Spring 2020 PK-7 Program Schedule and Calendar

PK to 7th Grade Spring SessionJanuary 6, 2020 to June 11, 2020

After School is an enrichment-based, specialized program offered at the 299 North 7th Street PK-8 Campus. A variety of classes run from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. with an additional optional hour of Extended Care from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. of supervised play. All After School providers and instructors have gone through interviews, reference checks, and background checks. They are supervised and evaluated by Williamsburg Northside administrative team.

Enrollment and Payment

Enrollments will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to provide the top quality program, all classes will have a maximum number of participants. If your child prefers a particular class, we strongly recommend you to sign up within 24 hours of the registration opening. A confirmation email will be sent after the payment is submitted. Payment is due online at the time of registration.

Late Policy

The After School Program concludes promptly at 4:30 p.m. at the PK-8 Campus. Extended Care ends promptly at 5:30 p.m.. All students MUST be picked up on time. If a student is picked up late from After School more than 2 times, without extenuating circumstances, his/her enrollment in future After School programming will be in jeopardy. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

Refund/Cancellation Policy

November 30, 2019: A full refund minus the non refundable registration fee

December 10, 2019: 50% refund minus the non refundable registration fee

December 20, 2019: No Refund

Student Conduct Expectation

After School will follow the same Student Conduct Expectations as in stated the Parent Handbook.

All-Sports Grades: PK to 3

All-Sports is a multi-sport class specifically designed for our youngsters as an introduction to the world of sports, teamwork and athletics! We use age-appropriate, fun games to engage students in a variety of sports. Each week we will practice a different sport, giving students the opportunity to practice a variety of basic sports skills, like passing, shooting & scoring, throwing, and catching.

Students will get to explore the fundamentals of tennis, soccer, baseball, kickball, and basketball. They will have a blast playing games such as, T-ball, capture the flag, relay & obstacle races and a whole lot more! As we are teaching students how to play individual and team sports, we also help them meet developmental milestones and develop their physical literacy. Students will have the opportunity to refine, rehearse, and repeat a wide range of sports skills in a fun, supportive, and non-competitive environment that emphasizes social & physical development. Creative Ballet Grades : PK to K

Adding on and enhancing the creative ballet foundation, Ballet (Beginner level) takes dancers to the next phase of their learning. Additional ballet positions are appropriately integrated along with more challenging arm and leg skills standard in the technique. Dancers will begin with ballet warm up, develop skills increasing their endurance, flexibility and strength as well as broadening their self-expression and imagination as they’re lead through themed sequences calling for creativity, presentational skills and ballet technique. Create A Picture Book with Nell MadiganGrades: 2 to 7

Is your child an artist, writer or avid reader? Do they have a vivid imagination or a great story to tell? This class will guide children through the writing of a fictional story with a focus on creating interesting characters, an intriguing setting, and following a story arc with a problem/solution. Children will revise and edit their work before meeting with a publisher. They will be handed a blank bound book in which they will illustrate and “publish” their final story.

Born Kickers Soccer Grades: PK to 1

Born Kickers inspires the love of soccer in PK to first grade boys and girls. The coaches teach the sport in a positive, healthy, and safe environment – where students gain the benefits of team athletics and develop a passion for the global game. Born out of the Manhattan Kickers Football Club, the program has helped hundreds of players achieve their soccer aspirations. More details can be found at bornkickers.com

Budding Entrepreneurs Grades: 3 to 7

“Shark Tank” to Will North! Join other intrepid students and develop a business plan for their own business idea. Students will learn to take risks and persevere, while making “business-like” decisions about strategy, marketing and finance. Students will be cooking up—and eating—dishes like Spanakopita, Sushi, Paratha, Pumpkin Ravioli and more! We realize many claim they are “allergic to salad”- a convenient and understandable excuse in this era of pre-packaged industrialized food. Our word combats this widespread ‘allergy,” while increasing skills, technique, and familiarity with healthy foods, and creating a platform for a lifetime of adventurous eating through activity- filled classes. Cursive with Abby HeimGrades: 2 to 5

Cursive instruction will include practice pages, word practice, sentence practice, and the kids ultimate favorite: GAMES! Students will first learn the basics and formation of cursive letters. They will get to explore the classroom and do a scavenger hunt, writing down objects they find in cursive. Some of the games that students will get to play, while writing in cursive include: “Would you Rather,” “Cursive Dominoes”, and “Cursive Handwriting Dice Game”.

