As the icicles grow long, most gardeners tend to daydream about the warm days of spring and summer. I was thinking of the time my wife and I took a trip to Stillwater reservoir to do some camping. Stillwater Reservoir is about 2 hours north of Utica and is as close to the middle of nowhere as you can get. Since it’s a long haul from here, we’d made reservations to stay at the Stillwater Inn that’s located at the boat launch. Never having been there before, we didn’t really know what to expect. The last hour of the drive is on a dusty dirt road so we really started to wonder. What a pleasant surprise the Stillwater Inn was! It was late afternoon when we arrived and we were greeted by Marian who, with her husband, are the owners of the inn and restaurant. We made arrangements for dinner and, after dropping a bag off at our room returned for our meal. As Marian led us to our table she told us we had the best seat in the house. Since a large deck was blocking our view of the lake, we wondered what might make this the best table.

that surrounded the deck. Buzzing all about were 20 to 30 of their resident hummers. As we were enjoying the show we were again pleasantly surprised by the menu and a short time later

while the hummingbirds continued their aggressive dance to gain access to the feeder only a foot or two from our window. Marian and her husband had been feeding them for many years and their resident population was one of their best-known attractions.

The next morning we loaded our canoe and spent the next four days enjoying the

I’ve seen in the Adirondacks. We had a ball paddling the ponds, swamps and shoreline of this wonderful manmade lake. Stillwater is one of the largest loon nesting sites in the state so we were serenaded every evening by their haunting calls as we rested our weary arms next to a

to the landing. After loading all the gear into the truck we decided to have a snack at the inn before the drive home. We didn’t get the “best” table since someone had reserved it. We were seated nearby and had already ordered when the diners who had reserved “the table with a view” arrived. It was a father with two young daughters of about eight and ten years old. It was their

behind us so we could easily overhear the wonder and amazement in their voices. Marian, who’s quite the authority on her hummers, answered all their questions.

“Where do they go in winter?” “All the way to Central America …south of Mexico.”

I thought it was a good question and wondered what Marian would have to say.

“See that one there…the large one with the top of his beak broken off?”

he still comes back every year.”

“WOW!” gasped both daughters the father and myself. I have to say that, as much as I already knew about hummingbirds, my respect and delight was rekindled that day at Stillwater Reser-voir. While I don’t have thirty hummingbirds returning to my yard every spring, I am blessed with a pair and there is usually a young one darting about by midsummer. I’m running out of space (as usual) so I’ll continue next week with some tips on how to attract these extraordinary birds into your yard this spring. And if you get a chance, take a trip out to The Stillwater Inn. If you’re not into camping (poor you), you can stay at the inn and rent a boat. Or, you can take a cruise on the ferry that goes to Beaver River Station; a town that you can only get to by boat since there are no roads that go there. Thanks for the read.
