Beef it’s what’s for Dinner...

The Loup County students have enjoyed many delicious and nutri-

tious meals this school year through the Meal Booster Program.

Last spring one beef was donated and the processing was paid for

through monetary donations. The donated beef was used 3 to 4

times a month and we have 2 meals left at this time. Many commu-

nities and schools across Nebraska have seen the benefits of im-

plementing locally grown beef and pork into the school lunch pro-

gram. If anyone is interested in becoming a Loup County Meal

Booster by donating a beef or pork or by donating to the cost of

processing, please call the school at 942-6115. All meat used in

the school lunch program must be processed by a USDA certified

facility. Our goal is to have enough locally raised beef or pork to

serve in at least one meal per week for the entire school year.

Please consider becoming a Loup County Meal Booster and thanks

for supporting Loup County Public School.

When? People come to the Clothing Closet on the last Friday of every month between the hours of 3:00

and 5:30 to select clothing and shoes. All sizes from newborn to adult XXL are available.

FACTS:

The Clothing Closet gave away clothing and shoes to 555 people in 2016.

Over 80 volunteers helped sort the clothing to make it available to the public.

This project is provided by volunteer help from the community and several churches.

ple’s City Mission for the homeless. Clothing not used there gets baled and sent to warm and cool

countries. Unusable clothing is recycled into rags and stuffing for chairs and car seats.

This is a mission/recycling project that begins in Burwell and branches out to Lincoln and other parts of the

world.

State Degree, Proficiency, and Star Award Results

On Wednesday, February 15th Agriculture Instructors and High School Senior State Degree Candidates from District 8 FFA chapters gathered at Ord High School. These senior students were interviewing for the chance to receive their FFA State Degree. Earlier in Febru-ary was the District 8 Proficiency Application Review. High School Students can apply for spe-cific awards for their Supervised Agricultural Experiences. Both awards require keeping great financial records over their projects and fill out an application explaining their SAE.

In order for a student to receive their state degree they must have made or produc-tively invested $3,000 from their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE). They also had to attend around 50 FFA events and do 25 hours of volunteer community service during their high school career. Then they must go through an interview explaining their involvement in their SAE and the FFA.

Students interviewing for the State Degree from Loup County High School included Whitney Steckel, Ethan Allen, Paul Sandoz, and Hailey Glidden. Whitney’s SAE project was her commercial and registered Hereford Breed- ing Cattle. Ethan’s SAE included work-ing for his Grandparents, Uncle, and cousin on their Farm and Ranch as well as working for his dad. Paul’s SAE included building fence, shingling houses, and other ranch and carpentry work. Hailey’s SAE included lifeguarding at the Sargent Pool and working with her goats that she shows at county fair. Congratulations to all four students who will receive their State Degree at the State FFA Convention in Lincoln this upcoming April.

Loup County High School also had a student (Whitney Steckel) apply for a proficiency award. In the proficiency area of Beef Entrepreneurship, Whitney Steckel received a Gold. Whitney owns a cow herd that includes show heifers, cows, and bulls that she raises to sell. She dedicates many hours to her cattle project to ensure that her business continues to suc-ceed. She also applied for the State Star Farmer award and she has made it past the district level. Whitney will have her applications judged at the State level in March with the possibility of being one of three finalists in those respective areas to make it to Nebraska State FFA Conven-tion for a final round of judging. Congratulations to Whitney for all her hard work in her projects and good luck in the next round of judging. Next Up…

FFA Students are now enjoying National FFA Week (Februray 18th-25th) as well as preparing for District Livestock Judging on March 7th in Ord. Then the attention will turn to State Convention coming up in early April.