CodingGrades: 3 to 7

Students will learn the art of coding, problem solving, digital storytelling, game design and more, while your kids code and create their very own computer game which can then be shared and downloaded onto your devices. The fun and creativity can then continue at home as your children can log in and continue their coding journey, for no additional cost, with Code Camp’s very own proprietary software, Code Camp World.

Extended Care Grades: PK to 7

Extended Care is an opportunity for students to have unstructured, active free play supervised by one of WNS’s own teachers. After a long structured school day students need time to run, jump and explore freely. Enrollment in Extended Care assumed enrollment in an After School program.

CapoeiraGrades: 4 to 7

Capoeira is one of the most fun, dynamic activity you could do! It is played as a partner game where there are two winners in the spirit of competition. The physical aspects promote good balance, strength & flexibility, while the mental aspects encourage improvisation, strategic thinking and progressive achievement. CeramicsGrades: 3 to 7

Created by Kids is a Children’s Fine Arts Studio that serves students in NYC with unique and exciting hands-on classes. This popular Ceramics class will keep children engaged in tactile learning via classic hand-building techniques while activating their creativity and problem solving skills through 3D design and sculpture. Students will produce various projects throughout the semester, including realistic, functional and abstract pieces such as cups, bowls, sculptures and figures. They will learn the basics (pinching, coiling, and slab construction) that form the foundation of all hand-built pottery. The class incorporates art history by studying famous artists for inspiration. Students glaze each masterpiece, giving it their own unique flair. Projects are returned the following week after being fired in our studio kiln, and enjoyed by students, their families, and loved ones for a lifetime! Comic Book Design with Geek Forest Grades: 3 to 7

Comic Book Design is back! Mark will introduce students to a wide variety of comics to explore. Students will then create a set of characters for their story and some setting ideas. As they begin their creation they will learn about borders, close-ups, word and thought bubbles and sound effects. Students will learn to develop the story arc in comics. Leading from the introduction, the incident, the conflict and rising action, the climax and the resolution. With this storytelling process and character development they will have a finished comic story to take home.

Cooking with Allergic to Salad Grades: PK to 1

One of our most popular after school classes is back! Fun, hands-on, from-scratch healthy cooking class. Our classes create a platform for a lifetime of adventurous eating and purposeful life skills. Classes focus on kitchen safety, knife skills and vegetable, fruit and equipment identification.

Mandarin Grades: PK - 1

Chinese dance, calligraphy, painting, music, and science are all organically integrated into mandarin learning, which give our students multisensory experiences with Mandarin. Keep a balance between academics and fun. Provide differentiation for different levels. Our curriculum is a grid design, horizontally following seasonal events, vertically following universal themes, like life cycles. The content includes speaking and listening skills, character recognition, sentence structure and so on.

MinecraftEdu: Redstone Machinations Grades: 2 to 5

Minecraft is an expansive game that lets players design and create unique worlds with amazing structures. One of the more complicated aspects of Minecraft is Redstone, which is Minecraft version of electrical circuitry. This class will introduce students to the many uses of Redstone through a series of adventure in creation, exploration, and castle besieging, with students making mine cart tracks to help them gather resources, working together to build their towns, and designing traps to defend their village, all with the use of Redstone. Mini Musical: Mary Poppins with Child’s Play NY Grades: PK to K

In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun, and - SNAP - the job’s a game! Pack your valise and umbrella and join us as we soar with Mary Poppins and the Banks children. We’ll step into our chalk paintings to go on a magical adventure, make our very own kite to fly, step in time with the chimney sweeps, and have a supercalifragilistic time learning songs and dances from the beloved classic and the new film. Get Ready For High School With Angela HinerGrades: 6 to 7

The purpose of this class is to give students the skills they need to approach high school entrance exams with confidence. We will cover essential test-taking skills and the content of specific exams, in a safe and comfortable environment. Practice questions, games and discussion will help prepare students for test-taking. Instruction will be guided by trends observed across previous practice standardized tests. By the end of the course, students will be able to show the comparison between their starting and ending results. Students will be provided with study guides for the ISEE/SSAT.

