IXPs

Benefits of IXPs

Reduce Transit Costs

Better control of routing

Traffic stays local

Does not become subject to foreign policy

Improve end-user experienceLower Latency

Less jitter for real-time traffic (voice and video)

Canadian IXP Landscape Past

Historically Canada had only 2 public peering points (IXPs):

Toronto Internet Exchange

Canadas largest IXP

Founded in the late 90s

194 peers on over 300 peering ports

Ottawa Internet ExchangeFounded in 2000

Relatively small

13 peers

Need for #Change

Only 2 IXPs in Canada was NOT Acceptable

We were behind other countries in the world like:

Cambodia (3)

Phillipines (5)

Poland (12)

Singapore (3)

And many other larger (and smaller) countries

We were on par (or worse) at 2 IXPs with the tech heavy nations of:Tanzania, Latvia, Tunisia, Peru

And many others

At the 2011 Canadian ISP Summit CIRA threw down the gauntletCIRA announces a program to help fund the start-up of new IXPs across Canada

The goal of the program is to keep Canadas traffic in the country, reduce latency, and increase end-user experiences

Canadian Landscape Today

We still have the first 2 IXPs

Toronto Internet Exchange (TorIX)

Still the largest, approaching 200 Gbps at peak

Ottawa Internet Exchange (OttIX)

New IXPs have come to life:Vancouver Internet Exchange (VanIX)

Manitoba Internet Exchange (MBIX)

Calgary Internet Exchange (YYCIX)

Quebec Internet Exchange (QIX)

Halifax Internet Exchange (HFIX)

Does is really matter?
