canalizes to express different eelings o a (male) body.His use o the canvas is very particular: even though it is an oil-painting, Wim only usesthat part o the canvas which is interesting or him to tell his story. Te rest is lef blank

and lef with the spots his energetic brush-touch lef behind during the process.Te blanks on the canvas show his admiration or Chinese painting. Te principle

o “Wu Wei” (to generate a maximum impact with a minimum o orce) becomes veryreal in his paintings.

Wim has a way o showing us a certain kind o melancholy in his works, without becomingmelodramatic. His works are loaded with emotion, and at the same time decorative,

because o his balanced and well-thought compositions.

His work has been rewarded with several awards in Belgium throughout the years.

(2011)Would einstein ever had an empty head? could he ever enjoy himsel without thinking

about physics? Is it possible to really think out o your own box?For more than one second?

Where does our “individual’’ starts and ends? Does a “universal human being’’ exists?Why are we so different and yet the same? Is it tour personal history?Are there different “mes’’ who come together in specific circumstances and then we

call it “enlightenment”?

Maybe it is just a coincidence o nature that we have all these emotionsand we want to be individuals…

THE HOURS(2011)

Tis series o paintings is based on photographs I ound back when cleaning out the houseo my parents. It contained photos dating rom 1930 untill the year I was born, 1968.

It reminded me o the people who lived beore me, who all had loved, hated, kissed, toldtheir opinions, and had now aded..

Teir cares were pretty much the same as our cares, but theirs are orgotten now.Generation on generation, similar issues come to the surace. Moments in lives thateveryone recognizes: “the days, the love, the hours’’. Some moments in lie can be so

important that they are decisive or the rest o a lie-time.

Te characters in the paintings are rom a typical Flemish amily in those years:Te Christian values, which they pretended, but weren’t very successul in maintaining.

Te uncle who was a priest, the aunt who was a nun, and who dictated the amilyhow to live their lives. Te struggle o going to a world war. Te children who

died rom lack o medical care.

Which part do we play in this amily history?

Are we able to solve issues rom earlier generations?

HOMO COPULANDUS(2014)

Tis series o paintings has grown out o a eeling o vibrations between people,and the impossibility to “contact” another person in a real way. We think we connect toother people, but do we really? Or do we say it to ourselves to comort us? o make it

bearable. Can we find happiness in us without reaching out to other people?Or is that also just a comorting idea?

Do we find a connection when our bodies come together? Or do we do it just to pleaseourselves?
