READING – USING A DICTIONARY - TREES

Definition Tree Leaves

Willow

A tree with long, thin branches and narrow leaves that often grows near water.

Rowan

A tree also known as a mountain ash as it grows well in mountainous areas. Its leaves are similar to the ash tree.

Beech A tree with a smooth grey trunk and shiny leaves.

Silver Birch

A tree with light airy foliage and distinctive silvery-white peeling bark. It has triangular-shaped leaves.

Yew An evergreen tree with bright red berries.

Juniper

An evergreen shrub with purple berries used in cooking and medicine.

OakA large tree which produces acorns. It has hard wood and is often used to make furniture.Park Wood’s tree symbol is the oak tree and our mascot is a squirrel because they like acorns!

Deciduous trees shed their leaves, usually as an adaptation to a cold or dry/wet season. Evergreen trees do lose leaves, but each tree loses its leaves gradually and not all at once.