Hogwarts AcademyGrades: 1 to 4

Perfect your magic skills in this interactive, creative, spell-binding class! Find out which house you belong to and learn how to make potions, use your wand, identify creatures, and more! Jedi Training AcademyGrades: 1 to 4

The Force will be with you as you learn the ways of the Jedi! Play Star Wars games, build Star Wars vehicles and go from Padawan to Jedi Knight in one session! You will play characters, learn to draw the Clone Wars cartoon characters, create your own Jedi uniform, and even take home your very own Light Saber! Karma Kids Yoga Grades: PK to 1

Everything Yoga! This is a great way to experience all the benefits of yoga in a fun-filled age appropriate way! Each week we will have a different theme, such as Partner Poses, Group Poses, Yoga Games, Yoga Mindfulness, Musical Yoga, Superhero Yoga, Doll Yoga, Upside Down Yoga, Bug Yoga, Animal Yoga, Character Yoga and more! Join CinemaKidz and learn how to act in, and produce an original tv show series! Kids will learn to utilize lights, gels, green screens, tripods, and even learn to add special effects and motion graphics to their projects! Mixed Martial ArtsGrades: PK to 1

Acosta Mixed Martial Arts specializes in teaching a holistic mixed martial arts curriculum to children. The instructors combine and integrate elements from an array of martial arts - striking techniques from karate, tae kwon do, and muay thai, ground techniques from jiu jitsu and brazilian jiu jitsu, self-defense skills from krav maga and judo, and movement adapted from capoeira and jeet kune do. Process Art with Lesley Murtha Grades: PK to 3

Process art is an open ended experience where children are invited to use the materials in the studio to create their ideas at their own pace. Process Art is about tinkering, making important decisions, troubleshooting, and making connections. Process Art allows children to be responsible for their own choices, materials and ideas. It honors the process of the individual in a safe and inspiring creative environment. Prompts are set up to stimulate creativity and Lesley will be present to support ideas and facilitate with projects. Lesley participates by helping children achieve their ideas, without doing the work for them.

Process Art values the process over product but there’s going to be a whole lot of making going on!

Poker ClubGrades: 3 to 7

The beloved instructor Mark Golden will continue focusing on providing developmentally appropriate classes, with group and differentiated/individualized instruction that spans all educational domains—cognitive, interpersonal, affective and psychomotor. Students will study rules; math (counting, odds, probability and statistics); analytical skills; strategy; micro and “macro” economic models; money

design to support them. We connect Architecture and Civil engineering to urban design while integrating math, geometry, design, climate and history. Sewing and TextilesGrades: 2 to 5 In this unique after school class, students will have the opportunity to explore sewing, textiles, and surface design using various techniques to bring their ideas to life. This involves the creative exploration of fiber arts, from shibori dyeing, hand-painting, and printing fabric, to felting, weaving, and knitting. We will sew by hand as well as use sewing machines to create both wearable garments and textile-inspired artwork from our own handmade fabrics, stitching and embellishing each piece to create something truly one-of-a-kind. As students hone these lifelong skills, they’ll be encouraged to notice the impact of sewing, textiles, and surface design in their everyday lives. Come get wrapped up in sewing at WNS!

Shakespearience with Dan RubinsGrades: 3 to 5

Shakespearience! introduces students to the plays and characters of William Shakespeare. Who was Shakespeare? What was it like to be an actor at the Globe in England four hundred years ago? What’s with all those thees and thous? And just who is Hamlet? Shakespearience! will answer all those questions and more as students prepare a performance of a mini-Shakespeare play!

SpanishGrades: PK to 1 Students will engage in various multimedia approaches that will further develop their Spanish language skills. Students will have the opportunity to incorporate Spanish language input in artistic ways. Through stories, music and movement, and art your child will journey and aspire a whole class art project, at the end of the semester.

Northside Athletics Schedule

If your child intends to participate on an Athletic team, please avoid registering for After School or Extended Care programming on the days that the teams are scheduled to meet. Athletics schedule is subject to change.

Basketball (January 8th to March 12th)

Practices will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:50 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Games will be held on Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Track and Field (March 31st to May 19th)

Practices will be held Mondays and Tuesday from from 2:50 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Meet times and locations are to be determined.
