William Shakespeare was believed to have been born in theShakespeare family home in Henley Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, England in the year 1564, although his actual date ofbirth cannot be substantiated as at this time in Englandbirths were not formally registered and Birth Certificateswere not produced, his birth date can be guessed as due tothe high mortality rate of infants, it was the custom ofElizabethan parents to have their children baptised three

days after their birth and there is a record of William'sbaptism in the register of the Holy Trinity Parish Church inStratford dated 26th April 1564.

    The Globe Theatre.

The Globe Theatre opened in 1599 with a production of "As You Like It", In 1613. Throughoutthe play; Henry VIII, a canon went off, marking the entrance of the king, unfortunately a strayspark set the thatch roof aflame and within one hour, the whole theatre was destroyed.

Reconstruction of the Globe began immediately; this was completed in June 1614.Performances continued until 1642, when the Puritans, who found theatre vulgar andintolerable, shut all theatres down. Two years later the Globe was leveled to make way for

    Living Conditions.

In the 1500s it was about 150-200 per 1000live births and about 50% of children were

dead by the age of 15. Cities tended to bethe least healthy, with highly insanitaryconditions and people living in cramped, confined spaces. In London, the death rateexceeded the birth rate, so there had to beconstant in-migration. On average, it wasexpected for you to live up to any agebetween 30 and 40 years.

People died from various diseases/infections,such as: smallpox, plague, dysentery, diphtheria, TB, scarlet fever, whooping

cough, influenza, and pneumonia and seenas no cures or vaccinations had been found,no-one was immune. New diseases alsoensured that populations devastated by theBlack Death of the fourteenth century onlyslowly recovered.

    Classes/Classification.

In the 1500s in Britain, there was 5 differentclasses, in order of money, these being:

made candles, took care of children, doingwhat they could to survive.

Nobel women weren't treated much better.Their marriages were arranged to make surethat their family could gain more power orwealth.

The idea of knights being out to save the damsel in distress is inaccurate, knights were enforcers

for the king/lord that they worked for. It got so bad that the church came in and made them take

an oath that they would not harm women and children.

King Edward I and his nobles had a practice in Scotland, taking the bride from her wedding for thefirst night of marriage. If a woman was too much trouble she was sent to a nunnery or put in exile

There was a punishment called the scolds bridle that was made of metal and fit into the mouthand then buckled in the back. Women were forced to wear this and they were also dunked inwater in a special chair. Women were also raped and forced in slavery in times of war. Life for

    women was not good.
