Knit Together in Love Paul told the Colossian church that he wanted their hearts to be knit together in love. It takes many different people and many different kinds of people to make a strong Body of Christ. As Emmaus Pilgrims we are reminded of this when we look at the colorful lanyards we receive at the end of our walk weekend. Each simple necklace is made of colorful yarn, which some loving person prayerfully knits. It reminds us that the love of Christ comes in many colors. It also reminds us that we should demonstrate or love for Him in many ways to all the different kinds of people we meet. When I was a sponsorship chairperson for this community, part of my job was to assemble the lanyard, cross, and tag for each of these necklaces. I made it a point to pray over each necklace and for its pilgrim by name as I was making them. It was a blessing to be able to work behind the scenes as the hands of Christ while praying for each Pilgrim. For the last several years, a loving member of our community has quietly and patiently knitted these lanyards year around. She supplied hundreds each year, and each of us wear one to Emmaus events. Because of changes in her life, she has asked for one or more people to take over this simple task so that this blessing can be shared by others. Each lanyard takes between 15 and 50 minutes to make (depending on one’s skill lever) and an experienced person can easily make one while watching a TV show without missing any of the show. Dave’s Dispenses
Let’s Ask the Lord of the Harvest
Around where we live, most all the corn has been planted, and thanks to the favorable weather at the end of May and beginning of June, the soybeans are nearly done also. Summers go fast, and in seemingly no time at all, it will be autumn and we’ll see combines in the fields. Here’s hoping for timely rain, good growing conditions, and a plentiful harvest.
In John 4:35, Jesus said: “Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.” As we know, Jesus wasn’t referring to a crop of corn and soybeans, but to human souls. And His message is that now is the time to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. We don’t need to wait, ‘cause the pickn’s are good … right now.
You see, the problem Jesus addressed isn’t a poor yield, but the lack of laborers to bring it in. Jesus put it this way: “Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.’” (Matthew 9:37,38). Jesus summarized the issue as having a ripe crop ready to pick, but an inadequate staff to go get it.
As is typical of our Lord, He didn’t leave us high and dry, but explained how to fix the problem. Unlike the strategies we might suggest though, He didn’t say we should contract a team of migrant workers, or recruit some summer help while school’s out. No, Jesus said we should pray. Seriously, pray. “Ask the Lord of the harvest … to send out workers”. Isn’t that interesting? Jesus simply said we need to ask God to send forth His harvesters.
I’m told that we are lacking pilgrims enough to have Women’s Walk #98 at the end of this month. The Emmaus Board requires 15 confirmed applications by the Community Gathering prior to a Walk, which is Tuesday, June 13th this time. In times past when there’s been a shortage of pilgrims, the community would scramble to recruit whoever, wherever possible, to satisfy the 15-‐person requirement. That’s not the strategy this time. Instead, we’re asking for the community to faithfully and fervently pray. Ask the Lord of the Emmaus Walk to send laborers to the divine appointments He’s prepared, so we have a roster of pilgrims that He’s designated to attend, instead of any warm body we can talk into trying it out. Make sense?
Thank you for putting this request high on your prayer list. I believe God is just waiting for us to ask.

More of Mike’s Musings If you would be willing to donate some time and talent to be the hands of Christ for this Emmaus Community, please contact me at [email protected], and I will put you in contact with the person who is making the lanyards so you can help. I would like it if several different people share the blessing of making them. Together, we can remind others of Christ’s love.
